I would be saving if I were you a 5 speed for under $3,000 and only a few 100 miles away . interior in good condition and with wheels and body not to bad . White is the showiest of all SVX . If you are looking to buy an SVX with less than $2,000 in your pocket you will not be getting much. Buy from a member.

If you end up finding a good deal on one that ends up having tan interior. I have a full tan interior we could work out some type of arrangement on. I'll be out on the east coast again the end of August and stopping through wouldn't be a problem I'm sure. Just another thought for you if that truly becomes a hang up.:)

That would be tan interior in a red one I think. Don't look for one too cheap $1,500 and needs bearings is a $2,200 car if that is all it needs and it is Auto. LET it SNOW has a stick and running . Pay a few $$$ more and get something worth working on , these cars are not cheap to fix. Bearings could run you a few 100.

one shows up WITH a killer Ground Control suspension.
Momo steering wheel,
low milage,
phenolic spacers,
Group N engine mounts,
stainless steel brake lines,

and you want to think about it?!

Why the Gray interior is so important. I think the tan is nicer > never owned one but it looks more dramatic, Swapping interior would be a job it has been been done before . It means rugs , dash ,door panels, rear seat and package shelf, console and head liner. Doing it right it would even involve the steering wheel. $200.00 hummmm. 5 speed swap will take you 5 years to save up for . $4,000. Getting an SVX that is in nice shape & needs hardly any work is about $4,000. Or you could get one in ruff shape that needs a lot of work for $1,000 and spend $3,000 on it.
I have one sitting in my yard. Pure stock White pearl (Grey interior.) It needs some body works, typical rust spots.Needs an antenna ( radio works fine ) Needs a new driver seat, rest of interior is good. Sun visors have the droops, Needs tires rims are in great shape.need work on rear shocks 9got a bad squeak. Motor and tranny less than 80,000 miles. Runs very strong Needs a new CAT can get it fixed for about $400.00. Power locks work but only with key or levers, Has new brakes all around and front CVT shafts, all PS lines have been replace New "O" rings in pump and new gas line (tank to motor) going to need a new timing belt. All yours for $1,500. To fix everything will cost you about another $2,000-$2,500 if you do most of it yourself.

Hell, I'll give you mine for $800. It has a perfect body, great gray interior, and once it has a new radiator (installing as soon as it arrives) and an intake manifold gasket, it's ready for the road.

Sounds like a deal to me . Drive it home . It will be the thrill of your life on the open Flat lands of Kansas . Been there done that in my SVX. You got 2 people ( not mine) practically giving you cars that need little work. These are people that know these cars. You buy it from a private party on ebay or classifieds that just bought it and drove ityour gona get stuck .

I bought my S8 in Utah and drove it home. It was a fantastic experience, and I was able to really test out the car on the longest straight stretch of I80 in Nebraska!

It can be quite fun to take your time and make stops along the way! You'll have a blast! There is so much more that you see when driving from place to place than when you just fly somewhere for a vacation.

i wouldn't travel alone, also costs of food, drinks ect....

Too bad you're not looking in a higher price range, else I'd consider letting mine go.

'92 Dark Teal LS-L, gray interior.
143K
STi BBS wheels
Just finished the 4.44 swap.
Recently had the engine removed, and resealed, timing belt done, misc sensors, and all hoses replaced.
No rust (southern car), though it does have the dings associated with a car of this age.
Could still use bushings and suspension work (my next steps), but mechanically she should be buttoned up for some time to come.

Ah well, guess I'll just keep it, keep fixing it up, and eventually track it :D

Good news and BAD news
The transmission will never make it to 150,000 miles ( 92 was the worse tranny) Really surprised it still works at 125,000
More bad news did he have the timing belt changed in the past 5years or 50,000 miles .( if not it needs changing and so does the water pump.) Better learn how . $500+ at the dealer .
Good news it you can drive your own SVX for a month or two.

Be prepared to replace the trans. Replacing one yourself isn't so hard, just make sure you gather enough cash and keep it on hand just in case.

Let's not forget that Letitsnow's 92 has a slipping clutch and rust. So as good as a bargain as it is, it is not a perfect car either and would require some immediate work.

