The Next Car Thread (http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=57064) and a recent poll on Jalopnik (http://ca.jalopnik.com/5790459/how-many-cars-have-you-owned) have me thinking. I'd love to hear from guys like Mike and Jerry who've owned hundreds and I'm curious how many are driving their first car (I wish I got an SVX for my first car ;)). This being an enthusiast's site, I imagine there will be a lot of great cars in this thread. It'll be interesting to see what brought you to the SVX. Was it a history with Subaru, like me, or do you love Italdesign and drove a Scirocco prior to this?
My first car was a 1973 International Scout II with a 345 V8 and some substantial off road modifications. My Dad had built it when I was a kid. When he moved he gave it to a friend for "safe keeping" until I turned 16. It was hardly road-worthy by the time I got it, so aside from tooling around the trails near my house I didn't get to drive it much. My Mom owned a '87 GL wagon and a '92 Justy so I used those to get to town. I sold it after 6 months to buy something a little more drivable, and I still owe my Dad a built Scout someday.
This is one of my first black and white prints.

With the proceeds of the sale I bought a 1987 GL-10 Turbo sedan (FWD). My first Subaru, although I'd grown up in them. I drove it out to California with all my worldly possessions in it and it served me very well at the start of college. At about 210K miles it blew a head gasket and I sold it to the mechanic at the local Subaru dealership for $1000.
The only photo of my GL-10 known to exist. My sister took this the day I got it home. No laughing at 16 year old Kit.

That's when I picked up the ill fated 1979 Volvo 242 GT. It was a blast to drive. So I did. A lot. In two months I'd put over 4 thousand miles on it with my 50 mile a day commute and 3 road trips. It overheated two miles from my house and I decided to keep running her all the way there. It never started again. I had big plans to install a new motor with IPD goodies on it but with no money and no facilities it sat outside my apartment for six months. I walked. A lot. Finally it got towed to the impound. I didn't want to pay $250 to get a dead car out of hock, so I ended up giving them the title and they sold it to the county fair. I sat on the hill the night it was run over by monster trucks, listening to the roar from the distance. I was sad. A lot. That Volvo made it to Valhalla.
Again, the only photo ever recorded. This was at Marin County Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate.

I spent a couple months searching for an XT. A 1987 XT Turbo 5-speed popped up 400 miles from me so logically I rented a car and drove out with a friend to pick it up, sight unseen. It was a mess, and even though I still had time to back out of the deal I bought the thing anyway. The previous owner had a stack of paperwork from various auctions in various states instead of a title, the tags were from Oregon and two years expired, and it lurched really bad under heavy acceleration. At the time I fancied myself an undiscovered Petter Soldberg and went out "rallying" every weekend. It managed to survive the end of college, although the air-ride collapsed and I'd broken five axles over a year and a half. I moved back to Colorado with it and commuted a 20 mile canyon in it for a year. With the flat suspension I could drift it by flicking my wrist. Tires were cheep and expendable. I remember it breaking 200K miles sometime before the fuel pump died one night in the middle of nowhere and I just took everything out of it and left it there. It sat there with its four year old out-of-state tags for about a month then disappeared. I never heard from it again. Not my most responsible era.
This car was heavily photographed. This was it's natural habitat.

I bought a 1992 Legacy L sedan in "geezer-pleaser gold" for a whoppin $3400, the most I've ever paid for a car. That thing was a tank. None of my normal car abuse would even faze it and it ran for 4 years with nothing more than oil changes, brake pads, and the occasional axle (it is a Subaru after all). In the time I owned it I went from mountain commuting daily in Colorado to a sedate commute through LA traffic and it excelled at both. In it's life it saw dirt roads in eleven states. At 225K miles some little things started going bad and I wanted to upgrade. It did one more crazy road-trip/rally for old time's sake and the radiator cracked on a jump. It leaked slowly but got me home 350 miles that night, stopping to refill the water every twenty minutes. I tried selling it on Craigslist for a while but there were no takers, so eventually it went to Pick-a-part although it still drove when they came to pick it up. What can I say, I was distracted by my new car.
Here it is stretching it's legs in the High Sierra.

1992 Subaru SVX. Coming up on three years of ownership and over 215K miles, it's the first car I've ever babied. It turns twenty years old some time this month. I should get it something special.
I've posted a lot of pics of this car here, but I just can't help it.

