Engine diagnostic?

So I know on newer SVX's than mine there is a place to hook up a computer. My check engine light is continuesly on and cant figure out why, Is there a place on my 92 svx to hook up a computer? I looked all under the steering colum but cant see nuthin. Thanks in advanced

Click on the link above that reads "How-to Documents", then click "electrical", then click "diagnostic codes/blinking lights" for the easy way to read your stored codes. The 92-95s have a self test so you dont need a computer to read them.

Re: Engine diagnostic?

Ok, So I figured it out and got my 2 codes... 1st one was 32 Oxygen Sensor or Circuit and the 2nd was 38 Engine Torque Control. So I assume on the o2 sensor I can just replace it but I dont know anything about 38 Engine Torque Control and how to fix the problem, or even what the problem is. Can anyone give me a idea on where to start?

Re: Engine diagnostic?

The code 38 means the transmission control unit is not communicating correctly with your engine computer. The only thing I know of that you can do is check the wiring and grounds at the TCU and ECU. A detailed flow chart and wiring diagram for the SVX is available in the SVX service manual..... just click the link below in my signature and you can read it online or download the whole thing.

Re: Engine diagnostic?

So Im wondering if this could be the reason why I am losing power: headlights, window motor power, dashlights dim ect... I took my car in today to rebuild the alternator and all they did was put a new belt on it. The old belt still looks good to me, but yet all my problems are still there. Like I said I got the code number 38 (Engine Torque Control) and I know I have a bad ground, bad +, or some loose wire, because I get 14 volts off my alt. So anyone have any ideas?

Re: Engine diagnostic?

I'm a newbe at the svx code thing, I would start by clearing the codes as per instructions and see if they both come back. then proceed from there, I have had a few codes show up and after clearing some came back (knock sensor) (maf)some did not, after replacing the ks and cleaning the maf no codes. This doesn't help your situation but gives some info to work with, I know little about the TCU ECU realationship.................G

Re: Engine diagnostic?

I dont think that clearing the codes will do anygood considering I know I have a ground/+ problem because of all my lights dim soo much (as if the alt. was bad)

Re: Engine diagnostic? Torque control signal

This drawing shows the torque control connection.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photopost/...21/trans3b.jpg

Second from top, it is terminal 16 on Connector B68, and it should be reading 4.5 to 5 Volts with the ignition on.

You can see other transmission diagrams in my Photo Post locker in the Technical Album. This one above applies to US cars of '92 vintage.

Re: Engine diagnostic?

check the large wires coming off the top lug of the alt, mine grounded shortly after buying the car and melted the lug some what and turned on the idiot light on the dash, after fixing this issue good to go, hope this helps............G

Trevor if he chirps in is pretty good at these problems.

If the alternator guys have given your alternator a clean bill of health, then perhaps you have a stripped wire or some kind of earthing problem.

It would be useful if you could get a wiring diagram from Chris's link.

If you take it you may have a short somewhere a good way to start is turn on your ignition, or start the car, whatever you need to do to have the problem apparent.

Then, systematically pull the fuses from your fuse boards. If nothing changes, replace the fuse, then pull another one. Should you pull a fuse and the problem goes away, that tells you the short is in that particular circuit. With the aid of the wiring diagram you could then trace those particular wires till you find the short. And fix it.

Hope that helps.

Joe

Re: Engine diagnostic?

It does look chewd up a bit but dosent look corodid or loose, just looks like some1 tried to tighten it with their teeth. I also put my multi meter up to all power and ground wires from alt to the starter and had 14 volts everyware.

Re: Engine diagnostic?

thx svxist ill give that a try, I just want to make sure I understand it right... idle the car and start pulling fuses one by one and seeing what happens right?

That was kinda weird... I turned on all lights and my heater and started playing...Pulled the heater fuses out and the heater stayed on. Pulled the cigar fuse heater went off and I pulled the mirors fuse and the car lowerd the ide alot. Not sure what to make of that but ok lol
