Christian Caudle over at Maniac Electric sent me this link from Scoobymods.com. She is familiar with this approach and it is her opinion that this does not do any harm to the electrical system. A good way to improve some of the low output issues at idle without having to go to the high-amp alternator.

By splicing a diode inline the alternator voltage sensor wire you can trick the alternator into seeing a lower voltage thanactually present. This allows for a higher voltage output from the alternator.

Hi John, I don't think this is a good thing to do. The silicon diode will drop 0.7 Volt, raising the regulator cutoff voltage from 14.7 to 15.4 volts, no problems till you do a long run, and the battery voltage will rise to 15.4 volts that will boil the battery.

Just my opinion:)
Harvey.