My post was a bit long winded, but I had fun trying to recollect them all. Let's hear what you've driven, even if it's just a headcount.

Many of my cars were EITHER mine or my wife's (whichever wife that was LOL) but I drove them enough that I can give some comments... OK, in order;
1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle. Was a terrible car that vibrated horrendously at anything over 45 miles an hour, but carried me and my friend to Dublin quite frequently on a drinking binge... then carried me and all of my worldly possessions to a new home in London. Sold it because I started a job that provided me a car which was a...
1990 Ford Mondeo Diesel Hatchback. Not much to say about this... it was a company car so it was... meh. Then I upped and move to the lovely US of A and got;
1972 Dodge Charger with a 392 Hemi that occasionally blew flames out the exhaust pipe. Occasionally had to stop to reattach bits with duct tape and/or wire. Finally got shot of it when I started it one morning and the muffler exploded. Decided then it was time to move on to...
1990 Ford Probe. Yeah, it looked as bad as it sounds... and it didn't last long. Three months because it had LOADS of problems... thankfully the dealer had given me a 90 day money-back guarantee which led me to;
1992 Subaru Loyale. It was what I could afford, and despite being slower than molasses, got me to work and back with a lot less drama than the Charger. I had actually purchased this for my wife, but drove it for a bit until I got a;
1993 Pontiac Grand Am V6. I think it was the only year they put the 3.3L V6 in it; the next year they went to a 3.1 that made more horsepower but seemed slower. After carting much of my crap from Oklahoma to St. Louis via a 3 month stopover in Lake of the Ozarks, I traded this for...
1995 Subaru SVX L. Tada! My first SVX, second Subaru. Yeah, the start of the horrors ;)
1996 Subaru Outback. After the Loyale gave its life for my wife, we got the Outback because she had walked away from being t-boned by a Ford F-150. She owned this car for another decade, holding the damned thing together with prayer I think... meanwhile we got divorced.
1996 Saab 900 Turbo. After my SVX had been wrecked by the shop that was supposed to be doing an alignment, the car was fixed but never felt the same. Rather than continually fight to get it fixed right, I got rid of it for my Saab. Loved that car; hauled just about everything I owned from my last apartment to my first house, got great gas mileage but burned out ignition modules about every six months (so it seemed). I ended up giving this to my second wife while I got myself;
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. My first NEW car I ever owned, and it was a great car. I would probably still have it had my (now ex) wife not hated it so much. Traded it for;
1994 Subaru SVX LSi. Pearlie... my favourite LOOKING SVX I ever owned, and one I think Halistan has a picture of somewhere. Still, it was problematic as hell and just drove me crazy. Meanwhile my financial situation worsened. Then my wife wrecked the Saab which led me to;
1996 Chrysler Town and Country LXi. Actually this wasn't half bad, and I actually enjoyed driving it. Hauled a lot of stuff and drove really nice for a minivan. The interior was also nice with the second row Captain's chairs and third row bench. With two kids and a dog, this was a pretty practical vehicle. Again though, finances worsened (my own business went under) so I sold the SVX and bought;
1993 Ford Escort LX sedan. The only saving grace of this car was the 5 speed. Oh and the fact that I paid $1200 for it. It was transport... got me from A to B with minimal fuss and bother except for air conditioning that leaked badly (half-assed R134 conversion kept it functional with frequent top-ups). Paint peeled off the car in large pieces but the car still ran at 186,000 miles when I sold it to a local farmer. Last I heard the odometer stopped working just over 200,000 miles and he's still driving it.
1999 Acura TL. God that car was good. Front-wheel drive, but powerful engine and really poised suspension. The interior was also gorgeous, and the GPS was quite amusing during a thunderstorm when it often claimed I was somewhere in Ohio. I purchased this after my wife wrecked the Chrysler. Hmm... detecting a pattern here. I only stopped driving it when I gave it to my wife (she'd been driving the Ford) 'cos I got;
1996 Subaru SVX LSi. I loved this car from the get-go. I flew to New Jersey with Halistan to get this car and the two of us drove it back to St. Louis. Well, I drove and he kept me company. However, it became electrically odd... had all kinds of Check Engine lights I could never seem to diagnose or fix, even after spending a fortune on sensors and parts. Finally got parked for a year when it couldn't pass Missouri emissions.
2000 Chevy Venture. Yeah, not much to say about it because it was always just there. I didn't like driving it at all. I was also never happy that my wife traded the Acura for it. Yeah, don't get me started. Finally sold it to a friend of mine in Oklahoma.
2001 Volvo S60. Yeah, not as fun as the SVX but it was a comfy and reliable car for puttering around town on business. It handled pretty decently for a front-wheel drive sedan with very little power. I got it to replace the SVX while it was parked, and it was good reliable transportation. My (now ex) wife still has the car, but she's let it go to crap by not maintaining it. I think the cooling system blew out and she overheated it... who knows? Either way she trashed the interior, too.
2001 BMW 330i. Five speed... fantastic car. I got rid of the SVX after it had been repaired mostly because this little silver Bimmer just caught my eye. It was truly a blast to drive and own, despite blowing out a head gasket while driving home from Chicago after flying back from Belfast from my grandmother's funeral. It was in the shop for 6 weeks while they rebuilt the top end of the engine. I sold it almost exactly a year ago because I was going to do a European Delivery on a new BMW. That's a whole 'nother story but led me to;
2004 BMW 545i. The car I drive now. Loaded up with iDrive, Premium, Cold Weather and Sport packages... so it's got adaptive suspension, adaptive headlights, sport wheels, a 6 speed and a really stupidly powerful engine. Still, as of this morning I think I might've just sold it which will leave me with my current...
1996 Subaru SVX LSi. Currently my girlfriend's brother is driving it because I'd rather it get some use than sit around waiting for me to get shot of the Bimmer. His CRX currently has no engine in it... well it does but it's not attached to anything yet. He's been rebuilding it for months... I should be getting Saffron back sometime next week 'cos he now has another car to drive around in.
As well as this, there have been a couple of motorbikes in this lot, too; a 1992 Kawasaki Ninja 250, a 1992 Honda Nighthawk 750, a 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 and a 2004 BMW R1150GS. I might also be getting shot of the GS and buying a new Connie... stay tuned :)
Beyond all this there have also been some other cars I've driven for a time but not owned. Ford Explorers, and even my girlfriend's Jaguar X-Type (which is a far more fun car than it's given credit for sometimes). Still, I'm sure this list is FAR from finished for me :D

