Tranny cooler mesh screen

I've searched, and didn't find the answer.

Any way to dig this bad boy out of a '92 radiator? I'd hate to spend $346 plus shipping just to get rid of a little brass mesh.

Yeah, I know about adding a tranny cooler, I'm just wondering if removing the screen is possible.

Not likely

Dick,

Long time ago, maybe on Yahoo, I remember Randy having a picture of a junk rad with the mesh visible. He had to cut it open to see it if memory serves.

This thing was not designed as a grid to filter the oil. It is there to create turbulence in the oil, so that it cools better in the rad. I say this because it is not merely an easy to get at grid at the inlet opening, it goes well into the rad to get the oil churning.

Even if you could ream it out, you would have to ensure no brass or bronze particles made their way into the passages of the tranny. Difficult to be sure of this.

Your best bet has to be, buy a rad from a salvage yard from a '95/'96 car. Reaming the grid has to create more problems than it is likely to cure.

Joe:)

PS: You could take off the rad, and reverse flush the ATF cooler with good strong solvent, making sure before refitment it was totally free of crud and particles. Then, with a filter in the line between the tranny and the OE cooler, the grid could never clog, and continue to do the turbulent cooling it was designed for. This would be fairly cheap, and done right, you should have no future problems. Has to be achievable for less than your 300 bucks.;)

Drat!! :(

I figured it might be something like that, but I thought I'd ask. I'd thought about the reverse-flush, and will probably try that instead.

Thanks for the help, Joe.

Yes Dick, Joe's p.s. is the way to go.

The mesh won't give trouble, if it is reverse flushed out and the filter is fitted to prevent it blocking up. Use the Subaru transmission filter and change it reguarly.

Harvey. ;)

I love living dangerously. "Evil Twin" the radical of my two pearlies, is a 92 and it doesn't have a filter, or an external cooler. Am I a crazy person, or what?

Of course the radiator was replaced with a brand new one, about a year ago. :D

Experience has nothing to do with it. It's all age!
