View Full Version : Serious bad luck!! HELP!

Well, I guess with no replies, nobody had their fingers crossed for me.

Had my house burgled Friday last, door broken, small amount of money taken, a lot of large pieces of crystal and some jewellery. Could have been a lot worse. But the bad luck continues......

Rang the transmission specialist yesterday [Monday] to enquire if he had my SVX ready. He said he would have had, except that his workshop was broken into and robbed. They stole all the best of his tools, about £3000 worh of Snap-On gear, his diagnostic computer for electronic transmissions, [another £3000 worth], a Mercedes 300E which they used to haul away the stuff, and last but not least, my SVX gearbox!!!

Of course, in loading the haul into the Merc, they used my bootlid[trunk] as a handy platform for the metal boxes. And the black paint is scored right down to the white plastic!

I am not sure if I am mad or disappointed or something in between. To my knowledge, there are only three SVXs in the whole of Ireland. What they are going to do with my tranny is beyond knowing.

I will have to claim the value of the tranny from the garage insurance, and I would appreciate your help here. Could you guys give me an indication of what a replacement tranny costs with no trade-in? Much appreciated if you can.

Joe:mad:

Joe,
Helen had e-mailed Megan about your bad fortune. I'd meant to get 'round to offering my condolensces, but, things have been rather crazy. Of course, she hadn't mentioned the SVX side of the story. I'm so sorry. I'm angry enough for you and me, so, if you'll keep a cool head, I'll do the swearing, ranting and stomping from this side of the pond, while you get things squared away on that side.

At any rate, here's what they're getting in the states for a new tranny w/o core exchange:

for the help. I am all ranted out!!:)

Helen would not have known about the car I think. Pat is going to rebuild the old box I had stored away, so at least I am not in the position of waiting on a replacement from Japan! My car could be off road for months with that scenario.

However, I will be looking for the replacement value from the insurance. After all, I had two trannies, now I have only one, no spare, and out of pocket too.

I'm hoping Andy or Arthur or someone with a non-import can price a replacement box in the UK for me. The US box is diifferent, the drive to the rear is not done the same. Likely in fact that the UK/Japanese box is a good deal more expensive.

Hopefully by the end of the week there will be light at the end of the tunnel that is not on the nose of a train!!

Joe, I am so sorry to hear about the terrible luck that has befallen you.

Good luck with resolving the matter through the insurance and I am sure that the SVX will be back better than ever!!

Let's just hope the misery gods have exhausted your lifetime quota of aggrevation in one fell swoop, & will move on, never to return to you, Joe. They can stay out of my backyard as well.
Best wishes from this day forward.

seriously bad luck Joe !!

I will try asking my Subaru agent here for a price. All I can say is it's a good thing you had a spare trans kicking about.

The paint will fix but the damage will be there for a while, if you know what I mean...........

Phil.

Thanks James and Ron.

I do feel a little like as if bad luck came looking for me. Maybe I have now absorbed my share, and the future will pick up. I shall presume so until proven otherwise!!:)

Keep you informed.

Appreciate if you could.

Possibly by Friday I will be back on road, box working better than it ever did, and only the bootlid to fix. With any luck.

Say Hi! to Angie from me,

Cheers

Joe:)

Joe, sorry to hear of your bad luck and glad no one was hurt.

Hopefully you can use this event to get your car in better shape than it was.

Will keep you all posted as I make progress. Pat reckons he will have it in shape to go back in the car this evening.

If I may, in homage, to your screen name, say, "That which does not kill me . . ." :D

Hang in there, time wounds all heels. :D:D:D:D

Sorry to here about your troubles, Joe. Unfortunately my 'puter thew a wobbly and I have not been on line for some time. I could not resist it any longer so sneaked off from work for a session at an internet cafe.

I will see what I can find out about gearboxes and get back to you.

I knew that you should have bought the car I told you about ;)

I am just glad that I live in a low crime area, even so I still had a load of tools stolen a month ago.

Best wishes

ICBP is back on the road again today.

The second failure was the pump.

I am being very wary of it now. Listen to every squeek, rattle or thump. Fearing the worst.

However, if it continues to behave, I may be in better shape next week.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks Todd.

I do hope so. Without being mechanically paranoid, I feel I am due an uninterrupted trouble-free run anytime soon. I have spent quite a bit of money recently trying to ensure this is so.

This has been my philosophy each time I've picked it up from the shop. I'd take it easy for a little while, being wary, paranoid . . . call it what you will. But, as confidence increased, so did the need to turn her loose to do what she was made to do. I've had to live with the renewed philosophy of "if she's gonna break, she's gonna break and I'll just have to fix 'er." Just keep the shiny side up and you'll be okay, Joe. Let 'er rip. :D

Todd

There's times it can be bent, and times it can't be bent, know what I mean??:)

It all depends on how careful you are with the tie-down ropes.

Phil will expand on that for you:D :D

And yes, painful either way.

If I thought the tranny was not going to give me 40K miles service at this point, I might put her on the market, and buy something sensible. Like a Maserati or a Ferrari.

However, I like that "flying at ground level" feeling so much, I will persevere. At least as long as my missus tolerates the drain on the bank!:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, doesn't the word "bent" mean something totally different on your side of the pond? :D

(This, of course, coming from someone named "Randy." We won't even bothering adding "Johnson" to the list.:D)

When a large gentlemen with a lorry and a winch pulls on it, it bends - and snaps in half!:eek::eek:

We won't go into that. Phil and I are having a technical discussion here, no need to lower the tone [any lower than we already lowered it:) :) ]

As for allusions to your name, I'll reserve judgement till I can check with Shari if it's deserved or earned.;)

Hi Joe,

I am quite sure you are not bent . As it is Friday 13 and as I was born on a thirteenth I take this opportunity of wishing you the best of luck and may all the gremlins go to hell. I very nearly typed " go down under " to be nice and correct, then realized this was one hell of a blue !

Special regards, Trevor. *<)

Hello Trevor

Well now if you were born on the 13th, then it can't be all that unlucky, can it?

Thanks for the good wishes. The same to you mate, and as for the gremlins, we will just :) them away!

My car is running well now except for one strangeness which it used to do before. If I accelerate powerfully away from a right turn junction, it seems to slip as it makes the change up to 2. Has done this once on a tight roundabout also. A bit bothered by it, as the slippage can only do harm.

I thought perhaps of the oil level, and fluid possibly missing the pump scavenger, but why would that not happen on left turns also??

Any ideas??

Joe:)

You could be on the right track. The pick up may not be central and therefore only one side is effected but this does seem strange. Shoot Harvey a PM as he appears to have done a lot of study regarding the transmission set up and knows what he is talking about.

Joe:)

My wife and I were married on the 13th and our wedding anniversary occasionallly falls on a Friday, as I'm sure Trevor's birthday does. That was 26 years ago (working on 27).

With those two evidences, the history books should change to erase this silly superstition. :D:D:D

The cheapest gearbox I could find, except it comes with a few extras.
