One More Time!!!

Okay, I stopped by the tranny rebuilder's today. Told him what was happening. He said, bring her in any time next week. We'll put the pressure gauages on her and hook her up to the monitor to see if there are any codes to see what's going on. It's supposed to snow on Tuesday, so, I'm not taking her in before that (gotta check her out in the snow first :) ). So, I'll probably take her in on Wednesday. I suspect they'll keep her for a couple of days, so, I'm gonna be grouchy! Actually, with my history, I'll probably get her back at around 5 PM on April 4th -- just in time to head out for Reading III.

Concentrate all the "good thoughts" you can, in my direction next week. Hopefully, a simple brake band adjustment will cure the problem.

Unfortunately, the tach doesn't lie. :( It's the 2-3 shift flare I was experiencing just before they kept it for 24 days with a diagnosed faulty TPS.

1994SubaruSVX 02-01-2002 02:13 PM

seriously randy......

explain what you mean? 2-3 flare meaning that it will not shift, takes too long to shift, what?

I'm begining to think my bearing noise is a combination of my snow tires, and me thinking i should have my bearings going soon... Too much knowledge can always be a bad thing.

Basically, it means "slippage." It's not enough slippage to keep your car from going forward, just enough to make the tach rev (or "flare") a few RPM's when you're shifting from gear 1 to gear 2. Interestingly enough, it only happens under load (If I'm trying to beat a car before it hits me when I'm pulling out from a stop sign, or, if I'm stop light racing).

Randy i,

Odd how if I really put my foot in it, it grabs fine. My flare occurs tween 2 - 3 and under light acceleration. Wierd.

What would you recommend from experience. Should I try a rebuild of the existing tranny or pay $2840 for a reman tranny from Subaru dealer? 2 yr/36000 warranty.

No contest, there, Randy ii. If I'd been quoted 2,840 instead of 4,600, I'd have had the Suby reman in a heartbeat. But, you can see why had to take an alternate route. That, and the fact that the Vermont Meet was a week away and the dealership said it would be ten days before they could even get the trans in. So, go for the Suby Reman -- unless, of course, Beav has found out that Jasper has SVX remans and you have someone in FL to put it in. The Jasper trans would be guaranteed for 3 years.

Origianl Randy,

Thanks for the advice. I only wish I had a way to get to Washington State. Now would be a great time for a 5 speed conv. (This is my first auto in 17 -18 years) Sigh...

If I can ask. what is a "Jasper"? Also what is the plastic dishwasher thingy you use to remove the buttons on the dash?

Jasper is a world renowned engine builder/rebuilder based in Jasper, Indiana. They've been building racing engines for years and are a popular choice for replacement engines. I wasn't even aware that they had transmissions until Beave mentioned it.

The "pot scraper" that I use for removing my switches is a flat piece of plastic/nylon, about two inches square with rounded edges. My wife uses them to scrape food off her non stick pots 'n' pans. You can probably find them where the spatulas and other cooking accessories are, in your local grocery store or Wal-Mart. I've never had to buy one since my wife always has a few lying around.

I just went to their site and they list nothing online for Subaru's. I'll call the number tomorrow to see what info I can obtain. "World Renowned"...sounds spensive.

I'll also PM Beav to see what he may know. Now, I guess I'm off to Walmart. Do you think it will be in utensiles or the automotive section.:)

I had the same problem with the 2-3 flare as well, I then disconnected the drop resistor behind the battery and have driven it that way for over 40k at first it would shift hard into 2nd but eventually stopped. I understand you wanting it to be perfect since you paid so much for your rebuild, but it's not worth having it rebuilt again.
The reason your trans isn't sluggish when on it is because the line pressure is increased drastically.

I had this problem on my transmission with the 2 to 3 shift and it was the TPS. After I replaced it the problem went away. You may want to check out the TPS. You can find it in the how-to personal locker. It may be worth a try.

Beav 02-03-2002 07:12 PM

Ooops...sorry..

..I completely forgot to find out about Jasper tranny. We had a tech quit last week and my normally busy schedule just got enhanced. ;) I haven't even had time to buy the car I was talking about a couple weeks ago.

When you replaced the TPS, did you have to have it set to spec by a dealer or could you just remove and replace?

The first time I had this happen, they diagnosed it as a faulty TPS (after burning up the High Clutch in diagnosis and after about 13 days later  ). I would hate to think that my TPS was out AGAIN (took me 11 days to get the darned thing in). I'm scheduled to take it in for diagnosis "sometime this week." We're expecting snow, though, and therefore, I won't take it in until AFTER that. :D

Thanks for the advice. I have travelled down this road. We checked the TPS and it is fine. Not only that but now these units cost just over $200.00 from both the dealer and NAPA auto parts.

I was really convinced and hoping it was the TPS.

I kinda jumped the gun I guess. Due to our proximity to them, we use a number of their products where I work. On the day I made mention of them I had just tripped over their site. Not recalling ever having a problem with their products, I made the post. I suppose I should have said it would be worthwhile to see if they remanufactured transmissions for Subies, yadda, yadda, yadda... Sorry to stir everything up, I guess only half my brain was engaged that morning.

