Earl's coming.... you have no excuse not to...:lol:

Well, actually I do...

Earl gave me permission to drive any one of his while he is gone, and everyone knows this is a once in a lifetime opportunity here! So I just cant mess that one up. Besides it the prefect time to swap out his 5 speed, I dont think he will ever notice the difference!

This is really interesting.. I don't think all SVXs could pull it off.. like doing barcelona red dash with my tan interior :barf:
However, in darker SVXs, I think it kinda adds to the futuristic look (like they do in some concept cars)..... but also a lot of classic cars go this route when restoring their vehicles. It can be a really smooth effect. :) Good luck on the results.

Well, actually I don't

Earl didn't give me permission to drive any one of his SVXs while he is gone, and everyone knows that I don't have any excuses here! So I just can't mess any of them up if I can't drive them. Besides, there is no prefect time to swap out his 5 speed because they are under lock and key as well as guard dogs patrolling the area. If I was eaten by one of the dogs, no one will ever notice the difference!

I fixed your post.

It's the first time I've seen a dash where the thin parts at the bottom haven't been snapped by some lazy mechanic trying to get the switch clusters out without disconnecting the cables.

Looks good in claret. Better than the nasty dark grey paint that Subaru used on my 94 dash. If only burr-walnut effect came in a spraycan.

Did you do the climate control? Did you keep the text because this is something i've never seen anyone pull of yet?

Djsvxxl

could of kept the text but was a little anxious to finish
got vinyls being made though.

I painted mine satin black last week. It looks good just need to do the front doors and the climate control but I have a way to paint it and keep the text so they light up.

Yea, i'm going to try to have them done by reading too along with the entire red interior lights. It looks coooool.

oh, i feel stupid.... i couldn't see your pic when i was at work. yeah, sweet, though it looks like you need another coat of clear. i did this to mine a few years back except mine are silver.....L@@k10520 10521
please tell me you did all the wood grain parts...even around the cig lighter, wasn't that fun;).

I am really impressed with both of paint jobs each of you did. I am still confused a bit as to what you did actually....is it simply a matter of spray painting the parts? What type of paint are you using? Clearcoat? Is there any sanding involved? Are there any long term ill effects? cracking?

Djsvxxl
04-03-2008, 08:35 PM
No clear coat needed,It's a single stage paint.
I did not "spray paint" the parts
Used a pros tool and spray gun and got the paint color matched

It's all about knowig the right people.

Please provide info on getting the text made for the climate control letters as i have been wanting to get rid of my fake wood since I got my car.

Saw these tonight and they look pretty damn good. There's just a few minor imperfections that need to be addressed, but it is plastic, and it's hard to get perfect with paint.

lilbrudder

ss metal flake paint.... guess you won't be doing much buffing then:p. you can still clear it if you really want some depth and protection;).
Did you get the cig bezel off? if you haven't tried yet i would paint in place as i had to take apart the whole dash to do it right.
as for the climate control letters i VERY lightly sprayed over them(air brush worked good) in day light the letters are kinda faint as the letters were white to start and don't contrast the silver very well, but at night the light shines through well.
the arm rest inserts are a PITA too, because the tabs are very brittle and require alot of patients to get them off intact.

I like the way that looks!

Check with your painter friend to see how long you need to wait before buffing the paint. A good rubbing out will get rid of what little texture is left on the parts, making them glass smooth.

VERY well done, sir! Looks awesome. I'd love to do this to mine, but I'd have to find the right color. Like said, the Tan / Beige interior would need the perfect color to accentuate between it and the red exterior. Maybe just match it to the suede color. I saw a pretty well-done picture of that a few weeks ago, i think. Recolored most of the interior to a more light tan / cream color, looked good.

Good luck on the rest of it, XXL!

Very nice! I've tossed the idea of doing that to my teal, and you just helped make up my mind!

Nice job.

I like the idea. My '94 S40 has the grey like Phil's does and is not too inspiring.

If I was doing this I would not use colour, I would use piano gloss black. This would match most cars. It would require a very high gloss shine to make it properly suave and avoid just looking dark and dreary.

One coat would be no good. It would need a couple of coats of clear for depth.

:)

I'm not one for changing the SVX but that has to be one of the most tastefull mods I have ever seen. Job well done!!

b-rad graphite metallic would look great with red outside and beige inside.

Thanks for the feedback
These plastic pieces are the worst for paint to stick to
I hoped for a little better but I'm pleased

did you use any plastic adheasion promotors?

Djsvxxl
04-04-2008, 10:36 PM
It's called trying to get rid of all the Armor All and cleaner that was used:lol:
i scuffed all the surfaces and used a pre paint cleaner
The paint would just not stick
the engine covers did not have the same issue

I still like the way that looks!

You needed to have used a primer/sealer. Plastic is finiky about automotive paints. Sometimes it lays smooth, sometimes it crazes, but mostly it attacks the plastic, giving you a close approximation of elephant skin.

I've been a model builder for years....laquer & plastic are a headache without a good primer/sealer. For future reference, the el-cheapo primer at Wal-Mart is about the best I've found for blocking the paint from attacking the plastic.

I saw someone mention Piano black a few posts up. I've actually considered that, at length. However my thoughts are that the interior would need to be more of a cream color to pull that off. I like that combo, when I redid the interior in my Pinto, I did cream & piano black.

how did ya get them out??? the back seat covers of the window switches I'm assuming is what we're talking about right???

Djsvxxl

you take out the rear seat, lower the top half and pop two clips out on each side. Then the whole panel can be pulled up and out.
unplug the switch and its out.

Its for the afterburners...not really just power mode switch.
