I'm thinking Reno/Lake Tahoe area, 2nd to last week of June.

I need help with this, please give me your input.

Sounds great! Since this is being planned so far out, is this going to be promoted as "very big" :p meet? Like as much hype as Reading, something everyone west of the Mississippi should consider? (and some from east too, if they want to be where the serious action is:D )

Can you ski out there in the summer. :D

I'd really like this to be big, but I need some help with the planning as well as getting the message out to everyone.

I need to know what dates would work, I was thinking the 3rd weekend in June.

But maybe if I show my support here some other may join in. (or run away!;) )

Once we have decided for sure the time I will help organize some events. Throwing out some things to do in the Reno area. Harrahs car museum, Reno air race (they must have some kind of museum with a photo op area?) a Drive down to Virgina City and mines, I'll look for some more but those are what came to my weak little mind... any other ideas... of course there is a little gambling that goes on there...... ;)

What a great idea, he he. I'll be there day or shine.

Tahoe...love that place......

I'm a bit far from that area and never really been there so I probably won't be much help with planning events, locations, etc. But I will definitely help with promotion and some other organizing details. Anyone that glances down in the NW forums knows I can do that. :D

I'd like this to be bigger than what we could set up in just a few short months. Besides that, I personally don't have any time available to me to attend this summer.

Sounds good to me both ways, hehe. That is actually an interesting idea. See if you can bring people together from all over US, like for the 10th Anniversary. Ahhh.......... i missed that one.

How about a morning or afternoon here?

I will call them and see what kind of lunch or dinner we might be able to do there.... ?? Just a shot in the dark to try to get this going again..

...more support from the Northwest checking in here: let me know what I can do. I would very much enjoy a chance to help plan and participate in such an event, whether big, medium or whatever. Shoot, I'd go this year with no notice, just for the enjoyment of the drive. I was planning a solo tour of NoCal sometime this summer anyway!

I believe Larry worked on the 10th Anniversary meet for over two years. Coordinating all the elements, especially in a popular area like this that probably books up a year in advance will take time.

Then again, the history of the NW meets tells us that a "big meet" planned and hyped for two months will yield 2-3 SVXes, while a spur of the moment mini-meet will yield 6-7 SVXes, sometimes twice that.

As they say a journey of a million miles begins with the first step... I've contacted the museum and will be receiving information about their availability and rates here at my work place shortly. I've asked them for dates in the spring and summer. I'll be back with some firm dates shortly... (of course if there are any other ideas.... I'd be open) This place has just finished with another "subaru group" and I will try to get some more details of this last event from their sales person.

WestCoastSVX
05-01-2003, 01:20 PM
So you are looking into a private tour of the museum for our group basically? Where's it at in relation to other attractions, where we'd be staying, cities, etc?

Thanks for getting this thing going Mitch! :)

Uncamitzi
05-01-2003, 03:42 PM
ok... he's making a list and checking it once in a while...

We need to set a firm (or semi firm) date and I need to start getting a commitment from people that will be attending or planning to attend.

The Banquet area of the museum holds anywhere from 25-1500 people....

mmmmmm, he said 1500 people..........

Now here's the goal...

#1 let's figure out what the dates are going to be

and #2 how many people want to spend a rip roaring weekend in the Greatest Little City in America!!!

Here's my best dates... your's may vary.. but let's work together on this...

June 18-20th 2004 Third weekend in June 2004.... Schools out and it's not really hot yet..(maybe) and my hotel has very little planned..in the way of events....

and the List starts here

I want to be second on the list! :p

I'm checking with Corrina right now for that date, but we aren't doing anything I know of 3rd week of June this year so shouldn't be next year. :) The big catch for me (aside from losing the SVX somehow :( ) would be that we are in process of trying for our first offspring and depending on when the little one arrives, we may not be able to go. So my entry varies from just me, to me plus one, or even plus two... or not at all. I really hope I can go though, this looks to be my first chance at a Reading-like event. :)

Now.. I'm not one (a father that is) and ,I've lost my father (I didn't really lose him ...he's in an oak box on the shelf near my fireplace...:rolleyes) and I think that bringing your father to a SVX meet would be great.. but if we need to move the date now is the time...

