Mirror Problem

I have had the misfortune to find my passenger side mirror glass broken by an unknown culprit. A replacement has been obtained no problem from a used parts dealer, but I am faced with the nead to repaint it as the colour is vastly different.

The obvious alternative is to transfer the innards and I have investigated accordingly. After much dubious prying, it would appear that the black plastic outer surround is clipped into place. However the force needed to remove it could well break the fastening tabs.

Is there anyone here who has taken a mirror apart and so can provide details of the actual fastening system involved ? :confused:

Hey, Trevor while at school one day I was browsing threw Alldata printing out procedures I needed to do to my SVX or thought I might do in the future. I came across one tittled "Outside Mirror Glass- cracked or distored". I printed it out because the mirror glass on the drivers side is kind of distorted. It looks like the mirror finish is flaking off in little spots. Anyways I'll write the procedure for it just as I printed it out. You'll have to let me know how well it works if you try it. Hope this helps.

Tools required:
small regular screwdriver, heat gun, safety glasses, scraper or equivalent.

Removal of damaged mirror:
1) Heat the mirror holder. See figure 1. Take care not to overheat the mirror assembly or the painted surface. (In figure 1 all the picture shows was the black trim piece thats right around the mirror)
2)Carefully insert a regular screwdriver between the mirror and the mirror holder. Gently lift the mirror out of the holder
3)If you are working with a heated mirror, it will be necessary to disconnect the wires at this time.
4)Clean the old adhesive from the mirror holder assembly. Using scraper or equivalent.

Installation of new mirror glass:
1)If the mirror glass has a protective coating on it remove it now.
2)Install either two urethane strips two pieces of doublr sided tape to the mirror assembly.
3)If you are working with a heated mirror, it will be necessary to connect the wires at this time.
4)Position the mirror and carefully press into place, making sure the mirror is positioned behind the mirror holder.
5)Confirm proper operation of the mirror assembly.

Outside rear view mirror- replace one 0.3hrs
Outside rear view mirror- replace two 0.5hrs

Thanks a lot for the response. :)

My problem is trying to get the thing to pieces, i.e. remove the black surround without damaging it. The instructions so kindly provided appear to cover replacement of the mirror glass, while all is in place. I prefer to change the mirror assemblies, so as to retain an OEM glass which is convex.

Hmm...It seems you have two complee mirrors then, one broken and the right color and the other not the right color, but unbroken...
Id just pry the black trim peice off as carefully as I could. If you break it, then youll just have to have the new mirror painted. Why just replace the glass and possibly damage a mirror so you can have the same old, rock chipped bug splatterd, faded mirror..When you can have a complee new assembly?
