How much would you pay?

There's a 92 model, no spoiler, 123k miles, on ebay that's in the town next to me. Claims all is well except the tranny is gone.

I don't NEED another car (4 vehicles 3 drivers now), but if the bidding stays low.....

so how much would you bid assuming it was as claimed (I've never seen the car, even on the road). I can e-mail bidder to find his location and drop by to verify. If anybody else is interested I could look it over for you too. Only caveat, I'll be out of town on biz trip until Saturday - 5 days left on auction.

Landshark 08-20-2002 07:12 PM

not more than a few hundred bucks. the cost of a new tranny is probably about what a '92 with 123k miles is worth.

I'd pay $999.00 for ANY SVX assuming it hadn't rolled end-over-end down a mountain. If I couldn't recover the price in two days from parts, I'm not doing my job.

Where are these idiots coming up with that 500HP crap? Automatic 3 Speed + overdrive? If I recall, it was a 4spd Auto. Perhaps I don't know anything about this SVX at all.

Hmm... (quote)
<Now for the bad news, it needs the transmission rebuilt. If you go through the Yahoo newsgroups (or any SVX newsgroup), you will see that on every early SVX the transmission was the only weak point. In fact, the engine is made strong enough to produce 500 HP without any strength modifications. However, because the car was much lower than any of Subaru's other cars, and because it had a larger engine than any of their other cars, and because it was AWD, the transmissions on every single 1992 SVX overheated and went out, usually around 90,000 miles.>

Geez, I always suspected the car was too low. :p

ensteele 08-21-2002 12:01 AM

It is also interesting that they all overheated and went out around 90,000 miles. I wonder what made that happen to ALL of them at that number of miles. Well, at least his is normal.

I_Alcyone_I 08-21-2002 12:21 AM

500 HP...... I guess a lot of that dissapears after it goes through the transmission, plus the car is so low that the gravitational pull of the earth pulls a lot of the HP (it is a well known fact that Horse Power is heavy, and 500 horses!?!, come on, a couple are bound to fall out somewhere along the drivetrain) right out of it as its going through the drive shaft to the rear differential (I think this is what he was getting at with the AWD thing). after all subaru had almost no experience with all wheel drive when they came out with the SVX, its all just a matter of common sense once you think about it.

Mr. Pockets 08-21-2002 06:57 AM

He doesn't claim that the engine DOES produce 500hp - he very specifically states that it is CAPABLE of producing 500hp.

And, hey, isn't anything? Cripes, if I ever sell the Justy on eBay, I'm going to say that it's capable of producing 600. Why not? :D

Landshark 08-21-2002 05:26 PM

has ANY SVX ever produced 500hp? maybe it was an SVX in that urban legend about the guy who strapped a JATO solid-fuel rocket to his car and flew into a hillside?

Ron Mummert 08-21-2002 08:05 PM

With "both timing belts" replaced, by gawd it MUST have 500 HP!
It's that VERY RARE HH-12 engine! Wow!

Hey Lee, if you do the bidding, I'll split anything with you up to $1,200.00 total. You store it on your plantation. I visit my daughter in Kissimmee, & drop in on you for a weekend dismantling party. You dismantle, I cheer you on. We now make millions selling parts!
Just a thought.

Ron.

Ron...

well, it's over $1200 already with two days to go.

While you cheering me on while I disassemble is a wonderful offer, my significant other feels I have enough motorcycle parts lying about - and they take up less room than car parts - stupid suburban neighborhood thing I guess. :D

As a whole car, I'm not even going to bother looking at it. Given the seller's description, it's pretty hard to imagine it was well taken care of & I already have an SVX that wasn't well taken care of - can't afford another.

editing-----------

The bidding dropped back below 1200 due to a retracted bid, but when it was at 1275 (current bidder must have 1250 as a top bid) the reserve still wasn't met.

If the car were within 100 miles of my driveway, I'd be very tempted to go $1,300 & pray that 2nd gear would make it home. Oh, well. Maybe next time. Thanks for tracking it, Lee.

So, NOW how much would you have paid?

It got bid to $1675 & didn't meet reserve...I e-mailed, then called this guy up to swing by for a look. It is an LS model and it would be of interest only as a parts car IMHO.

As a driver the following would have to be fixed (in addition to the tranny that he admits is fried):
Driver's door looks like a vary large, curved, wood-lathe chisel was punched through the door. Problem with D-side power window. Dings in most every panel, needs paint - clear coat gone in places, interior was so cluttered couldn't tell shape of carpet or back seat. There was a broken handle or two on the floor, not sure what they went to - one looked like the seat lumbar handle but I didn't look that close. Trunk looked a little tired. Tires not long for this world, wheels look like they had never been cleaned. Under the hood there was a big patch of rust near the battery down toward where the tranny filter would be, didn't look for more but there probably is. Lots of crud on the engine and lower tray - maybe goodly leaks.

For those of you who remember his claims on E-bay, should have been there with me to take a look. He was working on a sunroof for a Civic - claims the glass just popped out and shattered on the road as he was driving.

And did you know that SIA made 5-speed manual SVXs, but dropped it after the first year because they had electrical problems? There were other claims, but that was enough for me - FYI, reserve was at 2000, and he is hard over at $1700 claiming that's what he still owes on it.

I'd hate for him to set me up for a blind date with his sister!
OK, my hunnert pluse your hunnert, but that's it. He has to pay for the towing. I really feel sorry the car.

Ron.
