Manual Transmission Gear Ratio

The STI 6 speed has a top gear ratio of .76, while the SVX auto top ratio is .64. Is there a manual which has a top ratio closer to the .64 or any after market gear kits which would have it? When doing highway miles I want to keep the RPM down when cruising.

Keep also in mind that any manual tranny will have a lower final gear ratio too...so even if you find a tranny with a .64 high gear, it will still be turning more RPMs than the Auto in the SVX.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...m+forester+6mt

The JDM Forester STi trans has a 0.707 top gear. Short of getting a custom gear cut, that's about as good as you're going to get.

Perhaps you shouldn't get a 6mt??? Me thinks a 4.44 is more suitable from what you have indicated thus far.

the best 6mt for a cruising ratio is the JDM forester... since they are not easily found I believe the USDM 6mt has a .72 as listed which is very nice... I get 21mpg in my silver with the .86(i think) JDM sti trans I have and thats with a little dipping on the throttle here and then too... So a stock SVX should get closer to 25-28mpg. With the USDM trans it should be right around 30mpg w/ a good running car.

That would be an Auto no? This will be my 4th Tranny. No Auto's. Plus I do like to play the gears on the twisties.

Ah okay, yeah manual tranny is just so fun... I just love driving my car... if you do go for 6mt I would recommend to be very careful around E-bay... when I was doing my initial searches I found that about half of the offers on e-bay were scams. Also do remember you are looking at roughly $5,500+ for the entire swap.

Good luck

I build an auto for $2700 that should last you forever and make your car faster thanks to faster shifts and less drivetrain loss.

Appreciate the offer, but I do really like manual's. The only auto I'd consider would be one with paddle shifts:p (Or a cheap repair to mine assuming I'm not told to get some peanut butter 'cause it's toast.)

SVX_MY_BABY 06-01-2007 03:50 AM

I guess there is really only a couple hundred rpm difference between .76 and .64.

How is the JDM 6 mt different from stock? I see one listed on ebay.

longassname 06-01-2007 08:02 AM

I was just letting you know that there is an auto that won't break on you option out there. Your forth one comment made it sound like replacing them had left a bad taste in your mouth and was the reason you'd get a manual despite wanting low rpm highway cruising.

Since you actually want a manual because you want a manual........
Get an 07 6 speed. They have the same dif gear ratios as us.

bugman1964 06-01-2007 10:42 AM

or just see if some one like ppg has a 5th or 6th gear that would work for you.
Thats what I want to do in my rs is get a 5th gear that will work with my 4.11 rear end to drop my cruise rpm at 70 down closer to 3krpm.

Sov13t 06-01-2007 10:45 AM

I am right around 3k rpm @ 70-73 mph in 6th.

At 3.2k I will be around 80+ mph and so on.

Try looking at the 07 STi or 07? 08? Legacy Spec-B gearboxes as they got new ratio patterns compared to the older ones.

Also might try to find the 3.0 spec-B 6spd stats as sold in europe as this might also have new and interesting ratios.

longassname 06-01-2007 03:35 PM

umm, do the math with the 3.545 dif gears and I think you'll find the 07 sti is by far the best 6 spd for an svx
