View Full Version : New Gauges Feeler

Obviously this is a project that will take place once the Cold Air Intakes are tested and on the shelves, however I've already designed a new set of gauges and had them approved, and all that it's waiting on is the cash, the new gauge sets would be a complete replacement for the stock unit, not just faces a complete replacement. They would have the cool sweeping motion on startup that the legacy gt's have. here is a video, 1kTt02d6Pm4
The youtube attachment is being retarded so if it doesn't work here is the video http://youtu.be/1kTt02d6Pm4

Here is a rough sketch of what I'm thinking
Manual Gauges

Auto Gauges
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=15253&stc=1&d=1305515902

Also they would be able to have a color choice available.
Basically what I'm thinking is that the left knob would switch colors on the gauges and that the background of the numbers and tacs on the gauges be lit white and that all the red surrounds and the needles be what would be able to change colors between red, blue, green, or white.

Here is a set that the company has done for the Escalade
http://www.usspeedo.com/images/products/121216214723261.jpg

Price would be $275 and would be a plug and play replacement.

Looks good but if we would be doing an entirely different setup, why not go with something a bit more up to date, like the one for the Escalade ? We could also add some additional guages while we're at it, right?

only issue you run into is having every other gauge that you add getting the info needed to work, it can be done. Anything can be done, however if you add more info to display it will need an additional input, if you've ever taken apart your gauges on the SVX you'll know that there are two plugs in the back that basically give the gauge setup everything it needs to display. If we want to add oil temp oil pressure etc, it would no longer be plug and play and it would require additional wiring.

Okay, instead of hacking it up and adding extra things to the display, how about adding chrome and stuff like the Escalade then?

Chrome surrounds and all that can be done as well, only issue is for each design I do I need to be able have about 10 made, so if we can get a good amount of interest in one or another then we can do whatever you guys want. Anyone else have any ideas??

My 2 cents is that paying $275 for a sweeping motion on start up is probably not the best investment of $$ in light of everything that tends to be going on with our collective SVXi ;)

Now, replace the idiot gauges with accurate read out gauges and you've got something

^^ This. More than dress-up, the SVX really needs functional bits. Surely, do what you like with TruSpeed, but your returns will be on volume before obscure glitz.

The idea wasn't just to add sweeping gauges, it was to improve visability of the gauges removing the old school dull bulbs with dim spots and replacing them with the choice of color and a lot clearer read out. Like I said before more gauges can be added, however as has been told to me a million times a lot of SVXers are scared to do their own wiring or drilling into the car etc, therefor a plug and play option is something that I was going for.

We can replace the left car image with a functioning gauge I/E oil pressure, temp. etc. etc.

Front adjustable LCA's are being drawn up, high flow fuel rails, and a few other things, don't worry, I plan to throw a ton of products out this year. Most the other things are not public yet.

Gonna pretend I didn't even see this thread till there's a shiny new intake under my hood...

Seriously though, a new gauge cluster is a good idea, but surely an oil pressure gauge wouldn't be that hard, and at the mileage we're all at, we could all use one. Better backlighting and the sweeping needle thing is a good start though.

What does the little car circle on the left do anyway?

I'd be in for a set. I love the start-up sweep of newer cars and I've honestly been wondering how that could be added to the SVX for a couple years. If no new gauges are added I would probably incorporate a pair of Defi's into mine.

The AT Temp light is in that circle. I'd love to see a real AT Temp gauge replace that (but retain the light for us OBDIIs to read trouble codes).

Ah, well then that should definitely be a gauge on the M/T version ;). Since there's no A/T to have a temp anymore anyway.

What about the one on the right? Just whether any doors are open?

Open doors and the seatbelt light I believe. Also fairly useless.

The door open thing's not useless, but I think it could easily be relocated to somewhere not as useful. The seatbelt one, it's not like a light is going to change anyone's decision about that.

+1 on the CAIs already! Additionally:

Function > form. I could care less about sweeping gauges, AT temperature, chrome, or any of that Pep Boys nonsense.

Give me an ACCURATE water temp gauge (Not the standard OEM 3 position gauge), Oil pressure and temp gauges, oh, and maybe a DCCD readout in place of the AT gear display.

Barring that, convince an aftermarket gauge manufacturer to create a run of said gauges that match the OEM SVX display, ala Omori for the WRX crowd.

I'm on bender number 4 for the CAI's I should have a prototype in steel here in the next little bit, I had to ship out our prototype to Wyoming this time. He's working hard on them, We're his number 1 priority unlike the a$$hole$ I dealt with before these guys. I want the CAI more than you guys, believe me... I've been dreaming it for a couple years before fabing one. lol These are another thing I've been working on along with other projects in the fire, incl. turbo kit, 5speed kits, fuel rails, adjustable lower control arms, and a few other ideas... wanna help call the SBA and tell them to give me some money already! I do have a new welder and a few other toys to do some more custom stuff here.

I don't mean to give you so much crap about taking long, but it has been a while. I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. :)

What is the SBA? I don't get it.

One thing that I think you should note is that LAN is going to stop making/selling mechanical parts (cams, pistons, etc) soon, so there will be an unmet (if limited) demand for those things. I would start trying to line up a source for that type of thing too. Lower CR pistons especially.

Also, you should make some wiring adapters for keeping cruise and such for M/T swaps so it's more plug and play. There's not a lot to it, but it would make for a more complete M/T swap kit.

It's understandable I don't blame ya, it sucks just as bad for me! :)

What is the SBA? I don't get it. Small Business Association, they are loaning us money for the business via wellsfargo it's a government thing

But back to the topic.... I agree with the idea for tranny temp gauge, I'll talk to them and see how hard it would be to change the on off signal into something readable.
