Can anyone explain the SVX's passive 4ws system?

Habesha,

Yes.
Sorry, but on USA model SVX's there is no 4WS system, passive or otherwise.

Randy..... Eddy. Let's go!!!!

Seriously, you can perform a search on this subject, it goes by many names, passive AWS, NOT AWS, 4WS, etc.

A large disagreement over this subject is available.

My opinion.....well it's NOT steering in the traditional sense, specifically, there is no tie rod to 'steer' each wheel, but the rear wheels DO in fact toe in and out slightly with differing loads. Any arguments with that will be delt with swiftly.

Is that steering? In some minds, yes and others no. You can look at the suspension in detail an make your own opinion. I'll have to go get that nice diagram of the rear end and post it someday.

Nowhere in my official Subaru literature does it mention 4WS or AWS, so where did you hear such terms?

I will just sit, watch and whistle. I want to see if anything repeats from previous posts...

seem to aid or assist in steering. that was a pretty good description, that was my first time reading that. it didnt really appear to be an ad more like a honest description of what is occuring based on their observations or design. just my opinion.

I'm sorry, but you seem to have gotten that sentence mixed up. It should read...Is that steering? In some no minds, yes.:D

It IS steering... if you think you can steer your front wheels by removing the rack and using a lever to chage the toe in/out.

If you take steering to mean "cause change in direction" then the answer might be yes.

No, I take that back. It is not steering at all-- the toe chage does not occur until AFTER the car has started to turn. The change in suspension geometery is a result of steering, the change in toe does not cause steering.

Don't worry Kevin. You don't have AWS. One of my big failings is that I cannot convince people that they are ignorant of how the car works despite my best efforts. The fact that your bushings *react* to certain outside forces upon them does not constitute steering...in any sense. Unfortunately I have not found the rock large enough to pound this into some folks heads.

So it doesn't work the the 4WS on my Dart? If I put a locked rear end in it, I would only have 2WS, as the rear would "hop" around any corner I took. With the limited slip rear end that I have(in the car) when I go around a corner the wheels turn at different speeds. Isn't this like the AWS in my SVX?:D

P.S. Eddycat, please read the above with Velvet in hand, and smile on face as I am just being a smart$@ss.

Oh I understand completely. (Sigh). I only wish that I were the type of person when something is said that people actually listened. And yes, as a matter of fact I have a velvet in hand. But hey, after a few velvets, who cares what they think, if they want to continue to think they have AWS, who am I to take away the illusion?

LarryIII, have you heard anymore on that bridge in Brooklyn I bought from you? I'm getting a little concerned here, my wife thinks I paid way too much!:D

I sure do miss Peppe, at least with his 980+ HP SVX we could all share a good laff! Seems he faded away when the due date for his proof came and went.

you know damn well aredub is not saying at all that he has AWS. in fact he has admitted that he doesnt. he simply saying there is a toe-in toe-out effect that allows the car to turn better. for simplicity purposes it is easier to call it passive AWS. because it mimics some of the effects of AWS. did you even read some of the sites he posted? maybe four wheel steering is a more accurate description.
