Going 4.444 next week!

Hello all, long time no see.

The SVX finally crapped out 3rd and 4th gears so I've been flogging it around in 1st and 2nd for the past 2 weeks. It's been entertaining on the highway, to say the least.

Going in is a JDM Legacy B4 GT-B twin-turbo wagon automatic transmission, from the '98/'99 timeframe.

It's got the beefier center diff like the overseas SVXes had, and has the 4.444 ratios, with sportier gearing than the USDM Outback transmissions. I'm expecting more than a second shaved off the 0-60, and mine was already pretty quick off the line as SVXes go. :)

We're putting it together at the new shop, I'll take many pics to keep you guys appraised of the progress. :D :D

Hey Matt, missed you when I was in Greenville the other week. Harry met up with us at Barley's and had a calzone.

Ya, he said you had to meet your wife for something family related. It was the weekend that you met up with Harry, when they busted the Impreza. LOL

Holy cow Porter! Haven't heard from you in months. That 4.44 trans you're putting in sounds awesome!

Welcome to the 4.11/4.44 club!

Thanks man, I'm curious to see whether the TCU will control it. :) Same number of wires, same configuration, so here goes nothing. Geronimo! :D

I've played around with a TCU from an awd '93 n/a Legacy before Jason. The thing that'll be the shocker is the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts w/o the engine torque reduction (since Legacys never had this).

Even if I'm using the SVX TCU? I thought the TCU sent the signal for the torque reduction... is it the trans instead?

Earthworm 12-11-2004 04:37 PM

I think he's referring to the TCU from the Legacy not having the torque reduction.

Aha! Whew, worried me. I thought I was going to have to get crazy with the wiring diagrams. :)

Oh and for those that are interested.... Subarunet TechInfo (http://techinfo.subaru.com) now has all the SVX service manuals back to 1993.

Yup, $19.99, download as much as you can. :)

Yup, David is right on. The TCU for the SVX causes the torque reduction. Who knows though, as this TCU is from a JDM twin turbo wagon, the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts may have torque reduction to keep the trans from shattering into a million pieces. The torque those Subaru 2.0L twin-turbo engines put out will put the EG33's to shame!

P.S. Sounds like it'll be a straight forward swap. What kind of rear diff are you using Porter? The one from the JDM wagon or one from a USDM Forester/ Legacy Outback?
