13. Stop sunvisor drooping for <$2 How To (http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/19267.pdf)

Anyone know where to buy the #235 Brass Insert manufactured by Hillman online? Because I've looked all over the hardware stores here and can't find the darn peice.
I've tried the other methods of fixing our visors suggested and they don't work. The internals of my visor is also slighty different that the ones shown in the "how to" pictures. Once I find a method which works for my visors, I will post pictures. I think this hillman insert might work but I can't find it to begin to try. lol

I found it at County stores, a local hardware store. I could not find it online, and I looked extensively.

I also had this mod accomplish one and only thing - destroy my sunvisor. It did NOT fix the drooping, and instead it made it very dirty (alot of the work has to be done on the visor or with the visor, you have dirty hands, and you inadvertently get it dirty) and it has a huge cut in the back of it from opening it up to get at the "innards" to repair it. The internals of my visor were also slightly different, but using the same principles, I attempted to repair it. My recommendation is to just buy new visors.

Just a word of caution.

I know there's a thread on lighting the grill (seemingly more love/hate and controversy than clearing the diffusor for the rear lights!), I'll have to look when I get home and see if it can be done for <$100. Personally, I think it looks pretty slick.

You are both in error.

Cruisen 15 had the idea first, started the thread, and it evolved into a nice idea with links to How-tos. However, as it involves mods, it should always have been in the Mod forum from the beginning.

Zandar copied over the idea to the Mod forum, and let it run. However, he also was in error as there is actually a rule here that threads should not be multiplied, but continued on from before if a previous thread exists.

Which it obviously did.

What we can do here is connect the two threads into one, and delete the original from the Technical forum. I think that's what we should do.

Joe

Yes, the original thread was cruisen_15's. Check the first post, wherein I intoned, "This was posted under "Technical Q & A," thought it would go better here." Admittedly, I neglected the forum posting rule prohibiting thread repost.

As for the rest, I'm so so so so sorry I didn't source cite for t3h int3rw3bz post. I do surely hope that the copyright franchise board doesn't revoke my posting license, and I vow that all future proceeds from this thread will go straight to cruisen_15 :p.

Honestly, and all sarcasm aside, I find this forum a great and useful source of information about a car I have come to adore. I haven't come up with a single idea in this thread, and the only reason I posted it was to promote and promulgate cost-effective enhancements for our beautiful rides.

That being said, I suppose I could include a "credits" section in the interest of utter ridiculousness; but then, of course, I would have to include every poster who has had an idea in this thread, everyone who showed them how to do what they can do, the founder for making the site, the original site designers, the web host, the MS font developers, the electric company, the best boy and rigging gaffer, the founders of the Indo-European tongue and all subsequent language contributers leading up to English, and, naturally, Al Gore for giving us the internet.

If a mod wants to change the name on post 1 to cruisen_15, I really couldn't care less. I don't see how I can "steal" any credit in this thread as I admit to simply reposting a post about other people's ideas and then maintaining it.

Dude, um . . . I don't know how to say this without being insulting . . . it's spelled "retarded." Sorry, I can't help but point out blatant irony when it stares me in the face.

Maybe you just meant that you were once very sour, then sweetened, and are now sour again. Okay, /spellingpoliceoff.

Thanks Zandar

I hope you don't ever win an Oscar, your speech might over-run.:rolleyes:

Actually I would like to thank all contributors, for mods, for suggestions, for ideas for threads, for contributing generally to make this a very informative forum.

We will connect the two threads together so that all the info is in the one place.

Thanks fellas.

13. Stop Sunvisor Drooping for <$2 How To (http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/19267.pdf)

Anyone know where to buy the #235 Brass Insert manufactured by Hillman online? Because I've looked all over the hardware stores here and can't find the darn piece.
There's a full thread about this fix (http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19868); I posted the details on how to find the parts and how to get it to work (see posts #28 & 33). It worked for me for about a year, then they started drooping a bit again. I recommend you try this solution (http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/14351.pdf) instead, or do what I did: I removed the visors entirely (because they obstructed my view, even when folded up) and for those rare moments when the sun gets in my eyes (hey, I'm in Seattle here) I have a pair of sunglasses that sit on the instrument panel.

I thought of some....

-K&N or STI drop in filter.....so simple nobody thought to mention?
-Red Top Optima Battery.... just nice to have... no questions, that puppys gonna crank.

-Kill Switch (under dash or otherwise) (i wish my last car had this!)
-wing removal? I did it to my last car so i guess its a mod... you gottta buff the paint and fill the holes whatnot

-Bump-stops for slammy trunks... i just put a doorknob stopper rubber near the latch to absorb some of the slam....solved the problem "don't slam the..." *WHAM!!!* "...trunk."

They all seem simple enough.. But I thought the drop in filter was crap..? Cone filter sucks in warm air or something? Is that the same?

Kill switch? Get someone to do a write up! (Like NikFu) :p

The doorknob stopper thing is a great idea, but I imagine that problem would be solved if you had new trunk struts..

The drop in filter just goes in place of the stock air filter... its not a cone or anything like that. instead of a Fram or other brand air filter, you get K&N or the sti one. hence "drop in"

i suppose ur right, optima = spendy
i think i got redtop on sale at kragen for 89.99
someone mentioned that the off brand sealed cell units were cheaper too....
same thing just not optima name

I work at a furniture store and have access to the threaded inserts mentioned in the droopy visor thread. I'll have to check how many I have and what size they are, but I suppose if anyone needed one or two and I have the right sized ones (after I fix my stubborn visor first of course ;) ) I could probably send them in the mail. Again, let me stress that I have to check on what I have first, but seeing how this board has already helped me IMMENSELY, I could see this as a way for me to give a little back.

Also, I saw it was mentioned, but I saw no detailed description of the resonator mod. Am I missing something?

Baffle plates inside the resonator sometimes come loose and vibrate. They tend to rattle or fizzle at about 1900 - 2000 rpm. It is annoying because it makes it sound like the car is falling apart, which is not true.

The cheap fix is remove [cut out] the resonator and replace [weld in] with a length of straight through pipe.

This changes the sound quality from the exhaust. To my ears it makes a flat hard blare and is hard to like.

Others think the SVX is too quiet, and they like the different sound.

You pays your money.

Joe

- Kit form to be worked out soon if we can track down a better light source that requires less modification.

I painted the fake light lens in the middle as opposed to lighting it up. It may be just me but I think it looks good. Just an idea. Also... Those headlights are stock and they aren't yellowed :) I'm kinda lucky cause I get to use our shops tools but we bought the 3m kit with the buffer + polisher. Although I think you could accomplish the same thing with the right combination of sandpaper and polishing cloth.
