Time for an alternator rebuild
 

On the way to the supermarket this evening, the stereo started cutting out.:confused: Then I noticed the lights were getting dim. The alternator warning light on the dash isn't on, but I'm definitely lacking voltage.:(

I drove all the way home in darkness with the lights off, just praying that the battery would last until I got home. Fortunately we had a clear sky and a full moon tonight, but I still couldn't really see much. I did manage to get home but I don't think the car could have gone much further.

Hi Phil, Fast forward a few years when we all have some kind of electric car. As your driving home you notice the miles left to drive on the battery charge you have goes from 50 K to 10 K. Calls for a lite foot. Glad you made it home. Take care, BOBB

I'm pretty sure you would have checked this already but my alternator wires had seemingly been fried, at the actual alternator end. I replaced them with a heavier gauge and job sorted. I had a 'parasitic current draw' problem though that time, a charging loss problem came with a pinhole squirting coolant on the drive belt.
Finally, I bought a Yuasa battery last year. In the bike world these have an excellent reputation, but I'm not convinced the car batteries are the same as it isn't keen on being stood and holding it's charge. Over winter I do give it a 1 amp trickle regularly too.
Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind a 1 amp trickle myself now and then...
