Alternate tranny filters?
Anybody know a suitable replacement for the external tranny filter put on 92 models? I ask because my closest dealer is 180 mile round trip and my local parts shop says they don't even have a listing for an in-line.
I know I can do this over the net - just wondering if anybody has investigated an alternative - for example I found modern Ducati oil filters work on my old Norton Commando. |
If your local parts store uses ATP tranny filters (most do) they do have inline filters - you'll need a 3/8" filter. Any NAPA store should also be able to help. Or you could always upgrade to a spin on filter kit - they use a typical Ford/Fram PH8A filter, available anywhere in the world. Plus I would think that due to their size clogging wouldn't be an issue, and they have built-in bypass valves in case the media does clog.

Hmm...that sounds like a very interesting alternative Beav. I'll have to look into that when it comes time to replace mine again. But if lee just want a replacement filter, he could get the other kit. I think it's for a Legacy, Outback, or one of those other models. When I ordered mine last year, the entire kit, including filter, hoses, clamps, mounting hardware was only $12 and they didn't need a VIN!

Engine filter for trans filter?
Not to sure about this, just that the engine oil filter is much finer that a trans filter, which is more like a screen, and works at a much higher pressure. The finer filter may restrict the cooler flow. What do you think?.

ATF filter vice engine filter
Interesting. I hadn't thought about flow-rate/pressure issues. I really was simply wondering if the Subaru filter was a spin-on and what engine filters had the same threads/gasket size.
I amaze myself with what I learn from asking questions before I start something- you'd think I would do it more often. But alas, my usual mode of operation seems to be ask only after I've managed to achieve FUBAR status. |

I have been running a remote filter that uses an oil filter for about a year and a half. I have not had any problems.:) There are some pictures in my locker in the tranny cooler file. |

My transmission filter kit (Perma-Cool)listed some of the filters that could be used with it. One of them was Fram PH8A. Hope this helps.

so, back to my original, but badly asked question....
is the Subaru filter a spin-on, and if so, does anybody know a suitable substitute - threads, gasket? I have the factory filter kit installed - just getting my tranny reinstalled after a grenading differential an thought it was a bit of safety measure to change the filter.

Originally the only filter was the screen inside the trans. When the cooler situation was discovered they came out with the external filter kit. It is a slip on filter, similar to an in line fuel filter.

slip on???
This is stupid I know, but I thought I knew what an inline was (like old American car fuel filters, excepting that bronze thing). Anyway, mine looks like a spin on - I always thought it was the Subaru factory kit filter, maybe it isn't after all.
Anybody's personal locker got a close-up of the factory external by the radiator? |

Here is a link that shows what a spin on canister type filter looks like. This is a kit, but it will look pretty much the same no mater what the brand it. Hope this helps.:) http://www.perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page25.html |
kit prices?
i got my tranny cooler installed :D, now im lookign into getting the inline Filter.. besides the perma-coo,l is there any other kit? and..
what prices!?! perma-cool's site doesnt even show prices.:D luis.. |
The transmission specialist I go to has fitted a cooler for me but will not fit a filter. He has a lot of experience and talks sense. When he has to do work on abused Subarus he removes the external filter.
He says that clogged filters cost a lot of people a lot of money. A regularly serviced car will not benefit and a poorly serviced one will get by without a filter but is doomed with one. A filter presents the same problem as the obstructed cooler entry on the 92. You do away with one and fit another. |
