Sunroof Issues...maybe misunderstandings....

Is it just my sunroof or all SVX sunroof's that stop on the close mid way. It appears this is a factory thing, but my sunroof when being closed, stops about 4 inches from the fully close position. Pressing the button again will allow it to close all the way. Now is this an issue with MY sunroof (possibly needs adjusting), or with all sunroof's? Mine sticks when it's opened so it wouldn't suprise me if it's just mine.

The reason why I'm asking is I'm looking into alarms with full window/sunroof closing. This will allow me to arm the car and have it automatically close all my windows and my sunroof. However if the roof stops midway, the alarm will assume its closed and stop...leaving my car at risk with the next rain. :(

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

Yup, it's just yours.....kidding. Mine does the same thing. Although it's been getting harder and harder to get it open intially without giving it a little push. But the midway stop is normal.

Hey Guys,

Mine is the same way. I did read a somewhere that the dealership used a lubricate so that the sunroof would not stick anymore. I have the records since the day she was born and I will check to see if they state what lube they used. I doubt it but its worth a shot.

It was so customer satisfaction would be high. Seems like a known issue though that subarua wont take care of.

LarryIII or Aredub got any ideas about the correct lube to use?

Here's a strange one - when opening the sunroof on my 1/92 svx if I hold down the button it will open and go all the way back. On my wifes 6/91 svx it will open so that the rear edge is all the way up and then stop. Another push of the button sends it all the way back. Both close the same way by stopping about halfway closed.

Kinda like the transmission problem, huh? :D

But I know my SVX does the same thing. As a matter of fact, I was driving it home the day I bought it (in the snow) and I thought there was a problem at first.

Also, mine sticks while opening too.

Mine when it sticks on the way open...requires a push up on the back to make it "pop" open. Don't worry, I'll figure out how to fix it, and I will post it on here. :D

Ryan to the rescue! :D

I bought my '96 LSi brand new. It does the stop half way thing. The manual says it's supposed to. Does it on open and close. You have to hit the button twice. Again, it's supposed to do that.

Mine (11/91) also opens to the tilt position and then stops. It takes another push of the button to make it slide. The halfway stop on closing is a safety feature. It kinda lets people who have their hands out the sunroof know that it's closing -- then stops before biting their fingers. If their head is out -- it's too late anyway. :D

There is a TSB about this. It says to apply silicone to the seal around the sunroof (the "slicky" part, not the "fuzzy" part). There's also the clutch nut adjustment you can try. You'll find that in the Yahoo FAQ

nvrmore100 07-20-2001 08:48 AM

Yeah I read up on it. Unfortunately it didn't the spray didn't help. I used silicone lube on pretty much every part. However it still sticks in the fully closed position, unless you give the back side a little press upward. I haven't tried the nut adjustment yet though. I get it going this weekened when I'm in Canada. My friends got me working on his Merkur XR4TI, so I'll suck him in to doing some SVX work as well. :D

Just between you and me . . . I have to give mine a little boost to open it too. That is, unless I'm up to highway speed (well, around 60mph). I used a product called "Sil-Glide," a silicone product in a toothpaste-type tube, that helped for a while. I was going to re-apply it, but, alas, I can't find it any more (Got my first tube at Autozone, but, they quit carrying it). I've also tried the clutch nut adjustment, but, I can't remember whether I had the sunoof OPEN when I did it. I may try it again. Way to go, on having your friend reciprocate for your efforts. Have a good trip.

He better, you know how damn strangly put together a XR4 is?? Sheesh I must admit I love the cars, but damn! He's got a leaking rear brake piston (can't think of the real name), and a broken radiator mount. To top all that off, he just called me and asked if we could pull a tranny for this Mustang he bought last week for $30! Some vacation! :D

Sticky sunroof salvation

Hey all. My sunroof also required me to give it a hand when first opening it. I bought a Valvoline product called Pyroil Multi-Purpose Silicone Lubricant and used the included little red straw to guide my very gentle (barely pushing down the button) trickle around the entire contact area of the bead that rings the panel. No assist required anymore.
