View Full Version : Reading IV Planning -- Reading, PA 2003

Seraph

I know this is early but all things must start at one time or another by one person or the other. I am not a big planner. I just want Reading to be a little earlier or later than this year on a sunny day. Normally, Reading Meets are held around April if I recall....

So... fill in the rest. I started this one.

Seraph - Lwin.

The Reading SVX meet is always held around Aprils Fool Day.
After all we do own SVXes and why else would the "Reading " Meet be held in Morgantown.

I vote for the Holiday Inn in Denver Pa. Now that we have all these 'youngin' SVXers that live in the Lancaster PA area, I say to them plan Reading IV.

Larry III
PS: IV is not something you take intraveniously. It is the Roman (Latin) numeral for 4. As we used to say in high school, "Latin is a dead language, and it's killing me."

I agree regarding the Holiday Inn in Denver. A much better location, and if I recall, the owner of the hotel has an SVX.

Oh, and I will do what I can to help in planning, but would like some assistance from another area SVXer as I will be starting school in a few weeks.

As one of the "charter members" of the Reading meet, I would not be opposed to making it a week or so later (as some had suggested). My son would also be grateful, since it would take it out of the range of his birthday.

Mike, Nubs, Jake . . . you, know -- Youze guys -- take the torch and run with it. I'm also Okay with Denver (especially since the lowest rate we could get at HI/Morgantown was 79.00 per night, and Denver was offering 49.00).

Holiday Inn Denver for $49/night? That's a steal...

Anyhoo, I'd be glad to pitch in to help organize Reading IV, with the hotels. I've a few connections to travel agents.

I believe randy already has the email address of the owner of the HI in denver. He offered the rates as a specail deal to fellow SVX owners if I remember correctly. I'm sure we can get him to offer those rates again.

Look what I started -- Keep it up boys and girls. We had 40 at Reading III if I counted correctly. We want at least the same number if not more.

So how about shooting for a date where daylight saving time has kicked in & we have a daytime average temperature above 40 degrees! Be careful - upon what date does Easter fall in 2003?

Ron.

Daylight Savings Time arrives in Pennsylvania early in the morning Sunday, April 6, 2003

Easter Sunday is on Sunday, April 20, 2003

April 11-13 is one week later than the traditional "first full weekend in April" date for Reading, (which this year would have been April 4,5,6) and is the weekend prior to the Easter holiday.

For the past two years I had arranged for the hotel contract with the Morgantown Holiday Inn. The Denver Holiday Inn offer showed up late, after we had made arrangements. We thought it would not be fair to the Morgantown HI to cancel reservations and go down the street. We decided to try the Denver HI this year. The owner of the Denver HI has an SVX and authorized his general manager to offer the low rate.

Randy has the letter which outlines the offer (rates, etc., contact, phone)

Does Friday, April 11 to Sunday, April 13, 2003 sound like a workable date for Reading IV? (Otherwise it goes to April 25-27)

No problem-

I will let John handle the hotel workings as has been done in the past. I guess what we need to work on is events for the weekend (drive, etc.) I will be in contact in the next week or 2 for some brainstorming.

Could everyone post what they liked and did not like about the last meet? That should help us choose a more suitable drive, and maybe plan some other fun events.

As for beating the number, I seriously doubt that would happen. Unless those of us with multiple SVXes (That include you too Randy) to bring them all in.

Please put the Naviguesser and I on the list. WE always make the Reading meet. You also forgot Warren & Sandy and SVXIT. They always attend. Maybe we can coax Maria & Chris (Ponzi) to come also.

I don't think we had enough time to visit at the last Reading meet. We could shorten the drive a bit to allow more visiting time. IMHO. :D Also, I was terribly disappointed that the Amish Buffet was packed out. I was really looking forward to eating until I made myself sick. :D

I have already thought about this. My friend Joe and I will be discussing several routes. Joe lives about 200 yards from the Denver Holiday Inn, and is a SVX enthusiast (even though he doesnt own an svx.) :) I have invited him to join the network message board.

I can help with what ever's needed, Has anyone given much though before into setting up a rally or something to that effect? Could be a nice change of pace from the typical group drive. Esp. with the traffic around these parts. However, I'm a skier and for me to take precious time off in the winter is a no no. I vote for April fools day or later.

Yeah Mike, I can get you in a few times a year w/o much fuss. There's no way I could keep up with you skiing though. A reconstructed knee, 1/4 titanium ankle and the fact I telemark with traditional leather boots kinda slows me up a bit. Amazing thing is they are so much better on my knees. I'll send you an email with my phone number and such in case you misplaced my last. I'm more than willing to help out with the planning in anyway shape or form. Maybe all of us could do a brainstorming meet to come up with a good plan of action. I know your kinda running out of spare time as school approches.

