Laughing or jealous ?

I am having a hard time figuring out response to my recently
obtained '92 SVX.
It's in very nice shape with only 75k
I hit a giant pot hole on Sunday and blew out a front tire so I
was in the tire shop getting it fixed and I can see when they
pull it in three or four of the guys kinda give it a strange look
and walk around it. Finally one has to read the name on the
trunk to figure it out. When it's done no one says anything to me.
A few weeks earlier I was at the suby dealer and I asked him
if he gets any others in. He kinda smiles and says two others come
in for work.
So I can't tell if they are snickering at me or just don't know what to make of it. What responses do you guys and gals get ?
I love it anyway so it's just a curioius point for me.

Took my 94 in for some AC work. Response was Wow, what a cool car.

Took it in again (different shop) for help diagnosing my intermittent stalling problem.

They refered to it as "the SVX from hell" Needless to say, they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.

ensteele 12-22-2005 07:25 AM

Most that can't figure out what it is just snicker. The most common response is "what the heck is that". Usually driving up the road, they move forward and back trying to read what it is. Then go into serious discussion. :)

when i first got mine, i noticed people staring all the time, i think they've gotten used to it by now though. the best is when people think it is something it is not, i've gotten anywhere from Ford Probe to Ferrari. My favorite was when someone thought it was a Lotus Espirit........ :D

This happened yesterday. Young lady in a BMW M5 Convertable. "I can't believe it! An SVX. I wanted one soo bad when I was 16 but my parents said it was too expensive"

They bend into redic angles to look through the little window, it is funny.

Brings to mind a funny story - I was pulled over for speeding in ohio, and of course I rolled the window down so the officer could talk to me. He indicated he wanted me to join him in his cruiser, so being summer and very hot, I made sure that I rolled the window back up so my wife could wait in the cool air of the car.
Now...the '92 SVX has the auto-UP feature, and unfortunately the cop had his hand on the window frame. ;)
Yep, the SVX nipped him!:D

No, I didn't get off with a warning....:(

Three days ago after shopping, I'm walking back to the car, when about 10 paces from it, a middle aged couple is passing by the rear end, & he's pointing.

He - "See that"?
She - "Uh-huh"
He - "I always liked those"
She - "Uh-huh"

Uh....I was driving the old Nissan 240SX at the time.
Close, but no cigar.

Ron.

I have been pulled over because they did not know what it was. They just said as they got to my window "what the heck is that?" :D

When she was 16, a new SVX was only $30,000 to $35,000. I don't think she was even aware about the famous "4HEAT" ;) :) :)

Only? Ya got a lottery ticket in your pocket or sumthin? Only?

In 1992 dollars, that was like..... like.... like a lot of dollars!

ensteele 12-23-2005 10:56 AM

Only? Yes, I was a little sarcastic with that one. :D :D

It was a lot of money. "Gee daddy, I like that shinny white and black one with the funny windows. Can I have it?" ;)

bwb3 12-23-2005 12:46 PM

I would estimate she was now in her mid-20's. Noticed a wedding ring and shiney rock.

Probably right. :( :(

I get mixed responses to my SVX. It is no show car and looks 100% stock, so i guess most people just think it is any other car. I have people admire it's look and individuality among imports but many have giggled to say that it is ugly. No one really knows much about them around here and many could care less. I had to laugh when I asked the guy in the inspection station if he could find reverse ok... he reluctantly said... we don't need to put it in reverse... only make sure the lights are not on when in gear. It is was funny to see how the inspection guys will keep their pride by not fully inspecting the car:) Anyway, I know my car looks and drive incredibly well and I repspect it for that. All of the cops around here know who it is when they see the "funny" windows so I don't usually get pulled over. Now I just need some 10%tint all around to give it that streamline look. Maybe a little lowering from some coilovers and some front splitters from dayle. Anyway I find the most common reaction is confusion followed by random "is it fast/turbo" comments from the kids pumping gas

ensteele 12-23-2005 02:05 PM

Tom - just tell the kids that it has the works! :) :) :)

T.McCaw 12-24-2005 12:38 AM

A friend of my wife was trying to discribe my car to her husband....after a time she gave up and said for crying out loud its a Bond car!

I was spending a weekend home with my parents one, and we were all comfortably in our beds. My Dad came rushing into my room and said "Isaac, I think someone is trying to break into your car!" we ran outside in our underwear to fend off the attackers, but the person had gotten in another white car and was driving away (kind of quickly) . I still think that it was probably just another admirerer/perplexed individual who had to get a closer look on a dark night . My dad isn't used to the car getting attention. :)

This thread is making me miss my car even more! I am deployed with the AF right now, and have not seen my baby for 3 months!:( I am compensating by purchasing all sorts of goodies for it though, so when I get back it will be even sweeter than before.:D

I had a state trooper pull me over one day. I rolled down my window and he raps on the fixed portion of the door glass with his knuckles and says "put this one down too"

I said it doesn't go down... and he asks "why?'

As he looks at it more closely, and realizes it never did and never will, he realized he must have sounded a little stupid. after a little speech, he just let me off with a verbal warning.

Probably at least 30! Rich girls just look younger:lol:

When I was buying some parts from my local Subaru dealership they said that they had worked on two others (one of them being the emerald pearl I bought not too long ago). Anyway, he said that he hated working on these cars and wished me the best of luck.

The majority of the comments on the car are positive. I love watching peoples reaction...especially since there are very very few SVXs in Frederick.

BUT... you aren't that far from NJ. Which does mean you aren't too far from a lot. Come to find out the two biggest places to find SVX's are NJ and CO. Cause of the winter weather mmatched with all the money some poeple have floating around. Now mine's from my sister-in-law from her father. Her father bought it new and gave it to her in 98 when her and my brother graduated from West Point(30 year after my father did the same) And well the funny part was she asked for a Viper and had to "settle" with the SVX. lol:lol: . Anywho they just had a kid so I now have the SVX here in NH. Oh and yes it was from NJ. I told my sister-in-law I'd try to keep it running another 16 years. Thusly I've named it Heirloom.
On topic now. I talked to a guy I work with about the car before I picked it up and he mentioned a friend he had used to have an XT. A week later I got into work and as he was walking in I asked "So what do you think?" he replied "What's up with the windows?!" and nothing more. I've also had people ask what year it is and when informed of it's 94' status they said "I thought it was at least a 2003."
Really we need a new Alcyone to continue the tradition of "WTF"s. XT to SVX now what's next? I mean everything else is coming back why can't Subaru make up for the 08' Impreza with a 09' SVX like car?
