I am enjoying it! That rattle/vibration that seemed like the transmission had issues turned out to be the two bolts that hold the drive line in place. I simply tighten them back up and installed a new exhaust gasket and she runs PERFECT now :)

It was a bit of an inside joke since I bought his SVX so he could buy a sedan for his grandmother to ride in.

Jeremy-

I highly recommend that you inspect the wiring, especially in the engine bay. The 92-95 SLs (especially the sl500) suffer from improperly manufactured wiring throughout the entire car. The plastic coating on the wires breaks down over time and just falls off. The resulting issues can range from unusual electrical issues to electrical fire.

The wiring MAY have been replaced under warranty. If not, it is a $7000-$10,000 repair. If the wiring looks to have the symptoms, DO NOT TOUCH IT! It will only make it worse.

Wow didn't know that the old SL's have this problem. I thought the 2002 series S-class only suffer from this.

Thanks for the advice... havent checked the wiring yet but my front strut mounts are dead and I got a puddle of hydraulic fluid in my lap when I removed the hardtop so im sure the hydraulic rams need to be replaced

Jarrad ... I knew that rattle wasnt anything big it only did it every once in a while and never seemed to affect performance.. im glad you're happy with the car and hope it has a long useful life with you :)

Jeremy-

The fluid is most likely coming from the latches above the windshield. It is very common that they leak.

For all the information you could ever want about the soft top system, see here:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/1307426-r129-soft-top-hydraulic-system-ultimate.html#post2262978

The soft top on mine doesn't work at all, for the record. I've only put it up manually once to see how it looked. Otherwise, i use the hard top, or it sits in my garage with no top at all. :)

I almost went British with a 2002 Jaguar X-type instead of the SL. Everything I read about them was bad... I rarely keep a car more than a year or two but I'd like to be about to DRIVE it while I have it... I love the new (to me) SL, it looks great sitting in my garage :( I ordered the strut mounts today and the mechanic has the hard top clamped back down so i'm good for now

You obviously didn't read between the lines. Only real issue with it is the auto tranny and that is when it isn't cared for properly. The rest of the car is simply bulletproof. Sure there are some cheapout things around like the fuel door and such but not as cheap as some of the parts in a bmw 3 series. Build quality blows Subaru's Indiana plant away.

I know that SL will cost ya plenty! They're fun cars but pricey to keep going.

Tell me about it! I have had to have mine towed 5 times in 2500 miles of ownership! Time to move on!

+1 for the Brit! My TVR only needed a flatbed once and when it got to where it was going it started right up:confused: I hope you have unlimited AAA towing. I'll be quite interested to see what you get next. Aston Martin Vantages seem to be bottoming out. How bout a nice Jensen Interceptor with a Chrysler big block? Alfa Spiders are finally on the rise so a couple year investment in one should net ya a break even ride once everything is considered.
