Chap Stick Addiction

So I have a chap stick addiction...(9 years) and tonight I have decided I need to quit, so cold turkey it is...it's been 3 minutes and I am already having withdrawals:( this sucks but has to be done. DONT BECOME AN ADDICT!!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHH the PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

petesvx2 10-06-2003 04:03 PM

AHHH

Landshark 10-06-2003 04:10 PM

try taking up smoking. :D

petesvx2 10-06-2003 04:12 PM

this sucks!!!!!! im gonna go eat some sunflower seeds or something
maybe thats a harmless addiction

Mr. Pockets 10-06-2003 04:16 PM

Is being addicted to Chap Stick really detrimental to your health?

petesvx2 10-06-2003 04:32 PM

Basically....well I think its the menthol in it, but it's not necessarily bad, just a burden...search for chap stick addiction on google and you'll find a site that tells you all about the addiction....33 minutes and still clean !!!!!:D

Mr. Pockets 10-06-2003 04:53 PM

http://www.kevdo.com/lipbalm/home.html

That site is the most ridiculous effing thing I've seen in a long time. Hey, here's a hypothesis for you guys. Maybe Chap-Stick isn't addictive - maybe you're all just friggin' obsessive-compulsive.

I don't mean any offense to you, Pete. Sometimes, even after all these years, I still can't believe the stuff I see on the web.

Edit: I also can't believe, after all these years, that I'll be taken by a humor site like that. For crying out loud, after all of the similar sites I've seen, you'd think I would have learned my lesson by now.

Darksied-X 10-06-2003 04:58 PM

So, whats gonna happen come this winter, when your lips start to hurt?

Like Alan said, just take up smoking, it works for me. Plus, they do make menthol cigarettes, if thats you problem.:D

CigarJohnny 10-07-2003 10:32 AM

LOL...didn't we have this same conversation around the same time last year?

petesvx2 10-07-2003 11:25 AM

yep...day two of the saga and im already a puss....i used it last night...but i did go "sober" for 2 hours! ill go for 3 tomorrow:D

svx_commuter 10-07-2003 11:48 AM

Pete, I stay away from the lip balms that use crude oil products, like petroleum jelly and the other renames, as I THINK it can't really be a good thing for MY lips. In fact I think it dries them out. I suggest you try drinking more water as that works for when the lips are dry.

(I have edited the above because I have no proof of this.)

petesvx2 10-07-2003 11:57 AM

yeah the one i use now is 41% petroleum...ill try to find like some kind of all natural one maybe that will help...i drink a lot of water as it is, i think it may be a mental thing more than a physical dependency...whichever it is it sucks. that was 2 hours of hell for me.

I would look for something to back that up before I just made a blanket statement like that. Sure, if there's convincing evidence that petroleum-based products like that aren't good for you, then by all means stay away from them. But how long have we been using Vaseline and such? Nearly a century?

Edit:

After a quick look on the web (with Google, which Doug never would have thought of using), I found nothing to support the claim that petroleum-based lip balms were harmful in any way. I did find some claims that skin isn't able to breathe or excrete quite as well when a petroleum product is applied, but no evidence to support the claims. Besides, I thought that was the point. You put a petroleum-based lip balm on to keep your lips from losing moisture.

Actually, one lady went so far as to recommend this process:

"Put a cracker in a cup of water and another cracker in a cup of baby oil. Let them sit a minute. Watch what happens to the cracker (representing your skin) in water. Now, take the cracker out of the baby oil and break it in half. Puzzled... well, you could keep that cracker in there from here until the end of the world and it'll still be crisp just like it popped right out of the box!"

What's her point? That water dissolves skin and mineral oil doesn't? That skin is similar to a baked or fried snack product?

It's ridiculous pseudo-science like this that drives me up the friggin' wall. What's my point, after all this? If you think something's bad for you, well, maybe you're right. But for crying out loud, look into it first before you come to your conclusions.

Landshark 10-07-2003 12:40 PM

replace the Chapstick with Lipstick and you should be cured in no time........maybe. :D

petesvx2 10-07-2003 01:03 PM

hahahaha when i did stop using it for those 2 hours, my lips started to hurt and get chapped almost immediately...i know that in time that will go away but it hurts lol and idk if i can handle that...on the bright side i have soft lips for all those fine ladies out there ;)

yeah svx_commuter..don't blanket a statement like that. drinking more water won't help...BUT drinking beer is the solution!!!!!!!!!!!
everytime you have an urge to apply petroleum-based lip balm have a beer or two. after a while, you won't feel the need for lip balm.

BAN the BALM, Drink Beer Instead!!!!!!

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! You guys are right I have no proof. I have edited my prior post and I absolute agree with you that any product which could be harmful has been thoroughly tested and removed from the market or never even brought to the market in the first place. It is just a personal preference of mine to try and keep crude oil products off and out of my body.

petesvx2 10-08-2003 10:57 AM

I rub crude oil in every nook and crann....did i say that outloud?

Hysterical. :D

SubaruPartsGirl 10-08-2003 01:16 PM

"Pain is weakness leaving the body."

Remember that for your own sake...

This is the last thing I thought I would see on a car forum...ROFLMAO!

Perhaps you should throw away your current chapstick...if you have it, you can use it. And if you really have trouble...try finding a chapstick that you do not find appealing to use so you will be less likely to want it. Or perhaps, try putting the chapstick in a drawer or cabinet that is on the opposite side of the house from where you normaly sit, then you will have to get up and walk to the chapstick to use it, therefore you will use it less.

I used these techniques to quit smoking.

It didn't work worth crap for me but hey...worth a shot right?

petesvx2 10-08-2003 02:12 PM

well the main reason i have to quit is because of the coast guard, in boot camp you can only have certain things in your pockets at any certain time, so basically if i wait until i go to quit it will just be even more stressful...idk maybe cold turkey maybe just gradual im stuck lol, ill figure it out hopefully:)

I agree. I mean, give me a chain-smoking, alcoholic with yellow teeth and a beer gut any day. Yummy!

But seriously, I never use ChapStick ... it actually dries out my lips. But everyone's chemistry is different. For some people (*cough*driverdave*cough) using ChapStick every other minute produces soft, dry lips. So ... who knows?

Switching to lipstick would certainly cure your boot camp problem lickety-split... :)

I occasionally put on some sort of lip balm in the winter. I drink a lot of water during the day, but in the winter I still end up with dry, cracked lips. No fun.

petesvx2 10-09-2003 03:37 PM

LOL Rob, that was lame...first off, I'm not gay, and nor do I have anything against anyone who is. Obviously you have a problem with it but whatever it's not part of this discussion. I use ChapStick. The medicated kind....none of that fruity tutie lip smackers crap. I'm sorry if my lifestyle offends you. :( well not really...when my tube runs out though I'll be sure to make a road trip to throw the empty on your lawn....WHILE blasting some Tupac on the way by. :D

Chicane 10-09-2003 04:51 PM

No dude, keep reading it. I don't have a problem with gay people, in fact, I used to be friends with quite a few of them (haven't seen em in a while but they liked cars heh). Anyway, that isn't it. Reread it.

svx_commuter 10-09-2003 05:49 PM

Lucky for you that Rob doesn't like Chapstick or he might want to be your friend. Lucky you! Then again, cause your not gay you safe. He did say "I'd rather hang out with the gay man." Well your two times lucky. No worry about Rob wanting to be your friend, your safe. :D
