Ok... got some pics in my locker. They are of the driver's side TB. the silicone hose is in place of the original coolant line. so look at the side of your TB, and the line that's in that location is the one that will be full of Mountain Dew. It sticks straight out towards the side of the car. The other line is on the other side of the throttle body, but it points downwards instead of sideways, and a little towards the back of the car. I tried to get a pic but couldn't get in there.

These pics are just to tide everyone over. over the weekend I'll try to get some step-by-step pics. but these should be enough to show you where to work. it may be a good idea to leave off the cladding so you can monitor the bypass line for a day or two.

as far as this mod being detrimental, I asked on nasioc about it. several people did this mod at around the same time a couple years ago. so far only a few have replied, but there are no negative comments.

thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=573302

that's all I got for now. I'll be glad to answer any questions, and I'll be posting how-to pics this weekend. it should be fairly obvious when you get in there though. lemme know how it goes, all.

Cool pics IggDawg! Thanks for the link to thread of NASIOC...seems like the Impreza guys love the mod! :)

i just did this mod today and while i was doing the mod my intake was hot enough that i didnt want to touch it too much. after i did it i drove around awhile and when i got back i felt the intake and it was the same tempurature or colder than before. this is awesome in my opinion. give me a few more days and i will see if there are any side effects at all.

.

i just routed a coolant hose from the water pipe to the nipple coming off the heater hose/tube. i'll let you know if this works well.

Wow this looks like a great way to keep intake air temperatures down.

The only possible BAD effect I see from this is that with a cold intake and a hot block the thermal growth will be different. The intake will want to be smaller than the block because it's colder then the block. The intake does have the cross sectional area of the block so the block will grow and try to s t r e t c h the intake manifold. This could result in a crack but I doubt it because the intake is rather beefy. The other problem might be that the intake manifold bolts become loose. Heck that is common happening even without this modification. I think it can't be any worse than cold weather operation.

Does anyone know if this helps to gain power? Any track times differences?

results

well here are the results from the by-pass test. after doing about an hour of highway driving, speeds around 70-80 and outside temp at 87, i popped my hood and placed the palm of my hand directly on the manifold and........................burnt the palm of my hand!!! i can feel no difference in the temp of the manifold from the outside of it. it feels the same as before the bypass mod. maybe its a little cooler inside i really don't know. as for performance, i have the 5-speed installed so i really can't compare. i'm going to keep the mod in place until winter/or i see a problem with the mod. maybe someone has different results?

the intake manifold will probably stay warm if not hot. thus the thread about phenolic spacers :D . the main benefit of this is that the throttle bodies, specifically the butterfly valves, stay cooler. the butterfly valves are important because they are directly in the path of the airflow. they will heat up the air charge more than the throttle body walls since they're right there in the middle. This is especially true when you're at part throttle and the valves act like a pair of small dams. The iris valve also transmits a bunch of heat IMO, and I'm looking forward to seeing what phenolic spacers will do for this car. I've found it to be much more useful in colder weather anyways. the effects will certainly get better as the weather gets cooler.

I mainly posted this as a FYI and a sort of prelude to other mods. phenolic spacers would be kinda useless if the TBs are still heated.

I mite be kinda late from when this was posted... but i read this
and i did it for $5. My Responce was GREATLY improved here in Florida... the heat is a KILLER to the air, so it was kinda dumb to be making the air in the TB even hotter.

Thanks for this post!

Thanks... And also...
I have put pictures in my personal Locker of the Bypass
Pics from the driver side, where I used 3/8 Caps from Napa
to close off the TB Water Inlets, and also a closeup, from the
passenger side, of the hoses together.
