I'm thinking of new summer wheels and think I'll go with a 225/45-17 for tires. I have winter tires mounted on an extra set of stock wheels now. What would be a good tire to run in the summer that would still work ok in case I came across a early snow storm?

Ultra hIgh performance summer tires not only have treads that don't work for snow or ice, they have compounds that aren't sticky in cold weather. So, when you say that want want something that would work in an early season snow storm, you are saying that you intend to run the tire into the cold season. A tire that works in cold weather is probably going to be an all season tire. It will have some sacrifice in warm weather grip in order to maintain grip when it is cold outside.

I have Goodyear Eagle GT's on my Outback, 245-55 R17, but they are available in 245-45 R17. They are reasonably sticky in both warm and cold weather, pretty good on the tire noise. They are a deal at Tire Rack $107 each. They have very good user reviews on Tire Rack.

I have Bridgestone RE01R's on my SVX and they are dynamite on the track. I wouldn't take them out in freezing weather, however, even in the dry. I'm sure they would have very little traction.

Off the top of my head I'd say those would have comparable to the Yokohama AVID V4's that are on my parents Forester. Not bad in the summer, but nothing special. More a better than most touring tire than a performance one. An absolute horror show in the snow though, I refuse to drive that car in the winter if it doesn't have it's snow tires on. The lack of traction would be comical if it wasn't so frightening.

The way I play the game is summer tires late April/early May - mid October, snow tires for the cold months. My current summer tires are General Exclaim UHPs, with Blizzak Revo1s doing winter duty.

And really, if they salt the roads in your area, you don't want to be running your nice wheels when it gets even close to cold. Salt will destroy the finish in short order.

I had a set of those on my '06 Vibe and they were excellent tires. Got caught in the snow in mid-April and they were OK. I also got caught on a set of Falken FK-451 and they were terrifying in the snow.
I'd recommend a set of Nitto NeoGen. That's what I had this summer on the Vibe. It's dropped 2 inches with Tein S-Tech springs, Tokico struts and Progress rsb. They grip like mad and can be rotated to all four corners, they're asymetrical, therefore they wear evenly which is a good thing for Subarus.

These would be for summer only. I have a set of Toyo Garit's for the winter mounted on an extra set of stock wheels.

If they are for summer only then I'd say go for the Bridgstone RE01's if you don't mind spending some $$$... If you are cheap (like me) then pick up a set of the Kumho MX's... For the price, the grip levels are great!... But even I will admit that they aren't the best tires for the SVX (soft sidewall)...

I'm looking for a tire that I can run in the summer, but that will also work in the snow in case an early snow storm hits. Here in Wyoming you never know what the weather is going to do. We've had snow as late as June and as early as Sept. I just hate to get stuck(especially my wife) in a freak storm with summer performance tires. I don't drive it on the track or at extremes so I don't mind sacrificing some performance.

I have those tires on my svx with stock wheels. They are decent on dry pavement but are very bad in the rain. Could feel the car push (tires losing grip) going around roundabouts at anything over 20 mph(posted speed was 15). Also as the reviews show, Terrible in the snow even with awd

Mine were a little over 5/32 when I bought the car so while they weren't new, they still should be good. Also the treadwear seems pretty bad to me as well as I have only put 3k miles since buying mine and they are just below 4/32. I haven't even driven them all that hard either that they should wear that quickly.

These are what I have shod; the car came with them. So far, grip is very good and the ride is quiet (I thought it was getting noisy; turns out I have a bad bearing :p). Grip is great with the AWD in the rain and dry; not so great in the snow, but it'll get you by in a pinch. Wear has been good so far, but I only have about 10k+ miles on them.

There may be better deals out there, but this is the only tire I have experience with on the SVX.

For those who have bought from tirerack or other online suppliers did you get the road hazzard? If so is it easy to use if needed?

i had Nankang NS-1 225 45 17

and they were pretty badass.

they are cheap as **** (i paid 225 for all 4 brand new!! )

the summer traction is very good, a clear point of traction loss and a quick recovery if it did break loose,

i even took em to the snow... and they rocked!

not nearly as good as snow tire but they were good tires!

Yokohama s-drive.

I'm getting them for my new 18" Murano wheels within the next few weeks for summer tires and they're amazing.

You can look at all the reviews on tirerack.com

I'm a big fan of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. When I went to order them for my SVX, though, they were sold out. The tire place recommended Continental Conti Sport Contact 2. He said they're as good, and they were a little less expensive. I haven't driven my SVX since i've installed them, though, so I can't report.

I just ordered a set of 225/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza RE-01Rs to put on my summer wheels. The tires should be here any day now. Tirerack is blowing them out to make way for the new model (RE11 I think?) Normal price $188/each - I paid $104 :D Fantastic deal on top-rated summer tires.

UPS dropped me a set of the same (in 245/40/17) yesterday afternoon. They were $116 each or so.
