I am waiting on my bodywork man to come back off hols to fix my damaged passenger door, the lock was damaged by would be thieves. In the meantime I have reset the factory codes on my door lock driver's side, so I can gain entry if the driver's side is damaged.

Each time I lift the latch when the car is locked, I hear a beep. By programming it to beep after particular numbers[times lifting the latch quickly], I can have the car open itself once I feed the latch the correct code.

This will also be handy if I lock in the key some day.

Don't all rush to set yours up, as far as I know, this system is only installed on Japanese home market models. My thanks to paddlesnz for the code input information.

Sorry to disappoint. Avantis are favourite cars of mine, way ahead in design for their time.

As you might guess, I was alluding to the Italian for "Come in" or "Enter". I can't speak Italian, but I remember this from a strangely amoral and charming movie of the same name years back, with the recently deceased Jack Lemmon and the leading lady was Juliet Mills. May he rest in peace.

Interesting arrangement on your door lock there. My Italian language skills extend to old Dean Martin records, although we certainly loved our trip to the country back in '76.
Yes Jack was one of a kind. Two of my favorites were The Out-of-Towners and the China Syndrome. Everything he did with Walter Matheau was a hoot also. :) Don

I saw a (I think) 55 President followed shortly by an early 60's Hawk on my way to work this morning. :D

And you sir live a charmed life!:D I saw a Hawk for sale last week in mint condition. I didn't stop to find out the price because the spouse gave me one of those "Just-shut-up-and-drive" looks.:D I always liked the Hawks more than the Avantis and even more so now that there are so many replica Avantis around. A shame indeed:(

When I was living in Settle, KY, I had a 23 mile drive to work through roads that were . . . well, let's just say that they seemed like a bunch of guys got together over several shots and chasers and said, "let's build a road." I passed this little trailer every morning on my way to Glasgow, KY -- sitting outside the trailer were three (count 'em) three Hawks, two looking to be in pristine condition, the third (probably a parts car) looking a little rough. It was a fine sight to see.

If only to have a sack of money at a moment like that. Sigh, such is life's little cruelties.:( But the upside is if you would have bedded down with a harem of Hawks you never would have fallen for the SVX:D The old "being in love with one when the right one comes along" situation. Reminds me of a "situation" from the high school days:D Hmmm, come to think of it I still don't recall how I got through that one alive:D

Aredub - Didn't the '55 President come in one color scheme? Chartreuse over Yellow. OHMUHGOD!! THE most georgeous Studebaker - The original Lowey '53 Coupe. Personal opinion. Ron.

Yes it did. And the one I saw was in its original skin. I overlooked the color in reverence to the car's fine heritage. The Black Hawk behind it brought me back to "real" color. :D

Did Raymond Loewy do a Studebaker coupe in '53? I must check it out. The one I like is the '62/'63 Avanti with the fibreglass bodywork. I suppose it would get more exposure over here, having obvious European lines. Also I must say, it is the only car with a "hidden" radiator that I tolerate. To me, big radiator = big heat = big power. Simple formula. If it ain't hungry for air, it's a pipsqueek, and I don't want one.

Also Ron, as a man with an eye for bodywork, check out the rear profile on the Avanti. 10 years later, NSU did homage to the shape with the boot of the Wankel engined RO 80, another car way ahead of it's time.

Yes Joe, the '53 Starliner was the original "radical" for its time car that provided the basis for the Hawks. By now you should have searched around & found some on-line photos. I was never a great fan of the Avanti. I found the big "eyeballs" a bit overwhelming, but I suppose they are part of the charm, like the SVX windows, that simply define the car. I find the rear end more appealing (I find A LOT of appealing rear ends), & yes, now that you mentioned it, the NSU Ro80 did seem to borrow that nice looking butt. I was stationed in Germany when the Ro80 was released, & lusted after one. Unfortunately, my G.I. salary stifled any thoughts of an actual "new" car. I was stuck with a '56 VW bug, small oval rear window, & a full folding fabric sun roof. Bought it for $300, & sold it for $300. Its value today? I don't want to think about it. Ron

Thanks Harvey, nice to know. Maybe you can help me a wee bit more.

My car came only with a key, no remote, and I can't replace the original for less than about £300, so I am not bothering, but putting a remotely activated deadbolt alarm on it instead. [some uab's tried to steal it!]

What I would like to know is this. Does the OE central locking also activate an OE engine immobilizer? I ask, because if the gits had gained entry to my car, I was wondering if it would be simple to defeat the steering lock, hot wire and drive away, or if the Japanese/Australian models are difficult/impossible to start without the key or defeating the central locking?

Do you know?

The Aust RHD model was also not fitted with an alarm, mine has an Aust.alarm system, fitted that works in with the central locking and the engine immobilizer, from a remote.
Steal it ? nothings impossible but I won't like to try.
