Slipping Transmission Question

Can someone describe to me exactly what the symptoms of a slipping transmission are. I'm a newb with auto trannys.

Shift lag.

Decreasing accelleration. It would feel like a power loss.

If you suspect your tranny is slipping don't rev the engine too high.

It acts like a sliping clutch.
The revs go up and the car does not speed up.
Stop driving the car,
drain and refill the transmission,
adjust the trans band,
Pray to God.
Change the trans filter (in the pan)
make sure the trans cooler in the radiator is not clogged.

this is what i was afraid of i believe my trans is slipping in fourth gear. at like 2.5k rpms i'm doing like 75mph. and if i let off the gas it drops down about 300rpm. does that seem like a slipping trans?

NikFu S. 10-02-2006 03:01 PM

Does the tach even read that low?

I'm pretty sure you would stall running if you hit 300 rpm.

You could be having a line pressure drop. I had this problem before the rebuild. You might be do for one of the gaskets or O-ring or something. I forget what it is.

Tony117s 10-02-2006 03:03 PM

no no it drops from 2.5k @75 mph when i'm on throttle down 300 to ~2.2k when i'm off throttle

NikFu S. 10-02-2006 03:04 PM

Oh ok, I had that bass ackwards.

Seems pretty normal to me.

The only time your rpms should stay the same is if your TC is locked.

I could be wrong. Maybe still could be the same problem, low pressure.

oh ok i thought something was messed up with it. oh well it seems to be running perfectly fine downlow and it had strong pull up top. i guess nothing is wrong i'm just paranoid with something being a miss since it got smashed.

NikFu S. 10-02-2006 03:09 PM

I rarely drive the highway so I could be completely off. I have a feeling if your pressure was perfect your rpms might remain stable at that speed as you slowly decellerate, and the rpms should slowly decrease..

Cruising at 75 in 4th is different that city cruising because the tranny can't shift up or down or whatever it does to keep the ride smooth.

I'd wait for someone else to chime in here to be sure.

One more thing, are you sure your torque converter wasn't locked?

Because it should be (unless tranny temp was low), and if it was you have trouble.

well today it ran fine. Everything was perfect. I believe yesterday my TC didn't lock up. I guess it didn't get heated up fully or something.

Make sure your TPS is adjusted to 0.50 volta when closed.
If the TPS is missadjusted the TQ will not lock up!:)
