where can I get a service manual &/or specs on line to do this job myself gene

1. do an internet search for alldata. last time I looked they give you a year of shop manual access for $24.95.
2. Look for Subaru manuals at something over $150 new.
3. Find somebody selling the popular mechanics CD-ROM (JC Whitney used to). That would provide you a local copy of what Alldata had online circa 1996 (they don't make this product anymore to my knowledge). Cost less than $30.

Alternates:
1. Find a sympathetic garage (maybe a do-it-yourself place if any still exist) that subscribes to Alldata or Mitchell's and see if they will pull the sheets for you. Best of luck here because they're paying for it, so not too likely to give it away.
2. Find your way onto a military base and go to the auto hobby shop. If you do the work there ($3/hr stall rental), they will get the data sheets for you at no charge (at least on an Air Force base) as well as provide tools for free.
