View Full Version : Best way to mount pedals

I've been messing with these sti or wrx pedals, can't remember which now (I think they are all the same) off and on for a while. I have read a few other posts and how-to docs, and It seems like everybody is welding plates to use the top holes, or not using them at all, and having the upper nuts on the brake booster not tighten all the way. I would like to know if anybody has tried it the way I am attempting to.

Long story short, after making various templates out of cardboard and such, I have cut a piece off the new pedal box (up to where the top two bolts go) that interferes with the hump where the original pedals bolted to. (I hope this picture works, because I can hardly understand what I'm saying)

Then I made a metal plate with 2 long studs welded to it. This plate will sit on top of the pedal box, the studs protruding through the 2 top holes. Spacers will be cut to the correct length, then 2 more metal plates, drilled with two holes each, will be used to secure the whole assembly to the original bolt holes.

It's really a lot easier than I think I made it sound. More pics to come, probably Sunday, as I am about 30 mi. away from my car and only get to see her about one day every weekend.

I am wondering if anyone has went this route yet. I have not seen it posted yet, but maybe someone has tried it. If so please let me know if it will/won't work, raises pedals too high, etc., etc.

Ok, I had to hack a little more off than I thought. I could have gotten away with using the original holes, but I decided to take off a little extra material and drill new holes, just to be sure. Even before I brought them back and cut more, though, I had nearly no gap at the top booster bolts. I really could have called it a day there, but I'm a bit OCD like that.

Where I cut the first time around I had a tiny bit of weld left at the brake switch bracket, bet my new cut left me with no welds to tie that bracket to the top plate. Now my new objective is to get that welded back before next weekend. Next Sunday I should have pics of the pedals bolted to the booster, and how it clears at the top(that is if I have the wiring all squared away by then).

If anybody is paying attention, sorry no new pics today. I tried the pedals out with my new cuts, and there was PLENTY of clearance! That is the good news. The bad news (and reason for no pics) is that I forgot my wiring diagrams and didn't want to risk eliminating any wiring I need. When I got home and consulted my diagrams I found out I had all the wires I needed (only 6) right in my head the whole time, so I should have just done what I thought. Oh well, better safe than sorry, I suppose. Next week, then, for the installed pics.

I got my wiring done and pedals secured today. It is a good tight fit against the firewall, clutch pedal goes all the way to the stop without hitting the carpet. I am just glad to finally have this part done!! (almost anyways). I am going back out there tonight to take the pedals back off and cut off the part of the clutch pedal arm at the top that serves no purpose but to rub against my wires slightly, then I'll make my new brackets and secure the pedals with that top plate I made. I'll take a few more pics of the details and post them as well.

Here is the firewall mounting. Note the torn boot on the booster. If I was to ever do another one of these I would take that boot off and put it back in after the booster was in place. There was a little fighting with the booster to convince it to go where it was supposed to.

The top plate bolts sticking through the top mounting holes. Kind of hard to tell from the pic, but the pedal box does not touch or rub on anything in there, thanks to the cutting on the pedal box. You can see one of the holes from the original pedal box mounting at the top of the pic. These holes will be used with 2 metal plates and the top plate bolts to secure the pedals. The other hole is covered by 1 of my 4 bundles of wires. More on that later.

The clutch pedal bottomed out on the stop.

Blurry picture, but I'm trying to show the light shining all around under the pedal. It's close, but no touching!

Woo-Hoo!!:D

Didn't get as many pics as I would have liked. By the time my girl got back with the camera(phone) I already had the plates secured. Basically the only thing you are not seeing in all these pictures are the spacers made of a small diameter pipe just large enough to fit over the bolts in my top plate. These spacers goes between the two plates shown in these pictures and the underside of the top of the pedal assembly where the bolts stick through (the only way that makes sense, in other words).

Have any pictures of your firewall from under the hood? I'm trying to decide to if I want to try and get the hydro clutch components to fit, and how, or just go cable clutch.
