Locating Cylinders

OK... new check engine problem with my 96... <sigh>

Getting a misfire on Cylinder 1. OK... which one's Cylinder 1????

I'm pretty sure it's probably a coil pack, it seems consistent on a single cylinder and causes very occasional rough-running. I want to replace the coil on that cylinder but I'm not sure which one is #1???

Anyone?

standing infront of the car the cyls are this setup:
Code:

5 6
3 4
1 2

I'd recommend replacing the plug first if you're getting misfire, but then you really ought to replace them all if it's been a while. PLus you can check up on the condition of the engine.

if you don't have a spare plug, just switch it with another cylinder's plug and see if this cylinder causes the same problem.

you really shouldn't reuse old plugs. The crush washer wont create a seal once it's been crushed and removed. Just buy new plugs.

SilverSpear 11-24-2004 12:39 AM

this is just to know if the problem lies with the plugs or the wiring

THAWA 11-24-2004 12:41 AM

right, but you're still going to want to replace them afterwards so why not just do it from the start?

Just to verify I understand your diagram... Cylinder 1 is the cylinder on the front passenger side, correct?

THAWA 11-24-2004 08:42 AM

correct

correct....the easy one to get to;)

Thank %DEITY% for that! :)

On the flip side, I cleared the CE light last night and today it didn't recur. I doubt I can get THAT lucky... ;)

Any spark plug on the passenger is easy to get to once you've removed the airbox assembly.

When was the last time you've changed the plugs?

It'll come back. When I bought my SVX I needed to change my spark plugs b/c of a CE light. If I cleared the codes, the light would come back after 2-3 days...

Actually, I just changed the plugs in September... all 6 of them. I do find it odd that it took a while for an error to crop up.

Three days... still no light. Hmm... when I cleared the light I started pulling apart the air intake system to check for blockages in the throttle body... pulled it all out and removed the hoses. I also made sure to reconnect everything carefully and tightly. Not sure if that could cause the problems I've been seeing in the logs (misfiring cylinder 1, no activity O2 sensor, no activity crank position sensor despite replacing both of them)... I'll play a wait and see with the car.

Also another thing I've noted of late is that my car generally seems to run smoother and happier if I leave the climate control on Auto... often when I'm running in Econ mode I get some occasional roughness. Hmm... must check idle...

that's just reverting one plug with another, they are the front ones right? so the "easy ones"? just to check if this is the problem!!! why paying for new ones if they are not the cause? got it now??

THAWA 11-29-2004 10:06 AM

because they have a crush washer. It's a washer that once enough torque is applyed to it crushes and forms a seal. if you remove the plug, the washer comes out with the plug, breaking the seal. It can't be recrushed to form another seal. It's a one time use only. Do you "got it now??"
