2000 Subaru Legacy GT Sedan
 

I am having a problem with my automatic transmission. When I try to shift the car into gear from park, it acts like it is still in neutral. In other words, when I push the gas with it in drive, all it does is race up the RPM's. If I sit there and keep trying, it will eventuallty go into gear. By the way, it has never done this when going into reverse. Any clue as to what the problem could be?

I realize that I am an outsider not owning an SVX and all (LOL), but any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had the exact same problem with my 2000 Impreza RS at around 45K miles, once it was in gear you could drive it all day.Took it back to the dealer as it was still under warranty,and the put a rebuilt tranny in it. The never really told me what was actually wrong with it.

I am at 67,000 miles. Unfortunately, I am not under warrenty because I am the second owner of this vehicle. Thanks for the response though. I really hope that I don't have to replace the tranny.

Maybe since it is not a warranty issue the problem may be able to be corrected without replacement.Good luck and let us know how you made out.

You should run the dignostic codes for the tranny. I am assuming you have the POWER light, or something similar.

The Legacy box is very similar to the SVX one.

The ATSG manual I have suggests the following for your symptoms:

Valve sticking
or
Faulty forward clutch relief ball
or
Faulty overrunning clutch relief ball
or
Forward clutch slippage.

According to their chart, the first three can be checked as an On-car Check.

The last one is a Unit Check, which I presume means tranny out.

I couldn't even hazard a guesstimate. Prices here in Ireland would be different, and the time element may climb, and be costly, if the tranny has to come out.

Best advice, you run the diagnostic, and see what information that comes up with.

Then, armed with that info, and what I gave you above, approach your friend and see if he knows roughly what that work might cost.

You should also put on a query here asking who is the best person or firm in your area to approach for getting your tranny fixed. If you can get an intro or a referral from the guys on here, it could save you $$$s, and better still, be assured the techies know the tranny, and will do a good fix.

Does it do it only in D or it does the same in 3 and 2 and 1? If it is only D it might be the shifter linkage..

How clean/dirty is the ATF? If you smell it - does it smell burnt. No it is not meant to smell nice even when it's new and clean, but does it smell burnt?

Drain the ATF, take the transmission pan out and see how much deposits you have on the bottom of the pan. Take the valve body out and clean it.

If transmission does not slip once it is engaged in a gear, it means your clutches are not burnt (yet) -
but if you don't fix it, the chances are they will be burnt soon and you'll be looking for a full rebuild or replacement.