It's snowing. :(

Yep...its snowing here too. Started just after I got home from school. Just a couple of inches so far; we will probably have a two hour delay for school tomorrow. Jean gets to do White Oak Mountain going into work tonight, but the Impreza has Guardex's so she should do just fine....

....a few angels riding shotgun also helps.

Snow....sleet....rain...fog

Well, I just got back from taking Jean to work. Figured it was getting a bit bad out there and since she could ride back with a friend in the morning, I would not have to go back over the mountain. A few Jeeps and 4x4 trucks were the only things out there on the way over; on the way back there was a T-bird in a ditch. No way THAT car should have tried the mountain tonight. The road was completely white, no scraper or cinders, about two inches of snow with sleet on top. I don't care what anyone says....Impreza's are great bad-weather cars. Having good ice/snow tires doesn't hurt either. :) Don

Aredubjay 02-06-2002 09:24 PM

Maybe it'll be out by then.

Well, the snow stopped, no accumulation. Let's hope it don't snow overnight. I had to drive the company Production Van home (full size Ford Panel Van). It would not be a good "Snow-goer." Not a peep from the Tranny shop. Thus ends day one. Will live in hope for tomorrow. :(

Be careful out there, Don. There's something omenous about the words, "ice, snow, mountains, ditches, etc." Remind me to bore you with the story about, "Me, freezing drizzle, RWD Fiat 128, 40 miles, dark, curves, hills etc." That was the time I think I truly learned "How to Drive".

For me it was in 1970 in a (borrowed) RWD Datsun 510, 2 inches, bald tires, (really HOT) date. I think we pushed (with the wheels spinning in first gear) that thing up every hill in Iowa City that night. I think it was the last night I saw Joyce, too.

SVXphile 02-07-2002 12:45 PM

Icy reception...

I really have to thank the US Navy for helping me learn about driving in slippery conditions. I had to take my turn driving the pickup truck assigned to our division in Iceland. No weight in the back, manual on the column, "snow" tires ('72). I didn't become a WRC driver, but I did learn a HEALTHY respect for low-grip situations. Gear down (it was easy to use only 1st and 2nd last night...no one was behind me!), allow plenty of room from the vehicle ahead, no sudden moves, believe there is an egg between your foot and the brake, and above all...be SMOOTH. Like last night, I planned my move around the T-bird long before I got to it, so I did not have to make any major turns of the wheel under VERY slippery conditions.

The only time I have ever be stopped on that mountain was a true ice storm. There was an inch or two of pure ice on everything; you could have held an Olympic event on the road itself. I had the Swift with Blizzaks and after reaching the ridgetop, realized that things were even worse up ahead; that I was asking for big trouble if I tried to continue. I tried to turn around in a driveway, but slid backwards down a dip in it for about 20 ft. I continued to back uphill passed the dip until I lost all grip. Then I slowly accelerated back into the dip and up onto the road, yanked the wheel and slid sideways to a stop in the middle of the road. I then decended the mountain VERY SLOWLY until I got home, kissed the ground, praised the Lord, and made a promise never to take on pure ice again.

The safest way to drive in bad conditions, is to not drive to begin with!

svxter 02-07-2002 01:50 PM

You got that right. I was fishtailing up a steep grade on my way to work from Settle to Glasgow (KY). There was a milk truck that had run off the road and into a ditch. People were standing around, waiting. They had called a wrecker. How do I know this? Because as I was fishtailing up the hill, I noticed, what I thought was an 18-Wheeler fishtailing down the hill toward me. It was actually a Kenworth Wrecker that they'd called to pull the milk truck out of the ditch. Luckily, I zigged when he zagged and he zagged when I zigged and we missed each other. The only major problem caused by the ordeal was that I think I was constipated for a week!! :D:D:D

Slip sliding away. Riding thru PA on rt80 from NJ. Going to Jackson Hole for a ski trip while in college. I am not driving, my friend is, two more sleeping in the back seat. It was raining and the road was freezing. It was about 10 pm and after a long plateau came the down hill. ( near Lock Haven) A very long down hill. Traveling along at the speed of a car sliding on ice, about 40 mph. The brakes would not slow the car down. Watching cars in front of us. Tail lights, head lights, tail lights head lights sliding off the road. Passing another car in the ditch at the side of the road.

A guy starts to slide into our lane. Our driver turns the wheel franticly to the left. All the way until the steering wheel the locks. Our car is still going straight. Then in about 10 seconds it starts to turn and we clear the car next to us by about 3 inches at the back our bumper as the rear slide toward that car. Pass the car as the rear starts to fish tail to the right.

Our driver once again with rapid turns to the right. The car does not respond, take about 10 seconds and then starts to turn and fish tail again. After about 6 turns of the wheel completely from lock to lock with total lack of response from the car and fishing tailing in between, the car was finally going straight. Only about 6 near misses in all. Just one of those life experiences one can't forget about.

We went to look for a hotel but they was all booked.
After that the driver gave the car over to me and had a really hard time with me driving at 70 mph on a wet road, the ice was gone. After he fell asleep from his ordeal it was smooth driving.

This was a lot worse then time in Canada on snow.

ICE

SVXphile 02-07-2002 07:20 PM

Slip slidin' away....
