As long as you use premium gas or above then your fine.

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

I know the old owner of my JDM svx used 91 in it and it pinked so badly. my nz new was recomned to use 96 or higher. i just use 98 i get no pinking at all. may as well use the slighty more expensive stuff. then your wont get any pre combustion and do no damage.

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

Your octane rating must be done differently than Canada. Here a lot of stations only go up to 91, 93 is quite available and only a few have 94. Any thing higher is only available for racing or aviation fuel. My SVX runs great on 91.

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

I have ALWAYS used 86 octane in ALL of mine and they do fantastic with it. I have probably put more miles on SVXi than 98 percent of the people here, so have a very good basis for evaluating the lower octane usage.

As always though---run it in YOUR car and evaluate it. If you get pings or any other strange noises or motor trys to run after you shut it off---go back to the higher juice.

As all know--this has been covered MANY MANY times.

Yes I am sure they use different calculations for their Octane than we do here

85 octane FTW!

I have used 89 in one of mine to see how it would handle it. It does fine and I can't tell the difference. Storminorman is an original owner and he has run 89 in his from the start. No problems at all and it has over 200K on it. :)

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

I have run 91, 95, 98 & 101 (av-gas) on various cars over the years & on my 95 SVX i get the following -

91 - 25mpg
95 - 28mpg
98 - 33mpg
101 - never tried it in SVX - normally find that you need to "manually add to tank" - found near raceways in 44 gallon drums...

By the way we are in UK gallons (which I think is more than US Gallons?).

Basically the better the fuel (then the more it costs) - but you get more out of it.

I also tend to run on long trips 98 + a couple of fuel additive extras (something like STP or some such named octane booster).

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

Hi octane freaks, I would look in the owners manual for NZ cars. Because octane ratings are different depending on how the number was determined. In the US we use R/M. This is "research method" and "motors method" added togeather and divided by 2. In most of the US you will find 87,89, and 91/92/93/94. At higher altitudes you will start at 85 instead of 87 at the low end. In other parts of the world a single method is used which tends to give a higher octane number. I beleave the SVX as well as other cars with a knock sensor will adjust the timing so that the lower octane fuel can be used in a pinch. According to Subaru you should switch back to 91 octane gas as soon as you can as the SVX will perform better over the long hall. I beleave Las Vegas is at some altitude and the SVX would perform better with lower than 91 octane gas than a SVX at or near sea level. Remember, you pays your money and you gets your thrills. Take care, BOBB

good lord, thanks steve, good to have someone tested for us....ur numbers reconfirm numbers the mazda car club done on their mazda3,which factory recommended 95 only, due to their chipbox setting, when 91 was used,u get very low milege than 95....so better use the highest one we could get....work out the same, but u dont risk other engine problems...thanks

True. Where I live NOW near Las Vegas is 7500 feet, but.........I bought my first SVX in Atlanta, GA and put 150,000 miles on it while living in that area. My granddaughter now owns it and it has over 200,000 miles on it and has ONLY burned low octane fuel its entire life. Still runs like a champ. My dau, son and nephews run only low octane, as well, and no one is having any problems and get great gas mileage for the engine HP and weight of car. Of course, much better on the road than around town. We are talking about 9 running cars in the family, 6 of which are daily drivers. :p

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

Not all SVXes are tuned the same.

Fuel that works great in a USDM car might not work so great in a JDM car.

The JDM cars are tuned for higher octane fuel than the USDM model. My JDM runs noticably better on "super" 98 RON than "regular" 95 RON. The European model is similar but not identical to the USDM model. It runs richer with more advance at high rpm and load. I don't have any information on the tuning of the Aus/NZ model but I *guess* it is probably similar to European.

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

This may help in regards to NZ octane ratings....................

"The Regulations provide for two grades of petrol which are differentiated by their minimum octane, regular (91 RON/82 MON) and premium (95 RON/85 MON)."

(from http://www.med.govt.nz/templates/Mul...____10382.aspx )

..........so based on this and using the US R/M system our octane ratings are regular 86.5 and premium 90.

Another thing to bear in mind is that most SVX in NZ are JDM and therefore tuned to where the fuel availiable is either 94 or 100 octane (which I assume is RON).

Re: 91 or 95 or 98 octane

Mine allways ran terrible on less than 91, but your results may vary.

Also don't use leaded gas (avgas) in the SVX. It ruins O2 sensors and kills the cats. It can kill cats amazingly quick since just a tiny bit of lead can strip all the platinum right off the matrix.