I'm in. I just got back today from a couple of days in Reno. I make it my job to make sure the casinos stay in business. ;)

Let me know if I can be of any help organizing.

BTW, Reno is not the Greatest Little City in America, it's the Biggest Little City in America. It not sure if that's the official slogan or if it was voted "Best Biggest Little City in America". For those who have never been to Reno, every place proclaims to be "Voted Best <fill in the blank>". For example, Big Joe's Greasy Spoon Voted Best Burger (and in very small print) in 1970 by people related to the owner.

Thanks Matt,

Good to hear from you again! I knew it was something like best, biggest, bestist... or the like... do they still have the sign over the street? I'm going to make a trip to the museum to check on the facility and start to work up a menu for the dinner. We don't need to sign a contract until the first of the year, but I would like to firm up the date and get a guess of attendees.

If we do it a week earlier are we going to stumble into Graduation for people? and if we do it a week later we might run into pre fourth of July problems.... (and Chis's meet up in Boise..)

Up here in WA most HS graduations happen the first couple of weeks of June. Not sure in other areas though. Guess it would be a factor whether anyone planning to attend would be affected by that. (similar to if anyone would be affected by Father's Day)

As for July 4th, it would still be a week after, but in my case that gets tricky. I know we will be going to a family reunion in Pismo that weekend. So do I hope for a SVX meet the weekend before and then stretch out the whole week in the Bay area before going down to Pismo? Or do I push for it earlier and then fly down a couple weekends later for the reunion? I'm just one person of many that hopefully will be attending, but just the kinds of things everyone has to think about, and QUICKLY! :)

We move it to coincide with READING next year...?? Just a thought... I really want this to happen before my car and I get too old...;)

Have a West and East meet and then every 2nd year do a central to get the two groups together... ??

It would be really great to have a Western SVX meet.

Father's day weekend would not be good for me bacause that's also the weekend of the 2004 national DeLorean Car Show (my other toy) (June 17-20).

As you get later into summer you may want to hold the meet at Tahoe. Reno can get very hot in the summer. You can then use the 'caravan' day to go over the hill into Reno to the car museum. They can arrange a lunch in the museum for the group. I've already done this same event for my DeLorean group plus I put on a big Gullwing car show in San Ramon in 2001.

There are lots of little details to take care of and it will cost some $$ to use the hotel facilities, but it can be a real blast to put on and attend a big event.

If anyone might have missed the poll in the General Babble section, please vote here (http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10468) . Mitch is just trying to get an idea of when we want to do this so he can start getting an idea on reserving facilities, etc. :)

Mitch, just go ahead and set the date!!!!
I voted but it really doesn't matter to me which weekend in June it is. In the last week or so only ten people have voted and you still can't pick a definite weekend cause the votes are evenly distributed.
I suggest to take Fathers Day weekend out of the formula (again, it doesn't matter to me) because as soon as Fathers day was mentioned people stopped signing up:eek:
And lets get the sign up list going again - there's only three people on it.
Just my 2 cents.

Hah! I wish it snowed every day of the year in Tahoe. All the resorts close late April-early May. But Squaw usually opens up the top of the mountain over the 4th of July holiday for one last ski bash. The snow is slushy and you ski in a t-shirt. The best part is the giant hot tub at high camp at the top of the tram. Skiing and girls in bikinis make a good combination.

I'm up for this, thrid week of June ought to work out well, it's when pretty much every college is out and generally after everyone has partied themselves silly. I'm personally up for a nice drive through Old Truckee, 30 or so SVX's would make that an interesting little event. Right up off 80 past Tahoe Donner, on through whatever side-road that is and straight on to Boomtown and Reno. Sorry, getting carried away here, haven't been up there in 6 months and I'm getting antsy. But yeah, contact me @ chrisden@chrisdenise.com and I'l help put stuff together, plan, etc. I've been waiting for a meet in a beautiful area like that.

