Oh, and keep in mind that I know very little about cars, in general...so bear with me.

I was checking the transmission fluid and wound up breaking off a little hose.

What hose?

Well...if you are trying to reach the tranny dipstick, and are standing on the driver's side of the engine bay (if you're on the other side...well...), there's this little cylinder up top, right up against the firewall, right above where the dipstick is.

It's attached to the firewall, and has a little hose that goes in one side, and out the other. It then disappears underneath the plastic engine cover, and attaches (it seems) to the small spring cam things.

I broke off the hose on the driver's side.

It doesn't seem to have had any adverse effects.

But, will it? And what is it?

Thanks!

That's the cruise control vacuum box. The nipple you broke off feeds a vacuum line that goes over to the control box under the main fuse panel. The other side is a cable going to the throttle body. Other than your cruise control it doesn't have any other effect.

I may have an extra if you want, send me a PM...

I broke mine off in the first week of ownership....

Well, that explains that!

The cruise hasn't worked in years. I gave up on it after all the mechanics quoted me pricey fixes.

The little nipple that the hose fits onto must have been cracked for some time, hence losing the vacuum, hence no cruise.

I say that because the thing broke off yesterday with just a touch. Broke is actually strong...it more like crumbled.

So, you may have an extra vacuum box? Or nipple?

I looked at the thing and can't tell if you can somehow fix just the nipple, or if it needs a new box...??

I may have the whole box. I tried to fix my first one with a metal tube and some JB weld, that worked temporarily. When you do repair it, it's probably a good idea to replace the entire vacuum hose. You cna pick it up by the foot at any auto parts store.
