Handful of questions:

Has anyone figured out if it's possible to correct the speedometer reading from a 4.44 swap by fitting a different sized tire (noticed mine reads about 5mph above the actual speed; speedo says 70, GPS says 65)?

What is a good sized tire for the Murano rims? And for the RX8? How is the ride with the short side walls?

Yes.
I believe that with the 4.44 swap the speedometer read about 5.5% higher than actual.
So a 5.5% taller should read as correctly as we are able with the stock SVX componants.

Okay, check my method here (color coded for clarity, mathematical not visual, sorry):
OE tire size: 225/50-16
16" = 406.4mm
(225 * .50) * 2 = 225 - height of upper AND lower sidewall
225 + 406.4 = 631.4 - height of sidewalls and rim for total diameter (mm)
631.4 + (631.4 * 0.055) = 666.127 - compensated total tire diameter

Picking from some standard sizes
205/50-17 = 636.8 mm diameter
215/45-17 = 625.3 mm diameter
225/45-17 = 634.3 mm diameter
225/40-18 = 637.2 mm diameter
225/45-18 = 659.7 mm diameter

So, to get close enough, I need a 17" rim with 215/45-17 tire, right?
EDIT: WRONG!
I goofed up on the math for the tire diameters, current numbers are correct. The 225/45-18 should take care of it well enough.

Using Larry IIIs tire calculator,http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/LarryIII/14768.xls
the 215/45/17 would be 6.1mm shorter than stock.
A 225/45/17 would be 2.9mm taller than stock, but would be just as wide as stock.

That's a really neat tool! Doing my math again it seems I need a tire with a diameter of 26.23". According to this, I need a 225/45-18 (25.97") to get close to making up the difference?

Normally I would NEVER recommend a aller tirefor our SVXi, but with 37% more torque in first gear the 4.44 tranny can take it in stride.
If your wheels are wide enough that tire will make a big differance in handling feel.

Is there a better way to compensate for the speedo?

Good question!I have always believed that you could not have too much tire on a car, IF the car was able to handle, or prepared for the bigger tires.

The weight of the wheels and tires is something to consider.
The stock wheels and tires weigh about 40 pounds each.
Heavier wheels and tires are harder to both accellerate and decellerate, making the car slower (to get going)and harder to stop.
Knowing that a 4.44 has MUCH better torque in all four gears this allows a little lattitude in tire sizing.
But back to your question.

I called Mike at ECUTune to ask him if He could make some 4.44 speedometer compensators.
This might be a great thing for those out there with 4.44s and want to keep the stock tire diameter.
On my SC Claret I went with bigger tires and wheels.
It has the torque, brakes and suspension to handle the big wheels and tires that are actually lighter than our stock ones.

Have they already been developed and he just has manufacture them or would this be a new product? I would be pleased as punch to be able to put on a smaller (read: standard) tire...

RX-8 18x 8 rims, offset 52mm, with 235/40-18 Falken's on stock suspension, 1992 LS-L. No rubbing of tires in rear with empty backseat, fronts not even close to touching, with fairly aggressive cornering on mountain roads.

No rub with the 245/40-18's....? STi offset? Always like the 5 spoke look.

To those with RX8 wheels: What lug nuts did you use on those? I'm going to have to buy a set, I'm sure, because my current set is a cobbled together mess.

I use either 21 mm x 1.25, 60 degree stock Mazda conical regular (wider) or 12 x 1.25 tuner, "Gorilla" style conical lug nuts. The stock SVX, as you know, have flat/washer faces on them.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/12x1-25-Tuner-Lug-Nuts-w-Key-G25-G35-G37-350Z-370Z-STI-WRX-Infiniti-Nissan-/231019932321?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c9dc6aa1&vxp=mtr#ht_3069wt_1012

The eBay set are cheaper than the stock Mazda lugs and will fit aftermarket rims if you ever switch.

Nope, I'm in the same boat as you... I'll probly be getting that resonator suggested on your thread and have a muffler shop install it.

I've had these for a while, used to be silver, but I got bored with them and not having the money for new/different wheels I rattle canned them matte black.:p They are Velox VX-SCYTHE 17x7.5 Offset +42. Don't pay attention to all the door dings.

I need to replace my tires because one developed a bubble. My wife wants the same Yokohama S Drive. I found 4 on CL but they're 205/40/18 not the 225/40/18 that I am using. Are the 205's too narrow for the weight of the SVX?

Crazy_pilot
09-12-2014, 11:37 AM
I ran 205's as my winter tires with no problem, but they were 55 profile. 40 profile will be very low and prone to a harsh ride and pothole damage.

I found an updated, edgy version of our OEM originals. available in 17" and 18" x 8"

114.3mm and 42mm offset. Still getting more info. about $1200.00 plus shipping. They are directional too.

Compared to the Enkei Shoguns, which seemed to have too narrow a spoke for our massive cars, like OEM's on Weight Watchers. Plus the multi-hole tuner-look seemed distracting

I'm running 2015 STi 18 inch stock wheels and tire size on my 91.

The car was previously on some RX-8 wheels.
