I am having difficulty locating 225 50 16R tires . Can 225 55 or 60 16R or 215 50 16R be used?

they can but then the speedo will be slightly off because of a different tire diameter.

To keep the correct speed on the speedometer go with one of the following tire sizes:
205/55-16
225/50-16
245/45-16

Would the 205-55-16 not be to skinny versus the 225-50-16. I realizes that the speedo would be the same calibration but would they look OK on the stock rim intended for the 225's.When I look at my tire/rim straight on they look about flush. The 205's might have more rim looking out when you look at them straight on as they are narrower. I would like to go to the 205's as they probably will not be as noisy as the fatter 225's while driving as I do not need the fatter tires for high speed driving/cornering etc.
Also , will the narrower 205's cause any problems for the suspension/brakes (ABS ) due to the car's heavy 3500 lb's plus weight ?
Thanks.

Would the 205-55-16 not be to skinny versus the 225-50-16.I do believe there is at least 1 member running the 205's on his SVX.

215-55-16's are very close. Thats what I run for snows. I believe the 97's had them stock from the factory. I believe the speedo runs a little on the fast side anyway.

I'm running the 215/55-16's right now and, via GPS, determined my speedometer to be accurate to about 1.5%. The speedo still says I'm going faster than I actually am.
My next winter tires will be 205/60-16's and they will probably make the speedometer dead on.
