Hello,
Does anyone have changed the transmission filter? I've seen there are tansmission filters and transmission filters kits, what is the difference?
Does anyone know an european online store (webpage) where I could by the SVX's transmission filter/kit?
Another question: does the SVX have particles fiter?
Thanks!

There are 2 filters

- there is a screen filter located in the transmission oil pan
- there is a particle filter located at the bottom of the radiator. This filter is approximately the same size as the fuel filter.

Wich filter is the filter of the photo?
I've found this filter in many U.S. online stores but not the radiator one you said.
P.D.: when i said particles filter I referred to "pollen filter".
To have the things clearly can anyone post ALL the filters the SVX has(Air filter, transmission filter or filters, oil filter...)
thanks!

That one is inside the transmission. You can see it once you remove the transmission oil pan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Alcyone_SVX

"The early automatic transmission failures were caused by a screen installed at the entrance of the transmission cooler. Normal wear debris would build up at the screen and reduce/stop automatic transmission fluid flow and thus kill the transmission. Subaru later corrected this by removing the screen and installing a proper filter in the automatic transmission fluid circuit."

The screen that was removed was in the radiator. The internal transmission screen filter should never be removed (unless you want to immediately kill your tranny).

Inside the radiator ? Sound unlikely, the heat exchanger is usually just a length of steel pipe sitting in one of the headers. It describes it as if was in the transmission oil pan.

It mentions the entrance of the transmission cooler. This cooler is in the radiator. Only the 92's had the screen. The newer radiators do not have this screen.

Yes, there was a screen that plugged up in the radiator on the 92. :o

So a 1994 SVX only have one transmission filter as shown in picture?

Yours should have that filter. It's located at the bottom of the radiator on the left hand side.

And which filter is it? Transmission Oil Filter? Engine Oil Filter?

Transmission. It filters particles too small to be caught by the internal transmission screen filter.

My JDM 94 does not have this filter.

Pat from Levelten told me that they do not recommend installing an aftermarket filter. (Perhaps because Levelten are in the transmission repair business :D)

So you only have also in your SVX one transmission filter, the one of this picture:

Do you have changed it?
If aftermarket filter is not recommended, what filter could I buy and where?
Thank you all.

P.D.: the brand of the filter I found and I managed to buy is HASTINGS

How much would you be willing to pay for a Subaru 4EAT Recall ATF Filter Kit, including hoses and mounting hardware?

Keep in mind the Perma-Cool kit without the temperature gauge starts at $38.89.

Would you be willing to pay $15, $20, $25, $30???

How about just $9.53 plus $8.95 shipping from www.subaruparts.com?

The super secret part number is: 31099AA091 Just go to your local Subaru parts department, it might cost more than $9.53 but you won't have to pay for shipping.

I had found the part number for just the filter also but it was about $15 so I didn't keep track of it . . .

Do you think it is worthwhile to install an aftermarket transmission cooler and filter? If so, is there a particular one you would recommend? Would you install it in series/parallel/instead of the stock cooler?
It has been suggested to me to take the output pipe from the transmission, through a filter, then the aftermarket cooler (air/oil), then the stock cooler (water/oil), then back to the transmission.
Is this a sensible course of action?

The cooler must be rated at 24,000 gvw.I don't recommend a filter. The best way to run cooler is from stock cooler to the 24,000 gvw cooler to the rear coolerline on gearbox.

I assume the internal filter in the transmission of the '92 was changed both times the transmission was rebuilt. I haven't changed the internal filter in the '94. I know the fluid is circulating OK so presumably the filter is not clogged up.

Phil.

Thanks but subaruparts.com doesn't ship international and to see SVX online catalog you must be a US registered user. I knew the webpage but I think I can't buy parts from them :(
I will recall Subaru to ask them for the filter. I called last week a Kia dealer and Subaru authorised dealer and the guy said to me that there is no transmission filter for SVX:confused: I will try calling the big Subaru dealer of Madrid...
The part number you posted is of the filter and the gasket or only of the filter?
There are two internal transmission filters, wich is better? (see photos)
Regards.

The part number 31099AA091 is for the external filter kit that Subaru installed when they recalled cars with the 4EAT transmission. This link shows the mounted filter: http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/14367.

After you download the file you'll need to add .jpg onto the end of the filename.

The filter is mounted below the battery. The piece of metal at the bottom of the picture with the oblong hole in it is the front left side tie down point.

I hope this helps.

Sorry, I can't help you with the internal filter.

Dan

Ok thanks Dan, but my car doesn't have the external filter, it's a 1994 SVX and I think that only 1992-93 SVX have this filter (recalled by Subaru). The one I need is the internal but today my Subaru dealer has said to me that there are 2 different filters and that I have to bring the car to his garage for seeing which filter it is and to be changed by them...
Regards.

This thread shows the type of internal filter that is in the transmission, and how to replace it.