It'll be vaguely chilly, but seriously folks, let's not plan for skiing here, I've only been up there in June once when there was enough dirty frost lying around that you could ski on, not to burst bubbles here, but there are plenty of other things available. Hiking, Race tracks, gambling... gambling... some more gambling, Reno is kind of a small less flashy version of Vegas, so plan accordingly, that's all. Hope this works!

One of the things we could do over the weekend is to take a trip to the south shore of Lake Tahoe. From Reno, it's a drive over Mt Rose and then around the eastern half of the lake. Beautiful views. Once in South Tahoe, there is plenty to do. There are tours of the lake aboard the M.S. Dixie II
http://www.tahoedixie2.com/
or we could go to the newly opened Heavenly village in the heart of South Tahoe. They have a gondola we could take up. Having skied Heavenly many times, I can say that the top of the mountain has the best views of the lake. I picked up a brochure over the holidays and scanned in the info.

Let me know if you think either of these things is a good idea and I'll look into it further.

either, blocked works, but if some of us are a little cash flow impaired, it might be easier to forego set spending limits, i'm cool either way.

I think getting us all setup at one hotel would be best. Just try to make the hotel a reasonably priced one so that anyone could afford it.

The rooms don't have to be that nice, since we spend most of our time in the parking lot anyways :p :p

If we want to stay at a casino, I recommend Atlantis or Peppermill. They are both nice and have large parking lots where we can gather. The casinos downtown are a PITA to park at. There are several small and cheap (i.e dumpy) motor lodges downtown. Near the airport is a Best Western, La Quinta and a Residence Inn. All three are nice.

Anybody know the best way to go about getting a group rate?

I would agree. It would be nice for most of us to stay at the same place. Best to look for a good parking lot, and then look at the rooms. :D I would stay away from the casinos and even get out of town a ways to get best rates and nice place. If people want to gamble, they can go to the casinos. Thanks for any work you guys are doing for us. :)

I know, I know, I need to get my rear in gear and start talking to hotels. I have a friend who is a reservationist for Choice Hotels. I think I'll start with her.

I'll just have to assume that the names on the sign-up list are still all intending on coming and use that as a potential room count.

Does anyone has a AAA membership? Two years ago, me and three other guys were staying at Best Wester, in Carson City, for only $20 a night. I am not sure how my friend got this rate, i know one thing for sure that it was for only 1 or two people. The rest, we had to sneak in the room. I will ask him though, has to do with some discount for member or something.

Nik... I'm not sure I want to stay in a hotel that charges 20.00 per night even with my aaa card...!!! (I'm kind of a hotel snob..) I work at very nice hotel...

I think a block rate with a lot of double bedded rooms would work. (I'll take a single King):D

Again... sorry i'm late...

Yeah, I'd prefer not to stay in a hotel that rents rooms by the hour. I do have AAA membership, though.

Hey, that is just a suggestion. I survive as good as I can. You have to understand me, I am still a college student, so as for me, I can sleep pretty much anywhere, as long as it is fairly inexpensive.
BTW, Best Western is a very nice hotel. Although I haven't really been to that many for me to judge.

Has it been determined for sure where the bulk of the meet is being held exactly? I assume most of the activity will be centered near the hotel that is decided. Is that going to be in Reno itself, or more by Tahoe?

I wanna go to the auto museum, see lake Tahoe, drive by Pyramid lake and get a picture of my car in front of a *****house. Hopefully that'll fit in with the itinerary. :)

Right, and in the illegal states they probably wouldn't have any sign advertising it so the picture wouldn't look like much. :)

I'm not up on all that stuff, but I was under the impression that those establishments were only legal around the Vegas area and not up north by Reno. Could be wrong though.

