View Full Version : Building Equal Length Headers

TomsSVX
04-29-2007, 06:26 PM
Well since the engine build is creeping up on me sooner than later. I figured a nice set of equal length headers would be a nice compliment:D So I picked up an old engine I had at my folk's place and put together a shell of an automatic. Bolted it together and flipped it over. I then put on a good set of engine mounts I had laying around and placed an extra front subframe on top of the mounts... I shimmed the performance bar(torque bar) so it is at the proper height and angle.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/TomsSVX/43487.jpg

I ordered the following pieces in which I will be building them
8 Mandrel bent J-bends from Summit 1 3/4" OD
2 Exhaust manifold flanges from Small Car's Vanagon site
2 3-1 10" collectors from Stahl Headers in York PA

Should be fun, I cannot wait to get these pieces in the mail this week and get started... esp. since the end of the semester at school is upon me:D If anyone has suggestions or advice, feel free to drop some feedback but right now they will be similar to what svxfiles has on his car.

Tom, you certainly go about things in the correct manner. It is hard to provide advice. All one can do is emphasize what you already know.

The difficult part which requires extra attention, well worth the effort, is the junction points and preserving free flow in these areas. This will be where you can exhibit your sheet metal skills. :p

Wishing you a hastle free project, Trevor. ;)

finished the tig welding and when I get back to Philly I am hoping my collectors will be there by then. These should be done by then end of the week. Install will come when I have time to head down to Old Tom's place so we can do the rest of the exhaust

TomsSVX

EGR= Exhaust Gas Recirculation... Every model ppost 92 had an EGR temp sensor which would throw a code if the EGR was not hook up. You could make a bung and plum a new line from the new headers if you needed to. I would make another set of these for 1500 which would include a new bung for the EGR... and new tube for the EGR and two bungs for the 02 sensors in the collectors...

These headers will increase exhaust flow substantially BUT that is uselss unless you are in need of increasing the flow like all of the FI guys out there

No but really...remember when you used to take the pick-up to the track, you've come a long way. get this thing on the road and we'll have a little race, I should be home after the 21st for a week and I'll prob head to ATCO at least once.

Nice headers. They should compliment your supercharger quite nicely. I'm assuming these will be true dual exhausts with no cat? What kind of muffler? I'm assuming you will relocate the O2 sensors downstream of the collector fitting. Have you thought about welding in a bung for an EGT? It might help you when you are tuning your new rebuilt supercharged engine.

TomsSVX
05-03-2007, 09:38 PM
02 bungs are getting welded into the collectors and one more will be placed in for a wideband. EGT's can be tapped into the exhaust anywhere I want so if I decide to grab up some I will later

We made ours out of Aluminized tubing.
So the only place they should rust is the ground and welded places.
Mine are more than two years old with no sign of rusting.:)
1200F ceramic coating paint.;)
Real ceramic coating would be tons better, but you know, time and money.

Try looking at the other pics;) I used the two aero's then right into a dual in dual out X- muffler from magnaflow... Then its just pipes out to the tips....

Tom, please educate me as I am interested in your approach.

Does "dual X" indicate that two inlets come in, are connected and then exit as two outlets. If so, does not gell with me. :)

Yes Trevor, I wanted to keep the banks seperate all the way back. To keep space to a minimum and to cut cost (one $90 muffler is cheaper than two). I bought this muffler under the influence that it did not cross the banks but when I got it... I was wrong...

Tom,

If you are ever interested in dyno testing this setup or anything else, I am willing to do it or help with it somehow if you do not have the time. Intake setups, etc......I can make the time.

Xotic Motorsports (who used to be in Cochranville, PA.....40 minutes from me) just merged with Verocious Motorsports (a shop about 7 minutes from my house, where I get all my silicone hoses and piping from). I talk to the shop manager there (Andy) yesterday and am anxious to start testing out something. Just trying to find a reason to stop back in there before I start tinkering with stuff. I will probably be in there for some reason testing something the first week of next month, just to see for myself the changes it makes.

If you rather do it yourself (totally understandable), their site is-->
verociousmotorsports.com. They are in Wilmington, DE. 302-472-0601

Thats where MikeCG and I dynoed our cars on 12psi and 9psi. They are good people. I am going to try and hit the track sooner than later for some before and after 1/4m runs and compare the #'s to see if I picked up the top end power I was looking to. I will be interested in dynoing the car soon to get a baseline for the before and after of the engine build. Once we have ur intake done, it would be ideal for both of us to hit the dyno... hell maybe we can convince Old Tom to get his beast on the meter machine:D

Trevor, this picture will give you an idea about the internal piping of the Magnaflow Young Tom brought.
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/svxfiles/42697.jpg
This is of my two into one , but his two into two has an X pattern that is great for engines with unequal fireing.
We did not take an internal picture of his, but is basicly an X pipe with perforated piping, wrapped with sound deadening, in a Stainless Steel body.
If The magnaflow used a common body, with seperate pathways, I would like it a lot better, but his top end has been free'd up, and he likes the sound.
Did He mention that its LOUD?!:D

If so why? Performance? Pretty sound? cost? Ease of mounting? Novelty value? :)

From Magnaflow's website;
" Smooth Transitions
Stamped Y-Pipe and Tru-X Pipe transitions are great for single/dual, dual/dual and balance tube applications. MagnaFlow's stainless steel Tru-X crossover pipe represents a significant leap forward in technology over traditional H-pipes. The more gentle radius allows for better exhaust gas scavenging, noise cancellation and better balance between cylinder banks. The result is a significant increase in power and torque but a reduction in db sound levels... the best of both worlds. "

On a uneven firing engine, all American V-8s, it has shown to help power.

