DVD Burners Reviewed

What are the current capabilities when it comes to DVD burners? Anyone recommend one over another? Can it copy most recent DVD's? Any brand/ model recommendations? ;)

There are DVD copiers that are out there now. Also DVD burners for your computer. My friend has one and burns DVD's in a few minutes.

well their are curently 3 types of dvd burners + burners - burners and dual layer burners. i recomend a dual layer because it can burn up to 8.5 gigs instead of 4.7. most new dvds are dual layer and take up 8+ gigs of space. i have a dual layer that i bought from newegg.com for 50 bucks. the brand doesn't matter (sony panisonic ect) only the speed and compatibility newegg.com is singulary the best online source for high quality inexpensive computer parts. i build my system intirely out of their parts and their tech support and customer service rivials best buy (no line). this is my system as it stands

1gig kingston low latency sddr ram
abit ag8 motherboard
intel 3 gigahertz h.t . tech overclocked to 4
ati x700pro pci ex
dual layer dvd burner
cdrw
dvd player
75gig Wd raptor HD
250 Wd raptor HD

with these componints it takes about 6-7 min to burn a dual layer dvd (8.5gigs) if you want fast burning it is important to have atleast 512 mb of ram if not more the fastest dvd burner in the world wont help if it cant backbuffer into the system memory.

this is a very good dual layer burner im thinking of upgrading to this one in a few weeks as i have an aluminium case

I believe all new DVD Burners are dual layer. At CAD$20 per blank DL Disc I'm sure not going to be burning any in the near future! (I currently pay 0.45 per blank DVD)

I'm currently on my 2nd DVD burner. (First one going in soon on warranty)

These are what I've tested:
LG 4X
I/O Magic 4X
LG 12X (DL)
LG 16X (DL)

Nero mainly but I also use DVD Shrink for ripping. I also have DVD Decrypter, Easy CD Creator, Alcohol 120%, B's, Prassi and whatever else I need to burn proprietary images.

BTW, On the dual layer burners, what kind of blank media (Cd's) is compatible?? Can you use single layer??

I used plextor 12x but I am going to go get the NEC and flash it for dual layer tomorrow i think.

yes you can. but some are not dual compatible (single layer dvds are + and - different burners use different ones but newer ones use both)

What are some of the prices you have seen for DL media?

Matthewmongan 12-13-2004 03:12 PM

i think its about 10$ a piece for dual layer the other 4gb i think are 2$. if your backing up files and such 4gigs are fine but to copy moivies you need 8gb the price will go down soon tough,

Earthworm 12-13-2004 04:43 PM

CAD$12.69 each from www.ncix.com for DL media.

I paid CAD$0.45 each for single layer DVD media.

JLittell 12-13-2004 05:21 PM
