Timing belt parts interchangability?
I found only one thread on this so I have a couple questions.....
For the camshaft pulley, is there another subaru engine with the same size?? Will a timing belt from a 4-cylinder DOHC work on the SVX?? Are any of the smooth idler pulleys the same on another subaru engine?? The reason I ask is that we have a Pick-N-Pull here and I dont think ill have much luck finding an SVX, but im sure they have other subies. If any of these parts are compatible, what year and model would they be?? Im low on funds so any help with identifying the suitable replacements I could find there would be GREATLY appreciated :) (pick-n-pull is a DIY yard, and they are very inexpensive, which is good) |
Re: Timing belt parts interchangability?
I am almost certain no other t-belts work and pretty sure that the pulleys don't work as well but not as sure on them.

Re: Timing belt parts interchangability?
I may just have a low millage t-belt with all pulleys and tensioners that I could send you.

If its a package deal ill still buy it all, im cool with just the R cam pulley and belt though if you'd like to keep some spare parts. |

Dude, I just picked all that stuff up, along with a waterpump and gaskets, for about 150. Used belts? Really?

Re: Timing belt parts interchangability?
Bump: Ok so im getting a nice used low mileage belt from a member here shortly, have installed my waterpump, cleaned the burnt belt off my idlers, and now I have to deal with the cam gear issue.
I have decided to yank the cam gear, clean it with solvent, and secure the outer ring back on with acid-core solder (-hears Tom shrieking-). The ring seems secure as is but I want to make doubly sure it will stay on.... and I dont want to pay $75 new for something I can confidently fix. Now as far as the idlers go, they ARE supposed to have some pretty good resistance to spinning right? I mean theyre not supposed to spin like skateboard wheels correct? Mine are silent and smooth but take some effort to turn.... typical of a high speed bearing? Once I get her going ill be happy like this http://i545.photobucket.com/albums/h...5377760_53.gif |

I can't imagine anything in the equation that acid core solder would be strong enough to have a chance to repair. Maybe when I get fully awake I will get it? Might be best to go back to bed... Keith:) |

I tried going back to bed and I am not doing that much better now that I am up again. I seriously hope tyhat I am dreaming this whole thing and will wake up and come to the computer and nothing about this will actually be there.. I still am not getting it. I know there is a sprocket that is bolted on each of the cam shafts on my car, but haven't a clue what we are talking about here. Since I don't have any plumbers solder anyway, I would still be in trouble if I understood. So far, thank God, I don't think I need that fix anyhow. Keith:) |

LoL Keith, yeah its the sprocket at the end of the cams..... they have retainer rings on the front and rear that hold the belt in the center while its spinning. My front-side ring popped off in the whole waterpump debacle, so I pressed it back on and reinforced it with some solder to make sure it doesnt happen again under normal operating conditions. |
Re: Timing belt parts interchangability?
Thanks for sharing that with me.
I didn't realize that was the way it was made! Information might come in handy for me as well as others some day:) Keith |