1996 Acura 3.5RL: 3rd owner, handmedown from my dad's father, who then handed the car down to me when he got his dad's LS430 (which I want to own when his father stops driving his LS460). Hated the car at first, but as I drove it everywhere in highschool, I grew to love it's ride, and it's power. FWD but it handled great. Drove it the Kern River more than once for rafting, hauled bicycles with it, and pretty much all over california. Crashed it on the way to school one morning. Took a canyon road short cut too fast and wound up on top of a guard rail next to a cliff. Trashed the subframe, engine, oil pan, axles, and transmission housing. left it with the insurance company and still went to school with a possible concussion, idk, everything passed very slowly and weird.
1973 Opel GT: Mother's father's car, it seemed to be plagued with gremlins, various electrical problems throughout it's life, brake cable failure which caused a fender bender. Headgasket failure finally sidelined the car around 1981, and I coveted it since I was a little kid. Waiting on getting the cash together to put it together with toyota running gear from a mid '80's corolla.
1992 SVX LSL: first truly owned car, paid $2000 for it from a fat guy in syracuse. Said he couldn't fit in it anymore and wanted cash to pay off a 90's escalade. Got a free set of rims out of it. Drove it with minor mechanical problems until december, when I left it at a local repairshop (dodge/chrysler/jeep). They left it out in the snow for 4 weeks, killed the battery, and never did a bit of work on it. Picked it up and didn't pay anything for it. The motor spun a bearing in february and the rest is history here, nearly finished with the swap and new parts.

My list is kinda short; I am kinda young.
1996 Altima, maroon. Hand-me-down from my dad. Fender bender and totaled by insurance. A beater basically, like most first cars.
2006 Sentra SE-R, black. Totaled. A surprisingly quick little car.
1992 SVX, pearl white w/ black roof. Wrecked and stripped for parts. First car I loved and I was broken hearted when she died.
Current:
1994 SVX, blue. 6-speed makes for a more fun driving experience than a stock SVX.
1997 SVX, black. This one feels really together compared to my blue one.
Also my wife has a 2008 lancer GTS, aqua (greenish blue). Could be faster. My wife gets great gas mileage when she drives it, but I don't. It's CVT, which I still really don't like. Really pretty car though. It handles very, very well for a sedan.