I guess either way though, if you really want to get a picture like that, this trip would probably be your best chance since the car will be most of the way there already. ;)

They're near Reno too:
Nevada Brothel Directory (http://www.nvbrothels.net/directory.htm)

And not getting a picture of a brothel in Nevada would be like not getting a pic of a cactus in Arizona or the space needle in Seattle, it's just a defining piece of scenery. And think of all the fun I'll have shocking people who browse through my photo album. :p

oops sorry... I quoted the wrong one... I guess for some reason the date was left at the third weekend in June... that would be Friday Saturday and Sunday (or any combination) I have the Auto Museum reserved for the 20th (saturday) I think that I'm going to cancel the dinner idea as if we want to get this going I need a firmer commitment from the attendees and right now It looks like we could do the whole thing on a 10top (70" table set for 10)

Is the meet happening on the 19th or the 26th and if it's the 19th do we need to do a new sign-up thread? I signed up for the 25-27, grumble... :(

Earlier in this thread there was something about the auto museum on the 26th, would that be the 20th now, and I thought the 20th was a Sunday?

Yeah I *thought* I was paying pretty good attention to everything related to this meet, and now suddenly I heard from somone that they got a PM that the meet was a week early. And now the auto museum is scheduled for a week earlier, so that's making me think maybe it is a week earlier....

Formal announcement?

New thread?

Start an official sign up list so the organizers know how many to plan for?

All...
I'm sorry if I gave anyone the wrong info, but I thought that we had decided that the 19th-20th weekend was the one we were shooting for. That's how I've been planning all my stuff anyway! :(
I need Mitch to correct me if he has been working with the museum for the next weekend.

FYI, I conversed via email with a tour coordinator (someone to help me find a good location to have our actual meet, accomodations, etc) today and she told me that the 3rd weekend is much better than the 4th weekend. The 4th weekend is mostly booked up because of rodeos and large conventions already scheduled. We should take this into consideration.

I'd really like to know how many people are seriously going to attend. I ball-parked it at 20-30 cars. Oh, do we want secure parking? I don't know why it would necessarily be an issue, but it was a question she asked me. I would guess that it would cost us.

Again, I'm sorry for any additional confusion to which I may have contributed. Guess we really need to get this "set in stone."

Alycone
03-16-2004, 05:09 PM
Well, we did start by saying the 3rd weekend (which should be the 18th to 20th), but the sign-up thread said June 25 to 27 (weekend of the 3rd full week) and the car museum was first said to be on the 26th...... confusing. If it is definitely the 18th to 20th then we need a new sign-up thread to make sure people know what they're signing up for.

Is the car musuem going to be on the 20th or on the Saturday? (It can't be both!) If it's on a Sunday, we might want to make sure we do it early enough for people who need to get home for work on Monday.

Actually, it's fully illegal in Vegas. I've actually looked that up. Why? Doing some research for some class back in school.

I think I said something useful. Now Troy will know that they are illegal in Vegas. They are legal in the next county north of vegas (I believe 50 miles or so away).

Ok guys, I don't know how the room situation is going to work. If our meet really is the last weekend of June, the rooms are pretty much booked up according to the tour person I've been talking with. She says that there is much more availability the 3rd weekend.

So.....
1) We need to confirm the date
2) I need to know how many folks are really planning on coming so that I can try to block rooms
3) I guess mainly I need to know if you still want me to try to do this......

Seems like it might be a good idea to firm up the date and get some posts out advertising it more. Then start a strictly sign up thread to help you determine your numbers, this thread is too long and messy for you to get real numbers.

Just my opinion though. :)

The U.S. Formula 1 Grand Prix @ Indianapolis is the weekend of June 19 + 20!
They moved the date from August to June THIS year. Curious how many people this will affect?
Now I MUST make a decision...can't be in 2 places @ 1 time...
