What can we do?

Chris? Do you need our help with this? I'm feeling guilty that I've gotten so much from this board. I feel like I could be contributing more...

again... is there anything we (I) can do to help?

immortal_suby 02-20-2004 06:38 PM

Anyone with paypal can easily make a donation to Chris for his time and money in keeping the network alive. In the past I have used xxxxxxxxxxxxx in paypal to go directly to Chris.
(I hope posting that doesn't get me in trouble, but you deserve some help, Chris - and you're too modest to ask for it)

Using paypal@subaru-svx.net will go to the official svx network treasury which will then divy up the funds with part of it going to the cost of running this server.

ensteele 02-21-2004 12:04 AM

I was just thinking the same thing. Aren't membership fees due again? Sounds like some $$ may be needed. I was going to PM Chris and find out if that would help.

WestCoastSVX 02-21-2004 10:57 AM

I'm still confused on this. Where else do the funds that go to subaru-svx.net go besides Chris and the server when they are "divyed up"? If the "club" end of it isn't doing anything besides funding the server, seems like some confusion could be eliminated by just having one paypal and no "membership dues".

Or maybe I'm just in the dark about this and someone could it explain it to me better than has been. :)

At any rate, thanks for Chris's Paypal address, I asked him directly for it a couple months ago and never heard back (probably that modesty you are talking about ;)). I have a bunch of people that have been waiting for this info so they can help contribute to this site they have gained from. :)

Chris 02-21-2004 02:54 PM

That is an old email address that I seriously doubt will work with paypal.
Give me some time and I will arrange a proper donation lifeline. This will be quite helpful very soon since we will be paying more for bandwidth again. To be honest, the "club" portion was baying for bandwidth for a while until I moved the server and never set up billing again. If anyone has a good deal on a Cisco router that is capable of VLANs and has a WIC slot, please let me know. I am going to unfortunately purchase one soon for the T1 end. Thinking about a 1751 series.

Subafreak 02-22-2004 12:58 PM

I have a nice Black and Decker router that can cut some nice V-lines and has an adapter for making all kinds of slots. Will that help:confused: :D

I've seen it! at least in it's previous generation. Chis does a great job, All the way around. I still have the video of him winning the class at Thunderbird raceway last year in his bone stock teal SVX (us teals have to stick together)

Chis , I've done some editing on this but don't quite know how to get it hosted... I'm willing to take suggestions. And you should see my modest contribution tonight when I get home on a secure computer..

Chris,

I have a spare Cisco 2524 that I would be happy to donate provided the cost of shipping it to you from the UK is not excessive. It has a T1 module installed and I believe it is capable of VLANS.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/...boa/boaovr.htm

Send me an email if it meets your requirement and we'll discuss further.

Failing that, I have a few newer ones at work - 1600 and 2600 series. But I would have to sell them rather than donate them. :(

Let me know.

Phil Skuse.

immortal_suby 03-01-2004 05:27 PM

If that router is what we need I'll chip in some of the shipping charges. :)

I can edit it, and host it. PM me if you want.

I don't make much money, but I'd be willing to contribute. Just don't ask for too much, because I need it to fix my exhaust, windshield, paint, etc etc etc. You understand we have to keep the SVXs in good condition. Gotta 'represent'. ;)

possible solution to problem

Here are the issues and problems and some proposed solutions.

Issue 1. subaru-svx.net is popular (good problem to have)
Issue 2. subaru-svx.net needs bandwidth to support it's growth
Issue 3. subaru-svx.net needs to ensure that the dedicated server stays secure.
Problem 1. Bandwidth costs money.
Problem 2. Management costs money.
Problem 3. Resources to keep box live to the world have been negative flowing vs. positive flowing (costs more to keep it up that to move it or shut it down)

Solution:
QWK.net is in the web hosting business. Out of the approximately 2300 registered users of this site, many of you have personal web page space that you are paying another provider for. I would bet that the statistic is probably 15-20% have separate web pages for various hobbies, companies and your cars. If you guy's with the subaru-svx forum are willing to move your individual personal sites to qwk.net so that there is an increased revenue stream. I will rack the server in our managed space, I will have one of my full time techs make sure the box stays at current patch levels and I will double the bandwidth allocation that was currently going to this server. I would bet that out of the 2300(roughly) registered users that we could easily come up with a minimum of 100 accounts to transfer. I would prefer to see 150-200, but let's see if we can get a 100 first(about 4% of the registered users).

