Techy's engine pull progress thread
When I'm done with this engine pull and reseal I'm hoping/planning to put together a full How-To complete with all part numbers and lots of pictures.
In the mean time I've got a whole bunch of pictures I figured I could share with you kind folks. So, here are a few pictures of what was done tonight. Some are detail pics that will be in the final writeup. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull009.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull012.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull014.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull025.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull028.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...44ced0a1_b.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull032.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull040.jpg |

It couldn't possibly be this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull041.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...30547715_b.jpg And finally, here's the cam sprocket that I broke trying to get it off:mad: There should be another lip on the side closest to the camera http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull067.jpg |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Nice set of pics. The first time pulling the engine we missed disconnecting one of the solid power steering hoses and bent it lifting the engine out.

Excellant post brother....Keep um coming....:D

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Some more pictures. I just finished cleaning up the super-mess we created when we were pulling the motor, and then all my tools that had been thrown into one bag for a trip to U Pull R Parts. It turns out that they got a 92 SVX in about a month ago, but it was almost complete. Probably because it's been so darn cold up here until today.
It was a huge mud pit, and I ended up using the door cards as a step stool to stay above the 3" of water that was right in front of the car. Anyway, here are the pictures. First is a picture of my spoils :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull008.jpg Here's what a bit of elbow grease and a lot of noxious chemicals can do http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull004.jpg Engine mounted on the stand http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull005.jpg And here are pictures of my old motor mounts. They were completely separated, and came off the car like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull003.jpg |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
If you wrote a writeup for removing the engine I'd love you........ no homo. Seriously because I need/want to pull the engine in my Barcelona, but not too sure where to start. Seriously please do, I really want do this, I have a plus, no ABS module in the way.

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
good documentation, the toughest part imo is the ps lines on the crossmember.

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Well, two steps forward, one step back.
It seems that I broke my second thing. The mass of EGR stuff on the back of the EG33 was rusted to hell and I managed to not only shear of 4 frozen bolts, but also accidentally break a plastic thing that a hose fits over on one of the valves. So I'm working on a way to rectify this problem. I have a few hoses that will need replacing because they were totally trashed and got cut to remove. I managed to remove one of the heads tonight, and I think I did it without breaking anything more than the EGR stuff. I've got a few questions but will put them in a thread in the technical sub-forum where they belong. Anyway, here are the pictures from today. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull002-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull003-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull010-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull011-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull013-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull015-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull016-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull018-1.jpg Motor mount plate before cleaning http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull019-1.jpg After cleaning! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ePull020-1.jpg |

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Today was nothing too special.
I slept in today and ran some errands. But I did get some work done. I figured I'd get to cleaning the garage out so I can find tools again ;) That took a couple of hours. Then on to the work First was cleaning out the throttle body. Made a pretty big difference. Second, it was on to pulling the other head. So yeah, here are some pictures. Throttle body prior to cleaning: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull026.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...inePull027.jpg Now after cleaning http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3005.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3011.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3013.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...svxday3015.jpg |

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
It's always amazing to see just how good things can look with 17 years of grime cleaned off. Are you going to take the short block down any further, or just refurbish from here?

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Techy, thanks so much for posting all the pics. Couple of questions:
What cleaning products are you using to remove all the dirt and grime? If you are planning to break down the cylinder head, what tool are you anticipating to use to remove the piston ring clips and piston pins? Thanks, Chris |

I'm using Gunk engine brite, Purple Power, and Seafoam for cleaning products. I'm also using steel, brass, and nylon brushes of various sizes. I was thinking about breaking down the block even farther, but now I'm thinking not. I'm already way over budget and without someone who has done that before helping I think it would be a potential disaster. |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Good work. I went through the same process for my Claret, except that many of the parts went to powdercoating. Now, Im just waiting for them to return so that assembly will be a reality. :o

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
What is powder coating, someone:confused:

