Exactly as I would have suspected. I've seen that site quite a few times.

Re: Front diff cracked

got the new diff ready to go in along with the drive pinion. just dont know how to remove the old drive gear out of the transmission.

Also for additional damage, I got a froze up left axle, bad right axle, 2 shredded ball joints, 2 shredded endlinks, and the transmission mount is in 2 pieces.

I think it's a 35mm socket to remove the staked nut at the back of the pinion shaft.

Be careful when dis-assembling the back of the pinion shaft, the parking pawl and the gear it engages is held there and you need to take note of how it gets reassembled.

Keep track of the shims around the bearing plate at the front of the pinion shaft

Replace the oil seals on the bearing plate

Thnaks Dave, it was a 35mm. I got the nut off so the question is do I remove the gears behind it? If so how do I go about doing that? And should I replace the nut? thanks

EDIT: Nevermind I got it off. I ordered a new nut and gasket. just need to slap all the stuff back on, torque everything, get the new axles and ill be driving again.

Update. The pinion shaft I got was an updated one which I also insatlled the updated parking gear so it will fit. So far the trans is done, threadlocked the shaft bolts and rtv the diff last night. Just need the axles out to get new ones then reassemble.

Re: Front diff cracked

Update: The trans is mounted to the motor. just need the axles in, exhaust, and drive shaft.

Sounds good. and good luck.

my car got a new diff a year before I bought it. It was done at a shop that didnt know enough about subaru awd. they f'd up the wire plug to solenoid C and never reconnected it.
its good you have it under control.

I just read this from the beginning. It is amazing what you can learn when you have to. I am glad you got everything done and learned a lot on the way. I have a lot to learn about these svx's.

Re: Front diff cracked

Its defiantly a learning experience. As of now the car drove around the block in all gears perfect. Just need to address a trans leak, add more fluid, tighten exhaust.

Re: Front diff cracked

Got the trans leak fixed just for another to pop up. Got it fixed then drove it 60 miles no issues. SUCCESS!!!!
