Tires on 17 Inch Wheels/Rims
I am going to buy 17 Inch Wheels. I know that the closest to OEM size (225 50 16) is a 225 45 17 but it is slightly larger. I dont like the fender gap on stock wheels and tires. It will be similar with the 17s. What would be the best size to close the gap but not have any issues(rubbing, speedometer, and etc)?
Thanks |

Didn't you already have wheels?
I have 245/40 on my 17s. No rub if your struts work. Even less rub if you get less wide tires. |
With 245/45/17 what sort of modifications would one need to do? 245's seem awfully big, what sort of offset are on your rims? I'm guessing you'd need to replace the rear struts/springs and stiffen the suspention, especially if the rear is sagging, which tends to happen quite often.
I have 225/45/17's on my 94, and the gap doesn't look bad. If you want to go larger, make sure you stiffen the suspention, because bumps and rough roads will cause you to run into clearance issues when the springs compress. You could lower the suspention iwth coilovers, but just stiffen it up. This will decrease the ride quality at a bonus of appearance. Personally i love how mine rides, but with the 215's on the front of my teal, they're to narrow and i brake traction when pulling out suddenly from a stop sign, so 245's would be nice if i could find rims iwth the right offset. |
Tire size
I run 215 45 17 NO problems
That's about 95" circufrence.. NO problems with any systems (speedo etc) Ian Ohhhhhhhhh the car handles FABULOUSLY |
Tire sizes you can run on a 17" wheel are:
205/50/17, -1% speedo error. 215/45/17, +1% error. 225/45/17, -0.5% error. 235/45/17, -2% error. 245/40/17, +0.5% error. 255/40/17, -0.7% error. ... 505/20/17, 0.4% error.:D ;) |
