High fuel usage

My cars has suddenly started using a lot of fuel, a month ago it was brillant and now I get 200 k less per tank. Any ideas.

Pick it up in the air and see if your brakes are dragging.
Or binding in your driveshaft or carrier bearing.

Check O2 sensor(s), spark plugs, and coils. If your car is running rich or the gas isn't getting burned, it will use more.

Is the car running rich and hot?

I had all this problem with my Legacy recently. It was a bad connection on the temperature sensor. As a result the ECU was giving way too much fuel and the cooling fan never cut in.

Phil.

Most people say they can tell by smell. I would think you can smell it, but I'm not sure (I can't really smell that well).

That makes sense as I some times think I can smell a funny smell like oil on the exhaust but not the same. I was going to disconnect the O2 and see what happens to the fuel consumption. I have some new ones on the way as well.

Usually black soot on exhaust and/or plugs. Slightly higher than normal idle. Slight smell of petrol from exhaust.

Like an old car with the choke out.

mine runs between 800-1000 rpms on idle, usually higher if i just started it cold. My exhaust has some smalls holes in it, and im sure the o2 sensors are bad from it. The smell of petrol is really evident at times. Sounds like I have this problem too. My gas mileage has always be sh*tty.