Our engines are even fireing, and with a true dual work like two seperate 3 cylinders.
Had YT known about the X-Pipe in the muffler/resonator, he would not have gone for that design.
But his new system does flow better than the last one, due to larger diameter pipes, mandrel bends, and of course the headers.
When he gets it to the track his trap speed will be higher than last time.

I am thinking about gutting my exhaust, and switching to just straight pipes headers to bumper. I also would like it to be a "true dual" exhaust. So i was thinking, the 3300cc will be split into two 1.6(close to 1.7)cc. So kinda like all the civics are. Those can run 2.5 in exhausts, but cause ours is only 3cy on each side, I was thinking like 2in, or maybe even 1.75? I know our cars have this whole thing with back pressure, and since my car is currently N/A, I want to still have that bite to match the bark. Any help would be appreciated.

tom has the best setup for N/A applications... A straight pipe exhaust would be even louder than mine... god forbid... and would decrease bothj top and low end power... OT has the exact design for great sound and optimal performance

You have read my mind and answered my problem; i.e. how could an informed person, by intent, use such an arrangement on the SVX.

I can now sleep in peace ;)

You are on the right track, particularly in regard to going for a small pipe diameter. I would like to see someone run two 1.75 - 2" dual straight pipes into the OEM big tank of a muffler, so that it would serve as a plenum chamber, This would not be an expensive experiment.

Alternatively twin free flowing mufflers, fitted well aft, could be a superior alternative, but would involve a little more outlay.

Your idea of basing your thoughts on other known applications is also good thinking, when little tangible evidence is available. All the theory in the world is not worth a little practical logical experimenting. ;)

I might have you matched already, I am currently running it just off the headers. It stops right before the third-cat. Everything from there back is gone. Me and my friends did a sound test, and they could hear the car about 200yds away, with traffic on ogden ave.

I was asking about laying up some pipes, becasue I am slighty anoyed by the vibrations it makes in the cabin.

Trevor, I was thinking about maybe gutting all the cats, and running the exhaust into the muffler with just the stock opening, and doing that muffler mod I have heard about on here.

I had presumed that you were interested in performance. :( As an old person, I do not like being pissed off as I am at this moment. You exhibit the level of your wisdom and intellegence.

I am always interested in performance. It just so happens that it’s probably going to be loud, and I happen to like loud cars. I'm sure your not very tolerant for all things adolescent, but I am. I don't live by you, and probably will never see you. Oh, and thanks for judging my wisdom and intelligence cause I'm 19 and like things that most 19yr old like. Now I don't know you, and you seriously don't know me. I have no idea as to why you would be pissed off. Did I insult you personally? I made a general comment that old people do not like loud cars. I did not say "Mr. Trevor is an old man who is easily annoyed, and a huge grouch." I would appreciate it if you would bite your tongue when it comes to gauging other people intelligence over an on-line forum. If you would like to continue this through PM's, just say so. Otherwise, I'm handing this thread back to Tom, and going to continue talking about my exhaust.

I thought old people liked louder cars because of their hearing loss and them not knowing if the car is running or not. This header would be fitting for them. :D

Well, it wasnt my intention to start a pissing match. I just like loud cars, I think its funny as hell to make ppl jump, and piss off old people in my neighborhood.

I am older than 'old Tom', and I LOVE loud cars, but the sound has to be the kind of sound that 'EXPRESSES' performance. I followed a mazda down the road. It HURT my ears, but I was not impressed.

I have a 65 Dodge van, yea, an old 'Hippie' unit, in the stable. It, too, is loud. It is the kind of 'loud' that VIBRATES the inside of your body, but the ears do NOT hurt. From a 20 MPH roll, I can carry the front wheels about 40 ft. If I hit it from a dead stop, parts spray all over the road. After 10 years of 'road service' duty, it will be used for 'truck-pulls', now. The dirt will allow the lug bolts, drive shaft and transmission case to survive a 'launch'. I guess I will have to remove the bed and 'paisley' curtains, and 'shag' carpet and barn board panneling too'. I guess I can leave the "Protected by Smith and Wesson" sticker, since it still IS!

The first time I started it when my new wife, ( 20 years ago), was standing next to it, she turned away and walked about 20 feet. She said, " it HURT my belly!"
When a guy I worked with heard it, He called me "The Road Warrior" on the company radios for 4 months.

Do NOT burn my ears with NOISE!!! If it don't sound like it eats meat, put the money into the CD player!

I also have a 57 Chevy school bus that WAS at 'Woodstock' in 69. I might have to bring it back alive and put a few 20K amps and 37 gazillion speakers so I can 'chose' not to hear loud mazdas, etc...

Old farts have the best toys. Did I ever tell you guys about the time I SHOT 'RAP' tapes with a 357 Magnum????? BUSTED some busta-rhymes! I did!

Oohhh...this is the kind of 'sound' I would love. Just don't start your car around pregnant women. Their children may have problems and be a little shaky. :( I hope you don't have any 20yr old kids. Get in my belly!!

My youngest daughter, that will be 'Sweet 16' in september, used to sleep in her carseat at 'Ground ZERO', at the rod jousting compitition. Sort of like being on the starting line at the Nationals! Now, she tells me to "turn down the music" when I drive her to school!
If I was playing Peter, Paul and Mary, I would understand, BUT I am playing Nickleback, etc!

I guess I need to work on her to get her to 'appriciate' the sound of open headers and NOS!! stage 4!!!

Has anyone tried to NOS a 2.2??? I am thinking about it!

Input!!! I need INPUT!!
