Hello all,

I've been a long time fan of Subarus. I had a '02 WRX that I sold due to expenses. I got jeep to tide me over, but am tired of the truck and its gas mileage etc ...

I long for my Subby back. So I am looking for an SVX in decent shape. Doesnt have to be perfect condition, but I am not the most savvy mechanic either. Just my daily driver.

My price range is < 5k.

If anyone knows of any, please let me know!

Sammy

For under 5,000$, you can buy a very nice svx if you patiently search around. Good luck, and hang in there.

I agree with Eric ( ;) ). You should be able to find a very nice sound SVX in that price range and you will not have to start to do major service on it at once. Keep your eyes open and one will come along that is sound. Look in the How To Documents under SVX informaton for information about buying a used one. Good luck. :)

Anyone have any thoughts/comments on this SVX for sale:

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=213848267&dealer_id=59078891&car_year=1994&model=&num_records=100&make2=&start_year=1994&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&search_type=both&distance=0&make=SUB&color=&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=13760&advanced=&end_year=1994&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=230&LNX=ESTAFSRCHUSDTEXT

I sent the seller an email, and I got a reply that sounded promising:

Email Sent:
"I was wondering if the SVX was still for sale. If so, I have a few questions:
1) Are you the original owner?
2) Has any major work been done to this car, tranny, wheel bearings?
"

Response:
"I am not. I bought it used about 5 years ago and sold it to my nephew a couple years ago. My nephew is in Utah in school, I am selling it for him.
As you may know, there are many SVX's on the road today that have not been properly maintained, or maintainence done by shade tree mechanics. All the services done on this car since new were done by Subaru dealers.
Wheel bearings were last done at 120k along with power steering service. (Reciept: $870)
All four tires on the car are near new, about 3-4,000 mi. (~$500Reciept for 2 $268)
At 130k a major tuneup was done that included changing the timing belt and water pump, all external belts, new filters all around and installed platinum plugs. Replaced window regulator. (Receipt: $2,800)
Total spent on factory service since 120K: $4,200
My nephew is negotiable on price. He will accept $4,000.
Please feel free to call with any other questions."

Anyone have any thoughts or comments?

Anyone have any opinions on what is best to get ... Lower Mileage that has not had to replace much, or higher mileage that has already done some work? Say, the mileage difference of 60k or 120k.

I am considering selling my pearly. I love my pearly but I already got an STi, an Isuzu Rodeo, and a 98 Legacy GT, and frankly, I just ran out of parking spaces, and the neighbors are getting annoyed. Also, I *may* have found the woman I would like to one day call wife, so you know how that goes. Here she is (the SVX, that is...):

I am considering $4000 with Prodrive PFF-7 18" wheels. If interested, PM me and I'll give you all the details.

milage is not the issue with these cars lower milage is nice to maintain value but its not really a big deal, weve had trannies blow at 30k and trannies last over 170k, its the way theyve been treated and maintained. just make sure the maintainence was done as scheduled, and judge the person that your buying it from and determine if they are the kind of person that would put off an oil change for 9,000 miles instead of every 3,000.

ive had a 92 with 100k that had been beaten pretty badly and ran like crap... and i have a 97 with 171k that runs smooth as if its from the factory. one was previously owned by a teenager who was college bound that was selling it cause he couldnt afford the maintainence (big red light for neglected maintainence), the other one was owned by a middle aged adult who provided full detailed records of the entire history of the car, and had 2 other beautiful cars, and a wife that made him choose which one to let go... i bet you could guess which car belonged to whom.

also consider the differences in the years too. like the 92's and 93's with the trannie issues and the auto seatbelts, the 94 and 95 models came in FWD models as well, and the 96 and 97's not having the "power light" and 97's with the change in grill.... (i had on a 94 FWD and i would rather drive the 94 fwd than the 92 awd... but i love the 97 the best, and most likely wouldnt touch another year) also consider the subtle differences in the years as well IE: the "auto seatbelts", the transmissions, the airbags, the interiors (leather, sueded, or half sueded) the 2 tone paint, etc.... and some colors were only available in certain years (ie laguna blue, claret, silver/black, etc.)

also be careful of the "over modded" svx's and make sure is wasnt overly tinkerd with by someone who doesnt know enough about cars to warrant it, ive seen some pretty horrible "makeshift" and halfassed mods (wires quadruple bundled, sheetrock screws, holes drilled into the exhaust, and my personal favorite, someone screwed a hole not looking where it was going and pierced the gastank then using a screw and rubber cement to patch it:eek:)

look around, see whats out there, then decide what exactly you want in a SVX.

it took me 3 tries before i decided on the tan interior 97 lsi as my preferred favorite.

also if its from someone here on the network, look into some older posts of theirs to determine what kind of life the car had with them (ie racing stories, engine fires, the best way to weld a new radiator support, resetting the airbag, etc)