Jeez some of you guys have quite a history with cars.
First car purchased in University after I sold my
1) Honda 350 motorcyle. Sold it to buy my dream car a
2 1972 Datsun 240Z. I absolutely loved this car. Replaced both front fenders, rockers and had to paint it ever couple years to hide the rust but it was a great car... I still love those 240Zs. The 240Z was my summer car and my winter beater was a
3) 1971 Datsun 510. Loved that car too.
4) I eventually sold the 510 and bought a piece of crap Mustang. Maybe a 1974 or something like that. That car didn't last long before I scrapped it with a blown tranny.
5) Got married and bought a Dodge Aries. Basic car. Not fun to drive but I got 10 years out of it before selling it.
6) A couple years with a Ford Taurus I bought from my father-in-law. Another piece of crap.
7) Had a kid and thought I needed a van so I bought a 1992 Ford Aerostar. It was ok for a year or two. Useless in the snow. Even an inch of snow made this thing dangerous to drive... That was enough for me so for the first time in my life I traded a vehicle in to buy my first
8) 1996 Subaru Legacy. Absolutely loved this car. A few years later we bought a second
9) 1997 Subaru legacy for my wife. We still have this car. It's now a daily driver for my 21-year-old daughter. The car is rusting badly but still drives like it is new.
10) I eventually sold my 1996 Legacy to buy a
11) 1994 Subaru SVX which I still own and drive as a daily driver during the winter months. I absolutely love the SVX. Most comfortable car I've ever driven.
12) Meanwhile, we bought a 2001 Legacy GT as my wife's and our family's main car. Love this car too.
13) A few years ago I decided to relive my youth and picked up a beautiful 1981 Datsun 280zx turbo. I like this car lots and only drive it in the summer.
That's it for me. Right now we have four cars on the go
a 97 legacy wagon, 2001 Legacy GT, my 94 SVX and my 81 Datsun 280zx.
I think we are nearing a new vehicle and my research is leaning toward an H6 LLBean Outback.

I am going to leave out the ones that I have bought for my wife and only include the ones that were my drivers.
1978 Dodge Aspen - Most hated car I have ever owned.
1984 Chevy Celebrity - Hated this car too.
1983 Honda Civic - Really loved this car, kept till it started smoking real bad.
1988 Chevy Spectrum - Awful POS Car, only kept it for 3 months.
1986 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo - Turbo or not it still looked like Colt, hated it.
1992 Ford Probe LX- Loved this car, and I miss this car. Great vehicle. WISH I NEVER SOLD IT.
1992 Ford Escort - Surprisingly good car. A hand me down from my wife.
1999 Toyota Camry - Talk about bland, I have no idea what I was thinking when I bought this?
1995 SVX Lsi -Was looking for a Outback when I saw this. Sold when repair bills got too high.
2005 Mazda 6 -It's a great car, my current daily driver
1992 SVX LSL - Regretted selling my 95, decided to pick this one up.

Wow. I feel under-motivated.
I drove my parent's 81 Monte Carlo for a year,
Bought an 88 Mustang 4-cylinder LX with my own money in high school, through more than half of college, until the trans died the second time... and unloaded it.
Bought a 93 Probe GT V6 in college, until I got married.
Traded the Probe for a 2000 Ranger 4x4 XLT when we were moving around.
Sold the Ranger when I bought my current 2005 Legacy GT Limited, back in 2007.
Bought the SVX a while later as a second driver, and to keep the SVX from being crushed.
The only other car is my wife's 99 Miata that she bought in late 2001 before we got married, and still drives.
Not a lot of cars in the last 18 years or so...

I figured this would be a re-post. I tried to search, but there's no way I would have gone back 9 years.:lol:
These are some great lists. Lots of really cool cars here (Brougham Baby!), and some interesting overlaps (another '79 242GT owner, lots of Subarus and two Opels!). I updated my first post with a pic of each, so go check them out here (https://picasaweb.google.com/Kit.Whittenburg/OldCars#). Keep 'em coming, this is fun.

