ATF smells terrible!

First, thanks to Seraph for answering my previous questions. I'm very impressed by the technical knowledge on this network.

When I checked the ATF the other day, it was clear and the color looked good. However, it smelled really awful. Is this normal, or a sign of a big problem? The transmission seems to be shifting okay.

I haven't put a cooler on it yet, but that's in the works.

Dick, my gym socks smell "terrible", but this is no indication my feet are about to explode. Does the fluid smell "burned"? Go sniff some new tranny fluid from the container & compare. Your nose may just not like the smell of petroleum products.

If I remember, it did smell pretty bad. However, if you ever get around to changin the gear oil in the dferentials, well, that really reeks. You'll be washing you hands for days.