Hey Scott,

Was that lead car out of Indy a Laguna Blue? If it was, that was us. My friend was driving (quite fast I might add) and you guys were behind us for a while. I fell asleep and when I woke up and asked where you guys were he had no clue as some lady in a taurus was driving 70 mph and reading a novel(no joke).....she was all over the road.......

I'm reading about Reading (the English language is wonderful, isn't it?). ...and thinking about all the discussion that went on before Indianapolis. One of the early suggestions for Indy was to drive the actual speedway. Is anyone familiar with Maple Grove?? It is a Speedway the high school kids and other car clubs (Corvettes, etc) from Reading area go to. It is located actually quite close to The Morgantown exit of the PA Turnpike and therefore approximately 6 miles from the Morgantown Holiday Inn and probably 30-45 minutes from Denver HI.

I called to see about the SVX Club doing something there. Here is what the manager told me:

1. To rent just for SVX Club: $3500 (If 35 cars, then $100 each...they need insurance, staff, and an ambulance standing by...but this must be a week-day; they cannot do this on a weekend because that is when they are open to race fans.)

2. They can reduce the price to $2000 if we came early in the day on a Friday as the insurance is already paid for the day due to racing that night. (Sorry, I did not get more details, but it sounded "semi-private" ...no race fans in the stands until evening.)

3. The third option, described as a long day on a Saturday, is to pay a $22 entry fee per car and go through elimination trials in the morning and actually racing in front of fans in the afternoon or evening. He said he can categorize all SVX's to race together and give the club a special parking area to display them together.

The manager said the track is open 9-5 daily if any of you locals are interested in checking it out. It is not a demolition type place...safety is a big issue, track is 30 feet wide per car with concrete walls if you goof up. Track length is a quarter-mile with a quarter mile to slow down.

Being an older person who preferred to visit James Whitcomb Riley's Indiana home while you guys visited the Indy Museum, I'd like to go on a weekday and be the only group there, but of course, that's bigger bucks, especially if too few can get vacation on weekdays to get here. (I'd hate to reserve the raceway and be the only one to show up!!)

Well, I started your wheels turning. If you want me to do anything else for Reading IV, let me know. (Another calm covered bridge tour maybe; we didn't see nearly all of them at Reading iii ...)

To view and see schedule, the raceway web site is: www.maplegroveraceway.com

Sandy and Unkle Worn - one SVX apiece.

Hey :)

I was at Maple Grove this weekend for a chevy cavalier show/race and SCCA autox event. I tried to track someone down to ask about the possability of having an autox there. (as it would probably be a lot more fun than drag race - especially in a svx.) but the rep from the raceway disapeared when I was there. I will keep y'all updated.

Unk,
The V-bulletin folks supplied the spellchecker as a free service . . . for a while. Then, they got greedy and wanted us to pay for it. We polled the members at the time and asked if they really wanted to have a paid spellchecker. The vote was, "screw 'em, if we gotta pay, we can do without it." So, there you have, the REST of the story. Page 2.

FYI Regarding the Smorgasbord we went to at Reading II (that had been discovered by the whole world by the time of Reading iii): They still will not hold reservations on Saturdays and they are closed Sundays. They WILL provide party or banquet reservations Monday thru Friday. They are open 5 am to 8 pm every day but Sunday. By late afternoon, while the line is not hanging out the door, the parking lot is full even on week days. Unless something changes by April this is probably not a good place to plan on having dinner. Sorry, Randy. :(

It's called "Backfire" Ron. I used to "abbreviate" the word Straight by just writing "Strait" when I was in high school. It was corrected so many times, that I've tried to remove "strait" from my vocabulary so's I'm not tempted. Now I want to tell you about the ripple effect: Because we had to run for "them extra tars" Larry iii had no leader for one of his Reading iii groups. He had to lead all 35+- cars. Periodically he would forget about those cute quaint country covered bridges and he and his followers would head for the Walt Whitman, the Ben Franklin, the George Washington, the Tappan Zee or the Lincoln Tunnel... So you see, when you need "an extra tar," Larry iii heads for Jersey/New York with 30 SVX's from all over the nation in hot pursuit, and that's called the ripple effect.

It's covered. In the old stomping grounds of which you sometimes speak "da tunnel" is the closest thing I could think of to a "covered bridge." Do horse and buggies still provide tours of the park? Covered bridges.. horse and buggies.... Maybe you are a little more Amish than we thought! :)

Warren,

If you want covered bridges, take the lower levels of the GW, Verrazano, or Queenboro (59th St.) bridges

I'm good both Thurs and Friday nights. Pref after 7-8ish on Friday as I have a happy hour to attend. Who are we missing now? Nubs and Bobby? Wasn't there a Readingite interested in helping out?

A new forum has been created to serve the Reading Meet. Please post all your meet related questions etc there. It will help make everything a little more organized :)