Personally I'd buy a 92 with 125K, but I would also figure on replacing the transmission sometime down the road, (probably within 3 years) and definitely with a 4.44.

According to a recent poll taken on this site 100,00 seems to be a good drop off point on the 92 . No pun intended ....True once a clutch slips it is toast , they don't heal . slipping clutch aint hard to change . And he said something way back about body work no problem ( I think something like that ) . We have not seen the body work on the black one or the interior . how is your timing belt LETIT SNOW

IIRC, it looked good when I installed the engine, so I didn't change it. There's not much wear on it from when I got it... The engine finished fall, slept for the winter, and got me around just until I got the Silver.

From what I understand the 92 has no filter. Adding a cooler and external filter would be a good idea. Here you go spending more on it then you did to buy it .

Is it possible to go see it without money . Pictures can lie . I would not get hopes up until I sat in it. I looked at a lot of cars over the years that looked mint in pictures ( not only SVX. ) One in particular was a red SVX not far from here . It should have been a parts car. And even then not many usable ones. How far is it ? $20.00 worth of gas will make or break the deal . Do it.

Please go look at the car before you get your heart set on it.
I don't think you should buy a used car on the first trip anymore than you should from a dealer.
Take a bunch pics while your there, look for flaws, use them to help negotiate the price down over the phone later.

Them camera phone pics you posted don't show anything.

Some the interior pics you posted look ok, but they are of the wrong things.
Pics of the backseats.. no one uses the back seats, so they are usually all mint looking. How about a pic of the driver seat instead?
Pic of the window controller... how about a pic of interior doors handles alcantara instead, you know like were it might get worn and dirty from 19 years of use.

Pic of shifter area, um, all those lines should line up and the sides should not be pulled out like that.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd295/Jawnz_Subarus/shifter.jpg
It should be more like this:
http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad73/Lookin4SVX/lighterarea.jpg

That engine bay pic is kinda scary. The only 2 clean spots I see are the oil dipstick and the oil fill.
Makes me wonder if it has oil leak, then again maybe he just changed the oil recently.

You cant really tell what the paint is like from a pic...
Let me show you, here is a pic of my car:

So he said it has some rust and dents.
Fixing a small rust spot on my rear wheel well on my impreza cost $700.
Not sure what body shops charge in PA, but a little rust is not necessarily cheap to fix..
If it has rust on the paint, what might the underside looks like?

125,000 on stock tranny is not a good thing, I agree bank up your money for the 4.44 swap that will be in your near future.
My 92 had its tranny done at 75,000 (receipts from previous owner). It is now at 198,000 and its starting to flair in 2nd sometimes at low rpm.

I am not trying to discourage you from buying an SVX, I just want you to go into know that this will not be a cheap car, specially if you buy a cheap one.
I knew going into it that I was going to kill this tranny when I bought the car, so I have my 4.44 money in an envelope.
I have spent over 1k on replacing brake calipers, new ball joints, new tierod ends, and a set valve cover gaskets.
I still have do the struts and mounts, but OEM struts are rumored to be shot from sitting on the shelf for 18 years.
So I decided to go with the custom koni inserts and new springs, which are not exactly cheap and I'm still saving for...

All in all I expect it to run me about $4,500 total in mechanical.
I already spent $1,000 on the wheels and tires..
And I want to spend like another $4,000 for new paint.
So its lookin like my $2,500 svx will in the cost me $12,000 in total.

$12k might seem like a lot, but I would rather be driving a 1992 SVX that cost me $12k, than a 2011 kia rio or ford fiesta that cost 12k.

if its in worse shape than i think. i wont buy it.

$700 for dent repair ?!
less than $50 and i do it my self.

all repairs will be done by me and my father. I'm not like most pansies and go to a shop every time it needs fixed. i have never taken any of my Subaru to a garage to have it repaired. exception for frame straightening i have to take my XT6 to a repair shop for that.

i have done trans changes, never a swap from auto to man but that's a hole new chapter I'm willing to get into and I'm waiting for a car really worth converting to 5 speed, BINGO! the SVX.

I've been told a million times already about the trans issue, i know i know i know. what more i need to say ?

till that can be done i'll take it easy on the trans.

when it comes to pictures i'm not that stupid. i have bought many subarus threw pictures and always end up worse than they look in the picture.
