Front Axles

I can feel a vibration at 70 mph, especially when I accelerate. Tires have been rotated and balanced. I had new front axles installed 9000 miles past. While under the car, I noticed that the inside part of the axle (looks like a green soup can) that attaches to the transmission output drive, has significant play when jiggled by hand. Is this normal?

what does significant play mean to you.

this is a pin that should be in the axle, perhaps that was left out (or fell out).

Significant Play

It wobbles by slight hand maipulation. Hard to measure but I think that the fixed end should be fairly solid with no play. The pin is in.

Woobling Sucks

I'm having the same problem with mine. It also has alot of bump steer. Anyone has had this problem? I replaced my axles and has the wheels balanced but the problem is there. You can feel alot of bump steer especially while going in a curve.

Bump Steer: The sharp movement of the steering wheel in your hand when you go over a bump or rut in the road.

That was for those who are wondering what the hell bump steer is.

Are you sure that your problem isn't caused by a bad lower ball joint or tie rod end?

I think you're absolutely right - there should be no play at all. Hopefully the play is in your axle and not inside the diff. <cringe>

That's what I'm thinking.. That I have play in the Lower ball joing or either the Tie Rod end.. I'm going to check that.....I'll probally just replace them anyway. I have 70K miles on the car (1995 model) and I drive it like hell sometimes. I added 19 Inch wheels to it a few months back...

Yeah, let us know what you find. This is the first time I've heard someone accuse their SVX of bump steer, so I'd like to hear what the cause was.

Sounds like a Transaxle to me. I had same issue, vibration at high speeds, then as I drove for another 1000 miles the vibration got worse and the axle became easily diagnos-able by a good mechanic.
At the same time the lower ball joint could be replaced for you just in case, cause it should be removed to swap out the axle. And don't forget the 4 wheel alignment.