Based on the bandwidth that we have seen consumed, this server will become congested with the bandwidth allocation that will be available after it moves. The best solution is to keep it connected with a large pipe to the world, but the cost has to be justified.

This is simple business marketing. If you help generate revenue to justify the allocation of time and resources then I will make sure the box stays secure and is fed with good, pure, bandwidth.

If you guy's want to do this, I will create some new hosting plans dedicated for this transfer so that we can track the users that sign up.

Let me know what you guy's think. Let's make this a win/win situation.

What kind of pricing are we looking at for each site if we move ours over? I've got my site running off a server in my house now, but if the price is not too high, offloading the site's bandwidth usage on my DSL line could be beneficial at times.

Paying our share

Hi everyone, I was able to send a small donation through the paypal account that subaru-svx has.
If everyone would kick in a little it would not be a big deal for each of us. I understand that we have people with deep pockets and no pockets. Just do the best you can. And the younger members will get a chance to donate when the older members are gone. Take care, BOBB

pricing starts at $49.00 per year (4.08 per month) with our starter special. I would recommend our $7.50 per month/$79.00 per year as the minimum.

Here is the link to the currently advertised hosting plans: http://www.qwk.net/shared.html

If this is of interest to people, I will create some special hosting plans so we can track how many people are actually signing up.

Thanks

Quinn

Its too bad, i have access to a t1, i wonder if any of the other tech guys would notice the bandwith being sucked dry?"

Is there a way to mirror the site, it would be so safe here....in DOWNTOWN SALT LAKE CITY. Make the same site, but mirror it, have it update both locations simultaneously? or something, so nothing is lost, and then if one is messed up, the other will be up? Cuz i could throw a 486 in the closet with a t1, and a few beer bottles on top of it, and nobody would notice it...;)

BEWARE! I dont know where that money went. I do not have a paypal acount set up for this site as of yet.

Stevebsy 03-10-2004 09:00 PM

Fear not

Chris - The paypal@subaru-svx.net money is safe. I have the password for it as treasurer. A PM is in your box to discuss how to make the transfer.

Uncamitzi 03-11-2004 08:19 AM

Yikes...

Perhaps we should ask for a receipt for what we sent from someone here that we recognize? Did you receive my meager donation? Paypal said you did....

WestCoastSVX 03-11-2004 11:50 AM

Yeah it is a nice gesture you guys are stepping out and making donations, but Chris (the guy you are trying to get money to) posted a while ago that he would be setting up something for donations shortly and to wait until then.

Uncamitzi 03-11-2004 02:26 PM

I don't know that I had earmarked the money specificly for the server... I thought that at subaru-svx.net the money would go to the "overlords" to make sure that things got paid for.... was I wrong?

WestCoastSVX 03-11-2004 03:20 PM

No worries, Mitch, sounds like you sent your monies to the account Steve has the password for, so it is in good hands and will go to the right place. ;)

I was just saying to avoid any more confusion, everyone else should probably just wait for Chris or someone to make a big announcement that they are offiically accepting donations. If the money is needed urgently, I'm sure it will be asked for! :D

Chris,

If you are going to buy any new Cisco products, let me know. My gf is currently working for Cisco and can get the employee discount. I don't know how much the discount amounts to, but I would be happy to check it out if you want.

We "overlords" have been keeping watch over the monies entrusted to us and will see that it gets distributed appropriately. Fear not. :)

Things in the "club" have been in a flux of late, however, Stevebsy, our treasurer, is keeping tabs and will make sure all monies earmarked will go to Chris for the server and we will be looking at other "club" matters and deciding what to do. Stay tuned.

Any monies, sent straight to Chris, or to the subaru-svx.net address are in good hands and will get dispersed properly, I assure you.

I expected no less... but a word from THE " SVX Overlord" dispels much trepidation.
