Well this is the ultimate writeup to the ultimate N/A SVX. I was recently hired to do a 5 speed swap for the member on this board Shotgunslade. He was very interested when everyone was at my garage for Chike's cams that we kept in touch. Over the months, we have plotted exactly what he wanted to do and I made some other suggestions on top of what we needed. Since I am still in College I needed to finish this up before I go back on Tues Jan 17th. So below are all of the pictures I had taken over the course of the past week along with a parts list of what we used.

Parts:

04 WRX 5 speed transmission
99 Outback front driveshaft w/ SVX rear half
Modified WRX pedal assemblies
WRX Starter
Custom X-member
Custom Shift linkage

I also used Castrol Synthetic Brake Fluid for the clutch

This was quite a project to tackle in less than a weeks time but it is done and running very well. I hope you all enjoy the pics I will have comparative G-tech pro RR charts from before and after once the weather clears up a little

Do you know what the total cost is with parts and labor - out the door? That is a nice conversion. You do good work. ;)

Sweet deal tom. you should have convinced Shotgunslade to use your brothers special shift knob though, he'd have an extra 30 horsepower;) j/k, looks like you had alot of "fun" on this one.
Think you have time to do a few tranny swaps for me today?

j/k....kinda....

Anyhow, I look forward to seeing them numbers

I am sure he will be pleased as well. That is a very good price. I paid $4,000 to have may manual transmission rebuilt by SmallCar and they used my transmission and Chilak gears, but I don't want to get started on that subject again.

Following are my actual out of pocket and the source

2004 WRX 5MT Leesville Auto Recyclers $1500
WRX Starter Leesvile Auto Recyclers $65
WRX clutch slave cylinder eBay-auction $14
WRX Clutch pedal assmbly + master cylinder eBay-auction $100
SS clutch hydraulic line eBay-auction $24
WRX flywheel bolts Subaruparts.com $15
ACT Prostreet Flywheel, HD pressure plate and disc Prostreetonline.com $649
WRX shift linkage eBay-auction $53
gearshift boot eBay - shop $40
gearshift knob ebay-shop $49
Group N-motor mounts rallisport.com $92
Group-N transmission mount rallisport.com $65
Waldro fuel pump eBay-bestdealer $99
Adjustable fpr eBay evovector $45
Seals and gaskets kit subaruparts.com $250
Timing belt subaruparts.com $75

Plus Tom's fee, the cost of the radiator, the driveshaft, the crossmember and miscellaneous materials mentioned in Tom's post. Total comes out to about $6k, but 4EAT in good condition will sell for about $400.

Sourcing this thing has been a blast. The auction for the shift linkage went down to the wire. The pedal auction expired without a buyer, before I was in buying mode, so I contacted the seller, and bought it off-line. Much Internet comparison shopping. My wife didn't see me for a long time.

Had the phenolic spacers (old style) with separate gaskets lying around for a while, just hadn't installed them.

I have a Kartboy short shifter kit, but there are some issues with it, and it's not installed yet.

Can't wait to get my hands on it, but am leaving for Qatar in a couple of hours, so won't be able to pick it up until next weekend.

I guess Tom will do some G-Tech, (nice toy, Christmas gift from my wife), runs this week , to compare with the before runs he did last week. Expect to download those from the Rydges Hotel in Doha.

Many thanks, Tom. Very impressive work.

See you all at Reading

Dan, the CEL is still on. The rear clunking was the pass side rear spring not seating properly but I fixed it. It does have a sort of irratic idle that I will look into deeply later but it is not bad. It drives nicely but I think the fuel pressure could be backed off a little bit. I will know more tomorrow when the roads are cleared

The erratic idel may be related the the Ecutune Stage 2 v 4 problem where the idle setting was too rich, as I remember. Was corrected in Stage 2 v 5, which I have in there now, but, it may not be able to handle the higher fuel pressure. I would probably run stock pressure on the street anyway, and almost certainly to my emissions test. Would probably only raise the pressure setting when I go to the track.

Thats my thoughts exactly. I will crank it back down and leave it for ya. I am gonna take it on the highway for it's final test drive to assure everything is working properly.

Yes Chike, this is about as good as it gets;)

Midaswell beat tom to it.......
The car drives great on the highway, and she really throws you in the seat in 3rd gear. The car drives smooooooth, and that shift knob boot combo looks even better in person.I was suprised, and I think tom was too. Dan, you won't be disappointed.

A little aside, your exhaust sounds great and them brakes stop on a dime. just thought Id throw that in there....

Have fun racing that mean green machine! (on the track)

Couldn't have said it better myself, the car is working very well. The 5 speed stall is apparent but I feel the lightweight flywheel is to blame and I will discuss a good technique to keep it from stalling when you get here on Sat. In the mean time, enjoy your trip and don't work too hard. I am hoping that the roads are in good condition friday night to get that G-tech run in.

Dan just re-read this and I want to let you know that everything listed here is included in the labor cost minus the radiator. Fluids are all top of the line but what did you expect? you want it to last and perform. If I can find the extra time I will change the rear diff oil with some of the extra Royal purple I have left also. If not, I will give you the extra quart. Sorry I just ran out of time and energy:o

I've done everything I can think of to my 5MT to try to stop it from stalling, and my conclusion is also that its the 13 lb flywheel. One of these days I'm going to try Beav's suggestion to install a little dashpot to slow the last millimeter of so of throttle travel when the throttle is closing.

TomsSVX
01-16-2006, 03:51 PM
that would be a viable solution. I feel like the car is really choking itself out more than anything. It feels like since the RPMS are dropping so fast, there is excess fuel not being burned quickly enough and in essence choking it to death. But I find a little tap on the gas before breaking solves this quite easily. Something that once you get used to doing, it is hard to forget

Actually the ECU shuts off all fuel delivery when you take your foot off the gas pedal. Most (if not all) modern ECUs do this. My wideband meter shows this everytime I use it. I've been doing the foot thing to stop the stalling too.

Don't know if it is related or not, but when the throttle is dropped shut, the fuel that was lining the inlet tracts will boil off, under the vacuum that is created then. The engine runs rich, till it has all gone. This happens regardless of fuel cut off.

I think that Beav's dash pot is the best fix for it. I have had to do it for other carb. cars.

Harvey. ;)

I'd love to but I am looking to pick up a wagon for a daily. Suby of course for the AWD in bad weather. Then I can actually do some work worth while on the silver... got any leads? Thanks for the compliments. I would also like to hear about that dash pot if anyone is going to try it. If someone would suggest a part # or a donor vehicle I will see what I can do. I know my Silver only stalled on me once and it was in wet weather with the defrost on.

The wideband shows the afr going super lean (>25:1 afr) within a second of letting off the gas pedal, so the fuel must be evaporating off pretty quickly.

Summit Racing sells a dashpot for Holly Carburetors, Part #HLY-11-4. Blurb says: "These Holley carburetor dashpots are designed to be used on manual transmission vehicles. They will prevent engine stalling on sudden deceleration." They also supply several different brackets for different carburetors. Seems like the trick would be to fabricate a custom bracket that would position the dashpot correctly on the throttle body.

Hey thare tommaroo,

I practically have a small subaru car lot and I think I can let go of a '90 loyale with 110k. Needs windsheild, front left cv boot and or axel, and some valve cover gaskets(leaks oil). Oh and the exaust has a leak. Shes a runner and a beater and I can get her stuck with the best of them.

'90 loyale 110k
'90 legacy 105k
'94 svx 65k
'98 forester 158k (possible new acciquistion)
'97 ford ranger 156k