The ones that made the biggest 'impact' are the ones that I drive now, and a few from my history.
I still have the 61 Ford ragtop that I drove as an 18 year old. (40 years ago), I still have the 47 Dodge truck that I 'dated' my wife of 23 years in, I still have the 65 Plymouth Barracuda that I gave her for our 3rd aniversary.
I still drive the 97 Outback that I bought 8 years ago. Wife still drives the 97 Outback that I bought for her 6 years ago, I still drive the 91 Dodge extended cab that I bought 8 years ago and the GMC that I bought 7 years ago.
Stuff that went away...... 72 Porsche 914, 65 Jag Mk 3 saloon, 1970 Ford PU, 1969 Benz, 220, 63 Buick Riv, 65 Pontiac Tempest, (3) 57 Chevys, a couple 65 Cudas, A 67 Plumouth Sport Fury, a 69 Sport Sattelite, 3 Rambeler Americans, 3 Buick 'specials', Etc, etc, etc!

-1990 Ford Taurus LX Station Wagon 3.8 v6 complete with bumper stickers all over it. Got rid of it after the head gasket blew, those 3.8s where found of that XD.
-1988 Buick Regal Custom 2.8 v6 also full of bumper stickers. This would be my last car to be meet with a bumper stickery fate. Got rid of this after it was turning into a money pit.
-1993 Eagle Vision LSi 3.3 v6. Didn't have it long, tranny died, no surprise there. I really hated those Chrysler autos from the 90s, their open diffs, so many of them failed.
-1991 Geo Prizm this was an alright car had to get rid of it cause the body rotted away XD.
-1987 Chrysler New Yorker Turbo 2.2L I4 Turbo. Really comfy leather seats and the car talked to you... which was cool for like 10 minutes but then got kinda annoying. The voice sounded like a possessed speak and spell. Got rid of this cause it was also turning into a money pit as well.
-1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 v6. Ah, my first reliable car. I bought this with only 60k on it, still own this car. I gave it to my fiance' when I got my SVX. It is a very good car that hasn't given me hardly any problems.
-1992 Subaru SVX LS-L Dark Teal. My current car, I love this car! I wanted this car for over 10 years and I was able to finally buy it from my uncle last year :). Currently has 152,500 miles on it.

3.3 H6, got any pics of that opel? I should have added that to my list but I only had mine a short while. Great little car. K_Dub any pics of your 242gt? I loved mine and did a full restoration, I miss that car so much. I had to abandon it due to family problems. 10 years of work went into it :(
FYI: I once drove from Ocean City, MD, to Dayton, OH, in an Opel GT...
With my buddy, his girlfriend (who owned the car), my 1st Berthe' (1/2 German Shepherd & 1/2 English Sheepdog) & with all our luggage loaded in the dog carrier in which she (Berthe', not the girlfriend) flew to Baltimore!
Three people and a dog in an Opel GT! Never got stopped once! Got more than a couple 2nd looks in the rest stops and gas stations en route, though!:eek:

FYI: I once drove from Ocean City, MD, to Dayton, OH, in an Opel GT...
With my buddy, his girlfriend (who owned the car), my 1st Berthe' (1/2 German Shepherd & 1/2 English Sheepdog) & with all our luggage loaded in the dog carrier in which she (Berthe', not the girlfriend) flew to Baltimore!
Three people and a dog in an Opel GT! Never got stopped once! Got more than a couple 2nd looks in the rest stops and gas stations en route, though!:eek:
Cheers!
when my grandfather drove the car, it was the family car, so 6 people piled into it every sunday lol

lol i feel left out i have only owned 2 cars and im looking down the list some people have like 20 or 30 listed :eek:
I have over 30 today! I didn't feel like typing that long. The 61 Ford ragtop is the one that changed my life way back in 1972. The guys didn't want to hang out with me. I buy a 61 Ford ragtop, in blue paint, the girls did want to hang out!
The BEST $100. I ever spent! (11 year old convertables were only 'valuable' to redneck poor boys back then)
IF the redneck 'poor boy' spent some time with a can of wax, the girls NOTICED!!
Phil rode in it, Spike rode in it, because they were my friends. Dorothy, Lora, Teresa, Linda, etc,etc,etc rode in it because it was BLUE and the top went down! (clearing throat here over and over again.......)

I went to look at a juke for fun and it was a really awesome car. I did not drive it but the inside was nice and the the fact that its turbo'd makes me fond of it.

Nice to see another 16 yr old....
I have only had one car so far, a 1992 SVX LS-L....this car I shal never sell...
On a side note, my parents have had some pretty sweet cars, my favorite is a 1993 Mazda RX-7 Touring that he bought new in 1993. Oh and did I mention it only has 6000 miles on it, and still smells like a new car inside?
