Hi all

Does anyone know how to remove the grey plastic bit on the large shaft of the rear view mirror? It looks like it hides the bolts of the long shaft or something. I'm trying to hardwire a radar detector and don't want to rip the dash apart to come up from underneath. Will come down from the dome lights instead, but can't get a wire in there!

If I recall, you just yank on the mirror. It's made to break-away in event of an accident. Once it is down you'll see what you have to take apart to re-attach it.

It may be breakaway, but there are four screws under the cover that hold it into the ceiling. I wouldn't just yank it off unless you plan on replacing it. Get a thin-bladed screwdriver or knife to pry the plastic cover off.

I had to replace my rearview mirror after it fell off one time and if I remember correctly the plastic piece either slides or pops off then you can get to the screw underneath.

Yes, this is correct. One can just pull the mirror (or have someone's face smash into it) to get it off. There is only 1 (one) screw underneath that is held on by a little metal clip which will move to allow the mirror to be taken off.

Done. Prise the plastic bit off with a thin blade, then you can get to the screws. Cheers all.

Will the detector work through the front glass, with the titanium coating?:o

Certainly seems to be, picking up neon signs left right and center! (Haven't tuned it for NZ yet!).Maybe it's only the US that has that coating?

Mine never worked well. Not in time anyway. Neither did my epass. Had to get a special external mount.

Hey man - just checked out your car picture, your mags are on the wrong sides - down by valve stems on the rims you will see the letter "L" = fit to LHS (the RHS does not have any letter) - makes for better cooling to brakes & less possibility to warp those brake discs........that's what happened to mine.

Floatingkiwi - had to use an external GPS antenna to get my Navman iCN635 to work in the car (attached antenna to inside trunk lid) - fitted unit in the dash pod area (out of sight). Some NZ new cars came in with the mettalic window coating film.

Nice leather seats! What product do you use on the fake wood trim? Looks nice.

Mine is a jap import, so I suspect no film. Also it has been detecting all the neon signs!

I picked up a gray auto dimming mirror for $3 yesterday at pick-a-part and am trying to install it, but can't seem to get the plastic piece covering the screws to pop off. Have managed to slip a thin putty knife all the way around, but so far can't get it loose.
Any helpful hints..??

Got it.
Took a small flat head screwdriver and pushed it in the space between metal frame and the plastic from the windshield side. Popped right off. Bad news is I'm going to need an OEM metal frame piece to mount my new mirror. Any one got a spare?

I made a braket when I installed my auto dimm.

Not the best pic.

The mirror I picked up has the glue to the windshield type mount and wiring cover. Problem is need the metal piece to remount the plastic cover to get a cleaner look. That's why I hope someone has a spare with a busted mirror since I only need the frame to get the mounting pieces.

My self dimming-compass-rear view mirrors glue to windshield also. The original bracket can be shortened... cut in the right place... and the plastic cover reinstalled with the circuit wires covered with the plastic things that come with the glue-on type kit. The attachment shows how mine looks. The visor is down as a reminder that the glued mirror bracket should be place far enough down and forward to allow for the visors to be brought down without not impeding the sides of your new self-dimming-compass-rear view mirror.
Wiring access would be reached by removing the component that houses the map-light switches, etc and using the existing wires. Current flow is practically non-existent.

Nice thing to have and if done correctly looks like a factory job!

Good luck,

Just confirming, so your new auto-dimming rearview is NOT mounted to the windshield but rather to the factory mount that you modified? Or are you saying you mounted it to the windshield & shortened the factory mount to use to hide the wires? Also, I see there are several of these mirrors out there, any particular one you recommend? My factory mirror is so loose I hate trying to flip the lever at night, this seems like a perfect solution!!
