Way cool! I have been toying with the idea lately to request Moog and Marty do something on the SVX. They used one in their decal commercial and Marty has to love the SVX.. but I suspect he's kept it as a trump towards Moog..

Which begs the question... were you also the hard hitting owner in the commercial? :)

I came upon MCM while doing research on Forester (which turns out to be too small for a family car) and I think they're great. Of course it has struck me that SVX is not necessarily a very mod friendly car except for some suspension tuning.

I think the title should read "The project that could have undone Subaru, and almost did!"

plain text article:
SVX feature ( title?)
Subaru in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s were known for making cheap small and medium cars often driven by university lecturers wearing tweed jackets with leather elbow patches. In 1991 this idea was given a pretty big shake up with the introduction of the Liberty RS (follow the build of Marty’s RS throughout seasons 2 and 3) and not even a year later they took it one step further and threw convention out the window with the SVX.
The SVX was Subaru’s First and only real attempt to build a grand touring coupe. Though it was a sales flop, selling only 250 cars from 1992-1995 when Subaru Australia pulled the pin on the SVX project (although the SVX continued on in Japan and the USA until 1997). The SVX featured futuristic styling penned by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro who’s other creations include the Delorean DMC-12 and Lancia Delta. The unique styling included a window within a window not dis similar to the Delorean , while on the inside the dash was sculpted with a wraparound dash facia reminiscent of 80’s aircraft.
This particular SVX however stands out, being one of only a few of the Australian models which have been modified. This SVX hasn’t had much left as Subaru intended, many parts have been swapped for JDM spec Alcyone parts , items from other Subaru models or custom made aftermarket parts.
The engine, transmission and diff have all been changed also, the engine lifter from a 1997 JDM Alcyone a pretty straight forward swap. The transmission and diff however weren’t as easy. Not content with the auto only factory spec a 5 speed transmission was sourced from a 1998 Australian spec WRX, the same WRX also donated the diff gear set which were fitted into the SVX’s original diff housing. The tail shaft, transmission cross member, clutch mechanism and shifter linkages were all made, either from scratch or modified parts from other Subaru models. Aftermarket parts are also scattered throughout the car including a GFB short shift kit (www.gfb.com.au), BBS 18x9 wheels, custom made Selex coil over suspension and a stereo centred around a high end Eclipse head unit.
The genuine JDM parts are literally everywhere, the whole exterior has been changed to JDM spec, including the front grille, bonnet badge , rear light panel and the tail lights. The interior has also been treated to some Japanese parts including the dash cluster and other custom touches include the STi gear shift surround and the Momo steering wheel, originally fitted to a 2003 Legacy GTB E Tune. The switches on the steering wheel originally meant for transmission gear shifting have been reconfigured to operate the cruise control with full factory function retained.
While the engine is internally stock, the JDM engine does not Run EGR and paired with the original JDM ecu is a pretty potent package when paired with a manual transmission. Also unleashing a few more Kw is a free flowing exhaust, only containing the original Catalytic converters and one resonator. Once the exhaust gasses pass the rear of the gearbox its smooth sailing all the way to the back of the car, although visually it appears stock the exhaust note isn’t quickly forgotten.

Spec list:

Vehicle : 1992 Subaru SVX
Engine spec: 3.3l flat 6
Transmission : 98 WRX 5 speed manual , GFB 5 speed short shift kit