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
very nice pics.
i recently did this, but i was doing it in the mudpit that you had to endure in picknpull:rolleyes: the hardest part for me was figuring out how the 2002 wrx clutch connected... other than that the eg33 is straightforward.... soooooo much easier than hondas and toyotas i have worked on. with all the proper tools, lifts, and a garage, i would dare say that looks like fun! my mounts looked like that too... my new motor had nice stock mounts tho, but i opted for the group n mounts. if you are looking for a set of nice stock motor mounts, i am selling some right herrr good luck ! i know you will enjoy the spoils spoils of your victory |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Today was another slow day. Did some cleaning of the timing belt covers, got the damn cranks sprocket off, pulled the oil pump, did some cleaning, put it back on with a new o-ring and front main seal.
Also did some grinding of one of the motor mounts. To get the crank sprocket off I had to tap the two holes in it and use a steering wheel puller. And after a lot of cleaning it went back on without any trouble whatsoever. Anyway, here are pictures: Motor Mount Plate http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3002.jpg Clean timing belt covers http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3005.jpg Steering wheel puller on the crank sprocket http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3006.jpg It was pretty rusty http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3012.jpg More rust http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3015.jpg Oil Pump http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3017.jpg After rust removal brigade http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3020.jpg Crank Sprocket and the little key thing http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3023.jpg Back together http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...04/day3026.jpg |

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Well crap!
I just remembered that I forgot to remove the bolt holding the intake cam gears together:mad: Another "I feel like a dumbass" moment At least I remembered now and not later. |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
More work done today. Not as much as I'd hoped, a friend lost her job so I spent a while with her. Friends trump car.
But I got the oil pan put back on, although I think I probably used too much RTV. Hopefully it won't be a problem. Also removed my bolt from the intake cam gear from last night. Then it was just putting things back together. Slow going, but I'm making progress. For anyone else doing this, label the hoses. There were a few that I labeled, but most I figured would make sense because of location. Not so much. It's making things take a lot longer. I couldn't find a plug for the EGR hole in the exhaust manifold, so I finally just cut the pipe and had someone weld it shut. Oh, and I installed the locking pin in the front passenger half shaft @ the diff. I have had some suspension noise ever since I got the car, and when we got it apart I noticed that that locking pin has been missing since I bought the car:eek: So not cool. It was a pain to get in, but hopefully it'll make things better. Finally, tomorrow my ebay timing belt kit will be here. Here are today's pictures: The offending bolt: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7001.jpg Oil pan on: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7002.jpg Intake Manifold http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7007.jpg My solution for the EGR line on the intake manifold side http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7012.jpg I used high temp silicone to re-attach the little brackets that hold the coil pack wires on. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7017.jpg Starting to come together http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7020.jpg My welded and re-installed EGR thing http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7023.jpg And finally my new locking pin http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y%207/7027.jpg |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Now would have been a good time to install some thermo spacers on the intake.
|
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Im surprised you didn't paint the intake plenum since it was off, but the engine is coming along very nicely :)

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Looks really good, nice work! I'm actually doing the exact same thing, but school's making it take about a thousand times longer I anticipated... Anyway I had a couple of questions:
1. I noticed the copper spray-a-gasket, is that really helpful and should it be applied to all gaskets or just the head gaskets? 2. As far as that egr hose off the exhaust manifold, what effect does just plugging the hole have? 3. And you haven't gotten there yet but like you were saying, I was thinking the hoses are going to be a pain. When i took the intake manifold off those egr hoses broke like twigs. So I guess the question is when you break hoses like that, can you just get a hose that has the same specs and cut it to length or do you have to get the oem hoses? |
Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Quote:
1. The copper gasket sealer was recommended to me by the folks over at the local dealer. I used it on the head gaskets and on the intake manifold gaskets, although I didn't take a picture of the intake manifold ones after they were sprayed. 2. I removed the whole EGR system, so to keep exhaust from filling everything up I needed to plug the hole. Don't want a big old exhaust leak in the engine bay! 3. For a few of the hoses (PCV, etc...) that are molded in very odd shapes I have gotten OEM, but for other stuff I just get lengths of hose from the local auto parts store. |

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread
Today was a lot of cleaning, and waiting for the nice UPS lady to show up.
My eBay timing belt kit came in and I am very happy with the quality. It was purchased from The Import Experts on ebay (they also have a website). Since they have a brick and mortar store they have a phone number posted on their website. I was able to call and arrange expedited shipping. They were a pleasure to deal with and I would highly recommend them to anyone. (They show as shipping from Washington State) I am having a hell of a time with the rear main seal. It took up most of my night so I finally gave up. Here are the pictures: Cleaner cross-member http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...morenew003.jpg Clean Power Steering Pump http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...morenew005.jpg Cleaned up PS and Alt. tension bracket.
